Always follow these instructions to help guard against personal injury and damage to your system. i Setting Up your System β€’ Read and follow all instructions marked on the product and in the documentation before you operateyour system. Retain all safety and operating instructions for future use. β€’ Do not use this product nearwater or a heat sourcesuch as a radiator. β€’ Set up the system on a stable work surface. β€’ The product should be operated only with the type of power source indicated on the rating label. β€’ Ensure that the electrical outlet you are using to power your equipment is easily accessible in case of fire or short circuit. β€’ If your computer has a voltage selector switch, make sure that the switch is in the proper position for your area. β€’ Openings in the computer case are provided for ventilation. Do not block or cover these openings. Make sure you provide adequate space, at least 6 inches (15 cm), around the system for ventilation when you set up your work area. Never insert objects of any kind into the computer ventilation openings. β€’ Ensure that the fan vents on the bottom of the casing are clear at all times. Do not place the computer on a soft surface, doing so will block the bottom vents. β€’ The computer product is equipped with a three-wire power cord to make sure that the product is properly grounded when in use. The plug on this cord will fit only into a grounding-type outlet. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug into an outlet, contact an electrician to install the appropriate outlet. Important Safety Information iii β€’ If you use an extension cord with this system, make sure that the total ampere rating on the productsplugged into the extension cord does not exceed the extension cord ampere rating. Care During Use β€’ Do not walk on the power cord or allow anything to rest on it. β€’ Do not spill anything on the system. The best way to avoid spills is to not eat or drink near your system. β€’ Some products have a replaceable CMOS battery on the system board. There is a danger of explosion if the CMOS battery is replaced incorrectly. Replace the battery with the same or equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer. Dispose of batteries according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If the CMOS battery requires replacement insure that a qualified technician performs the task β€’ When the computer is turned off, a small amount of electrical current still flows through the computer. To avoid electrical shock, always unplug all power cables, remove the battery and modem cables from the wall outlets before cleaning the system. β€’ Unplug the system from the wall outlet and refer servicing to qualified personnel if: – The power cord or plug is damaged. – Liquid has been spilled into the system. – The system does not operate properly when the operating instructions are followed. – The system was dropped or the casing is damaged. – The system performance changes. Replacement Parts and Accessories Use only replacement parts and accessories recommended by manufacturer. To reduce the risk of fire, use only No. 26 AWG or larger telecommunications line cord. Do not use this product in areas classified as hazardous. Such areas include patient care areas of medical and dental facilities, oxygen rich environments, or industrial areas. iv Users Manual Battery Disposal Do not put rechargeable batteries or products powered by non-removable rechargeable batteries in the garbage. Contact the Samsung Helpline for information on how to dispose of batteries that you cannot use or recharge any longer. Follow all local regulations when disposing of old batteries. American Telecommunications Certification Body Inc. 6731 Whittier Ave, McLean, VA 22101 October 23, 2001 RE: Samsung Electronics FCC ID: A3LS950WL Please review my comments on this Application. 1.) Application is for a wireless LAN card located inside a notebook computer. It is unclear if the Application for Certification covers only the LAN card, or LAN card plus computer. Please enlighten. 2.) Block Diagram is for the entire computer, but excludes the LAN card. Block Diagram also does not meet the requirements of 2.1033(b)(5) 3.) Operational Description is not nearly detailed enough, and does not meet requirements of 2.1033(b)(4). Please provide a description of how device operates. 4.) Schematics supplied are for the laptop only. There are no schematics supplied for the radio board. 5.) Schematics indicate there are provisions for a Bluetooth transmitter. Please indicate how the two radios will interact and still meet the RF Exposure requirements. 6.) Test Setup does not show a complete system was tested in accordance with ANSI C63.4 requirements. Explain. 7.) Wrong language in RF Exposure Exhibit. Only 20cm distance is permitted for devices within the Mobile classification for RF Exposure. 8.) There is no language in the Manual for limiting RF Exposure. William H. 360 Herndon Parkway Suite 1400 Herndon, VA 20170 http://www.rheintech.com Certification Report Samsung Electronics Page 28 of 42 Document Number: 2001224 / QRTL01-218 FCC ID: A3LS950WT 9 FCC PART 1 & 2 Β§1.1307; 1.1310; 2.1091; 2.1093 RF EXPOSURE CALCULATIONS FOR HIGH GAIN ANTENNAS From FCC 1.1310 table 1A, the maximum permissible RF exposure for an uncontrolled environment is 1mW/cm 2. The Electric field generated for a 1mW/cm 2 exposure (S) is calculated as follows: S = E 2 /Z where: S = Power density E = Electric field Z = Impedance. E = √S x Z 1mW/cm 2 = 10 W/m 2 The impedance of free space is 337 ohms, where E and H fields are perpendicular. Thus: E = √10 x 377 = 61.4 V/m which is equivalent to 1mW/cm 2 Using the relationship between Electric field E, Power in watts P, and distance in meters d, the corresponding Antenna numeric gain G and the transmitter output power and solving for d, d = √ P eak x 30 x G E Example using the Stub Omni-directional antenna 1. The Numeric gain G of antenna with a gain specified in dB is determined by: G = Log –1 (dB gain/10) G = Log –1 0.215 = 1.64 Notice in Installation Manual: While installing and operating this transmitter and antenna combination the radio frequency exposure limit of 1mW/cm 2 may be exceeded at distances close to the antennas installed. Therefore, the user must maintain a minimum distance of 20 cm from the antenna at all time. The table below identifies the distances where the 1mW/cm 2 exposure limits may be exceeded during continuous transmission using the external antenna TABLE 9-1: RF EXPOSURE SEPARATION DISTANCE Antenna Type Gain (dBi) Gain Numeric Power Output (mW) Calculated RF Exposure Separation Distance (cm) Minimum RF Exposure Separation Distance (cm) Dipole 0.5 1.1 31.0 1.6 20 Microstrip -1.8 0.6 31.0 1.2 20
