Johnson, Please find the following replies to your comments dated May 4, 2002; 1) The antenna to be connected to center connector of antenna circuit board is the main antenna and there are functions of Transmission and Reception. The antenna to be connected to side connector of antenna circuit board is exclusive use for Reception. At the test of Transmission mode, the antenna was used the one to be connected the center connector. The antenna was used the one to be connected the side connector at the test or Reception property. 2) Please find the re-submitted photos of internal in the filing. 3) Please find the uploaded description of antenna. 4) This product is installed the exclusive antenna with particular connector and sold. The antenna other than this exclusive one is never sold, except for Class II Permissive Change or getting a new FCC ID. 5) Please find submitted the confidential request letter in the filing. 6) Please find the corrected MPE statement of the manual in the filing. 7) Please find the corrected MPE statement of RF Exposure statement in the filing. 8) Please find corrected Form 731 in the filing. American Telecommunications Certification Body Inc. 6731 Whittier Ave, McLean, VA 22101 May 4, 2002 RE: Sony Corporation FCC ID: AK8PCWAC150S After a review of the submitted information, I have a few comments on the above referenced Application. 1) The EUT supports diversity. Is the diversity used for receive only, or does is also function for the transmit path? If it does function for the transmit path, was a specific test methodology or engineering judgement made for purposes of determining which antenna path was selected for testing. 2) The 2 internal photographs provided are too dark and the resolution is lower than desired. Please provide new internal photos. 3) Please provide more detail regarding the antenna (type, connectors, etc.). 4) The EUT makes use of an external antenna connector and antenna (see photographs). The only antenna that will be approved with this product is the one documented in the filing. For any antennas that have not been approved the Grantee will have to file a Class II permissive change to approve with the new antenna. However due to MPE issues and concerns, depending on the antenna, it may require a separate ID number. Currently, the device with any other antennas other than the one mentioned in the filing will be considered unauthorized equipment. The Grant will be conditional on acceptance of these terms. Please comment. 5) Their was a few files uploaded as confidential, but a letter requesting confidentiality (which specified which items) was not submitted. Please comment. 6) Please make the recommended changes to the MPE exhibit as discussed in my email. 7) The antenna gain listed on page 5 of 14 of the test report states the antenna gain is -3.6 dBi gain. The MPE exhibit state +1.0 dBi. Which is correct. This information must be consistent throughout all documentation provided. Please correct the affect exhibits, being sure to recalculate the MPE if this is affected. 8) The highest output power (conducted) measured was 14.9 dBm (31 mW). Please correct the 731 form (this should list the maximum conducted power). Timothy R. Johnson Examining Engineer mailto: [email protected] The items indicated above must be submitted before processing can continue on the above referenced application. DESCRIPTION This PC Card product provides a compatible wireless connection for portable and mobile computers in accordance with IEEE standard 802.11 DSSS. It can work at 11, 5.5, 2 or 1 Mbps. The operation is in accordance with IEEE 802.11. The product, one piece of hardware, contains the following blocks: - PCMCIA interface - Wireless Medium Access Control (WMAC); this chip is used for handshaking with the PCMCIA bus and for handling the IEEE protocol; it also does frequency management and interfaces to FlashROM for parameters on frequencies and Call codes. Here also selection for 11, 5.5, 2 or 1 Mbps is handled. - Digital signal processor takes care of all modulation/demodulation for DSSS for all above rates and can do selection out of 2 receiving antennae - Antenna function, provides connection to optional external antenna. It provides two antenna elements, one for transmitting while one of the two can be selected for reception. Optionally it can be equipped with: - a factory installable data encryption feature (WEP). This card may be used in portable or mobile devices such as laptops or handheld PDA’s. The device should not operate in a body worn device or configuration. RF Exposure Calculations: The following information provides the minimum separation distance for the highest gain antenna provided with the “PCWA-C150S” as calculated from FCC OET 65 Appendix B, Table (B) Limits for General Population / Uncontrolled Exposure. This calculation is based on the highest EIRP possible from the system, considering maximum power and antenna gain, and considering a 1.0m W/cm^2 uncontrolled exposure limit. The Fires formula used was: S = (P * G) / (4* * r^2) or r = (P * G) / (4 * * S) Where S = 1.0 mW/cm^2 for 2400 MHz P = 30.9mW (Maximum Conducted Power) G = 0.44(Isotropic antenna gain : Converted absolute value) r = Minimum safe distance from antenna (cm) For: PCWA-C150S r = 1.04cm
