This manual is not a substitute for an approved airframe-specic maintenance manual, installation design drawing, or complete installation data package. Attempting to install equipment by reference to this manual alone and without rst planning or designing an installation specic to your aircraft may compromise your safety and is not recommended. The content of this manual assumes use by competent and qualied avionics engineering personnel and/or avionics installation specialists using standard aviation maintenance practices in accordance with relevant accepted practices. This manual is not intended for use by individuals who do not possess the competencies and abilities set forth above. Refer to Section "Limitations", for additional information and other considerations. 1.2 Equipment Description ModelPartnumber Description AIR COM AC-1Aircraft radio system for remote installation AC-1 is a small, lightweight VHF transceiver module for the VHF airband (118.000 to 137.000 MHz) with 8.33 kHz and 25 kHz channel spacing. AC-1 does not feature any means for human maschine interaction. It always requires external control through a suitable control device, for example anAIR Avionics- AIR Control Display. General Description air avionics 1.3 System Capabilities AC-1 is receiving and transmitting audio messages in the VHF airband. It features several microphone and audio inputs as well as speaker and audio outputs. Furthermore, AC-1 holds intercom functionality. The unit is equipped with several interfaces to other avionics systems such as control devices installed in the aircraft. Discrete inputs are used to control functions such as Push To Talk (PTT) or intercom priority switching. 1.4 Technical Specications 1.4.1 Housing AC-1 has an all-metal housing with integrated grooves for heat dissipation. AC-1 is capable of sending and receiving transmissions in the aviation voice band, from 118.000 to 136.975 MHz with 25kHz or 8.33kHz steps. AC-1 has the ability to monitor standby COM frequencies and to record transmissions for replay. It features intercom functions and oers a broad range of installation options. Figure 1.1: AIR COM (AC-1) device. AC-1·Pilotâs Manual·rev. 1.0·2019/10/081 2 Pilot Controls 2.1 Pilot Controls AC-1 does not feature any frontend pilot controls. AC-1 is powered on and controlled through a suitable external control device, for example, anAIR Avionics- AIR Control Display. Additional external peripherals such as pushbuttons, microphones, and headphones or speakers are normally used. 2.2 Basic Transmitter Control The transmit function of the transmitter is controlled by a discrete input on the device. The input can, for example, be triggered using a ââPush-To-Talkââ button, the then so-called PTT-Pushbutton. 2.3 Volume, Channel-Selection, and Advanced Functions Channel selection, volume control, intercom, and transmission replay functions are con- trolled using an external control device. For details on basic COM operations such as channel selection or volume control, please consult the operation/pilotâs manual of the control device. The familiarization of specic installation conditions in an aircraft, e.g. number of connected devices and the system topology is recommended before using AC-1. 2AC-1·Pilotâs Manual·rev. 1.0·2019/10/08 Receiver and Transmitter Functions 3 3.1 Receiver Functions AC-1 receives transmissions in the aviation voice band. Up to two channels (ââSTANDBYââ and ââACTIVEââ channel) can be monitored simultaneously. The Audio volume of both channels can be set up individually. 3.2 Transmitter Functions 3.2.1 Sending Transmissions AC-1 sends transmissions on the selected ââACTIVE Channelââ. Push thePTT-Pushbuttonto start the transmission. To end the transmission, release the PTT-Pushbutton. 3.2.2 Stuck PTT Function AC-1 contains software that prevents channel blocking by a permanently pushed or stuck PTT-Pushbutton. When thePTT-Pushbuttonis exercised longer than 28 seconds, a warning message indicating an imminent shut-down of the transmitter is sent to external control devices and, therefore, annunciated to the ight crew. IfthePTT-Pushbuttonisexercisedlongerthan33seconds, thetransmitfunctionisdisabled until thePTT-Puhbuttonis released again. A message is transmitted to external control devices, where the ââStuck PTTââ status is annunciated to the ight crew. 3.2.3 Duty Cycle Limitations Due to technical reasons, as all aircraft radios, AC-1 is not capable of continuously transmitting at full output power. A high transmission duty cycle leads to higher internal device temperatures, mainly because during transmission, energy from the transmitter dissipates as heat. Although AC-1 features a sophisticated housing design with regards to thermal management, the unit may still overheat if transmitting extensively at higher ambient temperatures. In the case of an overheat condition, the transmitter output power is temporarily reduced. The output power may, for example, be reduced to 40% of its nominal value which reduces the achievable communication distance to two thirds. As soon as the temperature reverts back to a normal value, the transmitter ouput is restored to its full nominal power. AC-1·Pilotâs Manual·rev. 1.0·2019/10/083 4 Abnormal Operation Ifafailureofinternalcomponents(likethetransmitterorthereceiver)orexternalcomponents (like a speaker or a microphone) is detected, information about the failure and the sytem status is transmitted to the external control device. Not all failures can be detected. It is possible that unannunciated failures occur. Failures are possible, that result in a loss of communication. In such an event, the ight crew is required to perform standard procedures mitigating the involved risks. Appropriate training of such procedures is advised prior to using AC-1. 4AC-1·Pilotâs Manual·rev. 1.0·2019/10/08 Software Updates 5 AC-1 features eld updateable software. Updates are performed using suitable control devices. For details on the update process, please consult the operating/pilotâs manuals of these control devices, for example, the AIR Avionics AIR Control Display 57 (ACD-57). Dear all, on 02nd March 2016 the Bilateral Oversight Board has signed Decision No 0006 for the Bilateral agreement between the USA and EU. With the above decision the provisions of Technical Implementation Procedures (TIP) Rev. 5 with respect to reciprocal acceptance of ETSO/TSO authorization are now officially in force. In few words it means that European manufacturers who hold an ETSO authorization can deliver their articles to the U.S. without the need for a FAA approval (FAAâLODA) and U.S. based TSOA holders can deliver their articles to the EU without the need for an ETSO authorization.
