RVD 4G OBD Dongle Product Safety and Warranty Information Release: V1.0 This document contains information on how to operate your OBD device safely. By following these requirements and recommendations, you will avoid dangerous situations. You must read these instructions carefully and follow them strictly before operating the device! 1. Health and Safety Information General Guidelines ▪ Electrical equipment may be susceptible to electromagnetic interference. Position the device away from video displays, monitors, radios and other electronic equipment to avoid potential interference. ▪ Some medical devices may also be affected such as hearing aids and pacemakers. Consult a medical physician or the medical device manufacturer prior to using near the device. ▪ Do not use your device in hazardous environments where there are explosive gases or explosive products being processed. ▪ Do not attempt to disassemble the device. There are no interchangeable parts in the casing. ▪ Keep your device clear of debris, water, moisture and other environmental contaminants at any time. Do not submerge the device in any liquid. Failure to do so may result in units malfunctioning or short-circuiting, that can lead to a fire hazard and cause loss or serious injury. ▪ Do not cover the device with anything. This may lead to overheating of the device and cause fire. ▪ The device must be used in ventilated environment. ▪ Do not expose the device to direct sunlight or store it in hot areas. ▪ Do not allow children to play with the device. ▪ Use an antistatic cloth to clean the device. Do not use chemical or abrasive cleansers which might damage the casing. ▪ Use the device within the listed environmental ranges: o operation temperature range of -20°C ~ +70°C o storage temperature range of -40°C ~ +85°C o humidity range of 5% ~ 95% (non-condensing) o Ingress Protection Rating: IP40. ▪ If your device contains a SIM card slot do not remove the Nano SIM card unnecessarily. The Nano SIM card is susceptible to static electricity damage. ▪ Do not place the device alongside items affected by magnetic fields such as computer disks, credit cards, travel cards or other magnetic media. The information contained on the disks or cards may be affected by the device. ▪ Avoid mounting the device near other radio equipment (e.g. two-way radios), PA equipment and high energy electrical sources (e.g. cables). ▪ Do not place the device in any location or position where it interferes with any body movements related to driving activities. ▪ To prevent water damage, do not install below windows or doors. ▪ Do not drop, throw, or subject the device to other physical trauma. ▪ Stay eco-friendly. Recycle the packaging of your device after installation. ▪ If at any point after your device is installed an unexpected warning light illuminates on the vehicle dash or the vehicle stalls or has a marked drop in performance, shut off the engine, remove the device, and contact roadside assistance/vehicle service. Continuing to operate a vehicle with these symptoms can cause loss of vehicle control, and serious injury. ▪ Do not use any mobile devices while operating a vehicle. ▪ Before unmounting the device from the vehicle ignition must be off. ▪ To avoid mechanical damage, it is advised to transport the device in an impact-proof package. ▪ Do not install or handle the device during a thunderstorm / lightning storm. ▪ Avoid placing the device on moving components (e.g. doors, steering shafts, handles, fans, etc.). when using extension cables. ▪ Do not place the dongle in the area over the airbag or in the airbag deployment area when using extension cables. ▪ Mount the dongle with device label facing towards the passenger compartment of the vehicle when using extension cables. ▪ Continental is not responsible for any harm caused by wrong cables used for connection between the vehicle and the device. ▪ Operate the device in suitable conditions. Do not use the device where mobile connectivity is forbidden. ▪ Do not attempt charging the device directly from the electrical mains. ▪ Improper device use may result in a fire, explosion or other hazard. Internal Battery: ▪ Battery should not be disposed of with general household waste. Bring damaged or worn-out batteries to your local recycling center or dispose them to battery recycle bins found in stores. ▪ Input Voltage Range: 4,25 – 4,31 V DC with overvoltage protection ▪ Back-up Battery: 180 mAh Li-Ion Battery 3,7 V (0,67Wh) ▪ Average power consumption (when draining the internal battery): ≤ 7 μA Using uncertified manufacturer or different type batteries may cause an explosion or other hazard. Do not try to exchange the battery by yourself. In case of any issue related to the internal battery contact your Continental Sales Responsible. Check IEEE 1725 standard for more details about the internal battery. SIM & Connectivity: ▪ Continental owns the SIM in the device and the SIM may only be used for the device it is sold with. ▪ You must not use your device for any purpose we/you believe is abusive, illegal, fraudulent, a nuisance or for criminal activities. ▪ You must not use gateway devices or applications to send automated messages or make automated calls based on the connectivity offered by the device. ▪ Your SIM must only be used for its intended purpose and won’t work if inserted in traditional cellular devices such as smartphones, tablets, or mobile broadband devices. ▪ Your SIM will only work in the following countries: USA, Canada, Mexico. Outside of these countries the connectivity will be interrupted. ▪ You will