GymAware RS Quick Start Guide 1. Introduction to the GymAware RS The GymAware RS is a gold-standard linear position transducer (LPT) used for velocity-based training (VBT). It attaches to your barbell (or weight belt) via a spring tether and measures the speed and load of each lift. GymAware RS tracks concentric/eccentric mean and peak velocity (m/s) and power (W or W/kg), along with other metrics like acceleration and distance. This real-time feedback helps coaches and athletes monitor 1RM progress, daily readiness, fatigue, and power output. Over 20 years, elite teams and world champions have relied on GymAware for precise performance data 2. Unboxing & What’s Included When you open the GymAware RS kit, you should find the following items : - GymAware RS unit: The main device with built-in tether and magnetic feet. - USB charging cable: A mini-USB cable for charging the device. - Service kit: Includes tools and spare parts for maintenance. - Quick start guide: This manual to help you get started. - Magnetic and Velcro straps: To attach the device to the barbell. - Velocity training bookmark: A visual aid for targets/zones. Be sure to keep the original packing and contents in case of future service needs. 3. Charging and Powering On Turn on the unit: Press the yellow ON/OFF button on the GymAware RS once. You should hear a single beep followed by a pause and then a slow beeping. The connection LED will pulse, indicating the unit is on and ready to connect. Sleep vs Shutdown: To sleep (brief off): Hold the ON/OFF button ~2 seconds, then release when you hear a slow double beep. Pulling the tether or tapping the button will wake it. To shut down (for long storage): Hold the button ~4 seconds total until the beeps stop. You must tap the button to turn it on again afterward. Always use the included charger. Using other chargers can damage the unit. Take care plugging in the USB cable so you don’t bend the port. 4. Installing and Mounting the Device - Floor placement (default): Place the GymAware RS on a flat, stable base (e.g. a weight plate) so its magnetic feet hold firmly to the floor. Position it directly under the barbell’s vertical path and keep it away from the lifter’s feet. The tether should hang vertically in line with the barbell’s intended lift direction. This alignment ensures accurate measurements. Using the straps: Attach the magnetic Velcro strap around the barbell collar, and pull the tether to clip the carabiner into the strap’s D-ring. Do not tighten the strap too much – it only needs to hold the device’s clip. Optional mounting: If you wish to attach GymAware RS to a rack or ceiling, use the optional mounting bracket. Secure the unit with screws when using the bracket. Always ensure the unit is firmly fixed to avoid drops. Magnetic feet: The RS unit has strong magnets on its base. You can place it against a metal surface for vertical or sideways mounting after powering it on. If you flip the unit (e.g. mounted to the rack), always wake it upright first (pull the tether or press ON) before use. This keeps the internal orientation sensor correct. Follow these guidelines to avoid interference or damage: never exceed the tether’s limit (about 1m) or let it snap back; always guide it back gently. 5. Connecting to the GymAware App (iOS only) Power on GymAware RS: Make sure the unit is on (see section 3). The RS will emit a slow beep and its LED will pulse when ready. Connect in the app: In the app’s main screen, tap the small Bluetooth/device icon in the bottom-left corner. A list of nearby devices will appear. Select and Zero: Find your GymAware RS by its serial number, then tap the green “Connect & 0” button next to it. This will pair the device to the app and automatically zero (calibrate) it. The unit will beep twice and flash its LED white when zeroing is complete. You need only connect/ zero once each time you power on the unit. Now the GymAware RS is paired. You should see its battery level and tether orientation icon on the Screen. 6. Setting Up an Account and Creating Profiles GymAware Cloud account: When you first open the app, you’ll be prompted to log in or create an account. All GymAware users need a free account to register hardware and sync data to the Cloud. Sign up with your email to access online features (e.g. data backup, team management). Adding athletes: In the app’s Setup screen, tap the “+” icon to create an athlete profile. Enter at least a first name (photo and additional details are optional), then tap Create. Repeat for each athlete. The list of athletes will sync between the iPad and your Cloud account. You can edit or delete profiles later if needed. Tip: Keep your athlete list short by focusing on those who will train with GymAware. You can also bulkmanage athletes on the GymAware Cloud website if you have many members. 7. Recording Workouts & Key Features Starting a session: In the app, select an athlete and choose the exercise (or create a custom exercise). Position the bar and GymAware as described above. When ready, press Record (or set the app to Auto Record mode) to begin. GymAware RS has no start/stop button on the device – it will automatically detect bar movement and record each rep for you. Performing lifts: Pull the tether taut and attach it to the barbell as explained. Execute your lift with proper form. The device’s green LED will flash rapidly during each set as it records data. After you finish, the set will auto-stop once the bar is at rest. You can then proceed to your next set or exercise. Live data on screen: During the lift, the app displays real-time metrics: velocity (concentric/ eccentric, mean & peak in m/s) and power (mean & peak in W or W/kg) for each rep. You’ll also see rep count, bar path, duration, and other values on-screen. After each set, you can review the data, save it, or move on.
