TESTRESULTS Reflection,radiationpatternmandvariationofoutputpoweracrossawidefrequencyband weremeasuredtoverifytheperformanceofthePCBantenna.Measurementsofthedonglein freespaceandwhenconnectedtoalaptopwereperformedtoverifythattheantennais suitablebothforUSBdonaledesignsandinastandaloneapplication.Freespaceisinthis documentinterpretedasameasurementperformedwithoutconnectingthedongletoa computer.Insuchameasurementthedongleisonlypoweredbyabattery. 5.1Reflection Allthereflectionmeasurementswereperformedwithanetworkanalyzerconnected toasemi-rigidcoaxcable,whichwassolderedtothefeedpointoftheantenna.Becauseof thesmallsizeantennaandthesmallgroundplanethiskindofmeasurementsisheavily affectedbythepresenceandplacementofthecoaxcable,thisinfluencecanresultina smaluncertaintyinresonancefrequencyandmeasuredreflection,Typicallydifferent placementofthesemi-rigidcoaxcablecouldchangetheresonancefrequencywith5-10MHz andtheeffectingwith3-4dB. HzISMband,whenconnectedtoa50ohmsource,wasadesigngoal.Reflectionoflessthan-10dB,or VSWRlessthan2,ensuresthatmorethan90%oftheavailablepowerisdeliveredtothe antenna.Bandwidthisinthisdocumentdefinedasthefrequencybandwheremorethan90%of theavailablepowerisdeliveredtotheantenna.Anotherdesigngoalwastofitthesizeofthe PCBAntennaonaUSBdongleandtoobtaingoodperformancealsowhenthedongleisconnectedtoa computer. 4.2Simulation IE3DfromZeland,whichisanelectromagneticsimulationtool,wasusedtodesigntheantenna.The accuracyofthesimulationiscontrolledbythemesh.Anincreaseofthemeshincreasesthesimulation time.Thus,forinitialsimulationsmesh=1shouldbeused.Whenafairlygoodresultisachieveda highermeshshouldbeusedtoobtainmoreaccurateresults.Comparisonofsimulationand measurementresultsshowsthatthemeasuredreflectionisbetweentheresultobtainedwithmesh= 5andmesh=1;seeFigure2fordetails.