receive a notification where excessive usage is detected in any given 30-day subscription period. We retain the right to suspend or terminate your plan where your data use exceeds your selected plan expectations as reasonably set by us. ▪ We’ll provide our services with reasonable skill and care. LED 2 – Blue Blinking The device is trying to establish the 4G LTE cellular connection. LED 2 – Blue Solid The device has established the 4G LTE cellular connection. LED 1 & LED 2 – Blinking alternately The device is being configured for your vehicle. LED 1 & LED 2 – Both solid The device was configured successfully and is ready to transfer data. Page 4: Read Before Starting The Remote Vehicle Data (RVD) OBD device can be used in any private or light commercial motor vehicle that has an OBDII interface. Pure electric vehicles (EV) are currently not compatible with this OBD device. However, Plug-In Hybrid vehicles are supported. On some vehicles mounting modifications could be required to secure the device i.e. removing of panels. For such cases two different harnesses are available and need to be purchased separately. 1.) Simple OBD extension to place your device away from the engine diagnostic port’s location 2.) Y-type harness to keep the diagnostic port exposed The Y-type harness requires completion by a Professional Installer to ensure a secure installation. An unsecure device installation can cause poor electric and/or data connection that can lead to short circuits and fires or cause malfunctions of vehicle controls that can result in serious personal injury or significant damage to your vehicle. Page 5: Get the RVD Connect Web App You will need the RVD Connect Web App to be able to onboard 4G OBD Dongle. Follow the link below to access the RVD Connect Web App supporting the configuration of your OBD device for your vehicle: [Fixed link will be provided here] Attention: Do not plug the device into your vehicle until the RVD Connect Web App instructs you to do so. Page 6: Get Your Account Log-in with your existing RVD Demo Portal account credentials (e-mail and password). If you don’t have username and password, please get in touch with your Continental RVD Sales contact. Your contact will provide you with the credentials. Page 7: Device-Vehicle Configuration After you signed in to your account press “Add Devices” and the RVD Connect Web App will guide you through the configuration process. The OBD device needs to connect to the mobile network in order to complete the configuration process. Please make sure you are not in an area with any coverage issues like an underground parking or closed garage. When RVD Connect asks you to scan the QR code on the device sticker you can also scan the QR code from the sticker included in the box. The sticker on the device and the sticker in the box are identical. When RVD Connect asks you to manually input the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and you cannot find it in any vehicle-related documentation please consider that the VIN is always located on your car. The make and model of your vehicle determine where to find the VIN, however, the most likely spot is on the dashboard near the windshield. Also, under the bonnet there can be a VIN stamped within the bodywork. Attention: Make sure your vehicle is OFF and stationary before installing your RVD 4G OBD Dongle. Attention: Ensure no dashboard warning lights are on in the vehicle while it is running, and all other functions such as headlamps and flashers etc. are working prior to installing the device. Attention: During the whole configuration process the vehicle must be stationary and may not be moved. Page 8: How to install your OBD Device - Find the OBDII Port The RVD 4G OBD device plugs into the OBDII port of your vehicle. In most cases you can find the OBD port of your vehicle in the driver’s legroom below knee level, under the driver side dashboard near the steering column or in the center console. If you cannot find the OBD port search the user manual of your vehicle for more details or call the Continental Support Desk (contact information is given below). - Plug your Device to the OBD Port Insert the OBD device into the OBDII port until the whole OBDII port of the vehicle is covered by the connector. Page 9: Start driving After both the RVD Connect Web App and the device itself (both LEDs solid) indicate that the configuration has been completed successfully you can start driving. The device and its sensors (accelerometer, gyroscope, GNSS) will calibrate themselves during the first 10 minutes of the drive. Afterwards the device is fully functional and starts collecting and sending data. The first vehicle data should be visible in the RVD Connect Web App after the first trip has been finished and the engine turned off. Attention: Do not use your phone or the RVD Connect Web App while driving. Page 10: Use the WiFi Hotspot Find your device network name (SSID) and password on the device sticker or on the sticker copy on the back of this leaflet. The WiFi Hotspot is automatically activated when ignition is turned on and deactivated x minutes after the ignition was turned off. The WiFi Hotspot only works with your own Nano SIM card. Therefore, please remove the Nano SIM card from the SIM card slot supplied together with the device and insert a SIM card providing sufficient data volume from one of the following Mobile Network Operators: USA: - AT&T - Verizon Wireless - T-Mobile - Sprint Canada: - Rogers - Bell - Telus Mexico: - TelCel - Movistar - AT&T Other Mobile Network Operators are not supported.
