It can either be used as a wireless bridge, placed on your robot, connected to the robot controller or as an indoor wireless access point connected to your robot driver station. By configuring the VH-109 radio as a wireless bridge, you'll be able to wirelessly connect your robot controller to the field side network connected to your robot driver station. When configured as a WIRELESS ACCESS POINT, due to regulatory requirements, the VH- 109 radio cannot be powered using a battery source and is for indoor use only. The device is regulated by the FCC LPI (Low Power Indoor) requirements when in this mode. At this time, the product is powered by AC power POE Only when the VH-109 radio is configured as an Indoor Clients may it be powered using a battery. Mounting your Radio The radio should be mounted against a metal tube or plate. Zip tie notches are included in the event that teams opt out of using VHB or another adhesive to attach the radio to their robots. It is recommended that teams mount against a metal tube/plate to act as a heatsink for the radio during extended operation. Wiring Your Radio Powering your Radio The VH-109 radio was designed to operate directly off battery voltage but is compatible with the sources of radio power for the OM5P radio. The radio can also be dual powered using both the 12V Weidmuller DC input or using Passive Power over Ethernet on the RIO port simultaneously however, the inputs need the SAME source and voltage. When configured as a wireless access point, due to regulatory requirements, the VH-109 radio cannot be powered using a battery source. The device is regulated by the FCC LPI (Low Power Indoor) requirements when in this mode. When configured as a wireless access point, the device must be powered using an AC to DC adapter that is sold separately. http://192.168.69.1:8081/ Programming your Radio Configuring your computer Programming your Radio Navigate to The configuring computer must have it's network interface configured with an IP address in the 192.168.69.0/24 subnet to reach the management IP of the VH-109 radio. For example, the network interface on your driver station laptop can be temporarily configured to: IP Address: 192.168.69.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: Leave Blank DNS: 192.168.69.1 or Leave Blank When at an official FIRST event, the Vivid-Hosting Radio Kiosk will be available for teams to easily program their radios with a GUI interface. Team Bridge Mode This is the default configuration for the VH-109 radio to act as a ROBOT RADIO for FRC competitions. โ€ข Select "Robot Radio Mode" โ€ข Enter the team number โ€ข Enter the 6 GHz WPA/SAE key โ€ข Enter the 2.4 GHz WPA/SAE key (See note below) Team Access Point Mode You can also configure your radio to act as a wireless access point, similar to what's used on a competition FIRST field with FMS. - Select "Access Point Mode" - Enter the team number - Enter the 6 GHz WPA/SAE key - Select a wireless channel When configured as a WIRELESS ACCESS POINT, due to regulatory requirements, the VH- 109 radio cannot be powered using a battery source and is for indoor use only. The device is regulated by the FCC LPI (Low Power Indoor) requirements when in this mode. Only when the VH-109 radio is configured as a indoor client device may it be powered using a battery. When DIP switch #3 is in the ON position AND a valid connection to an 6GHz 802.11ax Wi-Fi access point is not present, the radio will simultaneously broadcast as a 2.4GHz 802.11ax Wi- Fi access point with the SSID of "FRC-XXYY" where XXYY is the programmed team number. Once the radio successfully connects to a 6GHz 802.11ax Wi-Fi access point, the 2.4Ghz 802.11ax Wi-Fi access point will shut down until the device is power cycled. Programming your Radio (Advanced) REST API A RESTful API interface is included to place the radio in "Team Bridge" or "Team Access Point" mode. Here are some initial considerations when thinking about where to mount the radio on your robot: Consideration Reason The radio should be mounted against a metal tube or plate. Heat can build up inside the radio. By mounting the radio against a metal surface, you can conduct heat away. Do not block the visibility of the status LEDs. These LEDs are used by field staff to diagnose connectivity problems. Without these LEDs it becomes much harder to troubleshoot why your robot may be having connection issues. Avoid having objects within 12" of the radio (Not including the back of the radio, opposite the status LEDs). The antennas inside the radio have a radiation pattern. Having objects pass too close the radio can alter this radiation pattern, and adversely affect how well the radio is able to communicate with the field. It is recommended that teams mount against a metal tube/plate to act as a heatsink for the radio during extended operation. Mounting Examples Here are some examples of ways you can mount the radio to your robot. In each of these examples we'll discuss why it's good or bad. The radiation patterns shown in the renders below are meant to be representative of the affect different mounting locations have on radio performance. The noted FCC ID above is otherwise known as the VH-109 device. The VH-109 device was a device designed for exclusive use within a high school robotics competition called FIRST Robotics Competition. More information about the competition can be found at https://firstinspires.org. The robotics competition operates under the premise of a 3 versus 3 on field competition using student designed robotics chassis that are often around 24 inches by 24 inches by 48 inches, weighing in at approximately 145 lbs. These robots operate within a closed indoor โ€œfield โ€ environment where humans are controlling the robots from a safe distance, behind field structures that contain the robots. The wireless environment currently utilizes a 5 GHz WiFI access point on the โ€œfield โ€ side and a WiFi STA on the robot side. Weโ€™re intending to use the VH-109 devices at the FIRST Championship in April of 2024. Weโ€™ve performed 6ID testing for our field side configuration along with the 6XD testing for the robot side. As stated in our other letter, โ€œRE: Part 2, Subpart J, Radiofrequency Radiation Exposureโ€, we believe that this device cannot be used outside of our robotics application as there is hardware and software requirements to enable its use within the robotics field. There will be no usage of these devices outside of their intended application within the FIRST Robotics Competition. Weโ€™re intending to provide the VH-109 device to be used as a next generation wireless communications device for both the field access point and STA on the robot.
