BDS 280 / BDS 580 Blu‐ray Disc System Quick‐Start Guide Thank you for choosing a Harman Kardon product! This quick‐start guide contains all the information you need to connect and set up your new BDS Blu‐ray Disc system. To conserve our national resources, your BDS system does not include a printed owner’s manual. An owner’s manual containing complete information about operating all of your new system’s features is available on our website. Go to www.harmankardon.com and download the BDS Blu‐ray Disc System Owner’s Manual. Connections Connect the Speakers CAUTION: Before making any connections to the BDS system, ensure that the system’s AC cord is unplugged from the system and the AC outlet. Making speaker connections with the system plugged in and turned on could damage your speakers. Your BDS system has color coded speaker terminals: BDS 280 white left channel (+) red right channel (+) black (‐) on both channels BDS 580 white front left (+) red front right (+) blue surround left (+) gray surround right (+) BDS green center (+) black (‐) on both channels Most speakers use red to denote the (+) terminal and black for the (‐) terminal. Be sure to connect each speaker identically: (+) on the speaker to (+) on BDS and (‐) on the speaker to (‐) on BDS. Miswiring one or more speakers results in thin sound, weak bass, and a poor stereo image. Connect the subwoofer Connect the FM radio antenna BDS Connect a TV or video display NOTE: If your TV supports HDMI Audio Return Channel (ARC) and you access digital channels from your TV’s built‐in tuner or you have other sources already connected directly to your TV, you can feed their sound to the BDS system via the HDMI Monitor Out connector’s Audio Return Channel, and they will not require additional connections to the system. Connect to your wired home network Note: if you have a wireless home network, skip this step for now. You will use the BDS settings menus to connect to it once you’ve completed wired connections. BDS Connecting an HDMI source device BDS Connecting a component video source device [Insert new diagram showing to connect component sources to the TV and then use ARC] Connecting an optical digital audio source device Connecting a coaxial digital audio source device BDS Connecting an analog audio source device Connecting to AC power BDS System Rear Panel BDS Setting up the BDS Install the batteries in the remote control Turn on the system Set the system’s main power switch to the “ON” position. BDS System Rear Panel To set up your BDS system, you will use the remote control to navigate through the on‐screen menus and to make selections from them. BDS • Use the cursor up/down buttons to navigate through the menu list. When an item is highlighted, a white border will appear around it. • To select a highlighted item, press the OK button. The screen will change depending on your selection. • To return to the previous screen, press the Back button. BDS Initial Setup When you turn your BDS system on for the first time, the on‐screen menu will display the Initial Setup screens. The first screen allows you to set the language you want BDS menus to use. Highlight your choice and press the OK button, then the Initial Setup introduction screen will appear. Press the OK button, and the Initial Setup TV resolution screen will appear. Highlight your choice and press the OK button. Next, the Initial Setup aspect‐ratio screen will appear. 16:9 Full is the best choice for most displays. Highlight your choice and press the OK button. Next, the Initial Setup speaker package screen will appear. BDS This setting enables processing in the BDS system that will maximize your system’s audio performance. If you are using a Harman Kardon speaker package with your BDS system, select it’s model number from the list. If you’re not using a Harman Kardon speaker package, select “Other.” Configuring BDS for your speaker system Before you use your BDS, you need to configure it to work with your particular speaker system. Harman Kardon’s EzSet/EQ system uses the supplied EzSet/EQ microphone to perform this important step automatically. Before beginning, be sure you have correctly connected your speakers to the BDS system. IMPORTANT: Press the remote control “Disc” button before performing the EzSet/EQ procedure. EUT RF Exposure The EUT has three RF modules. One is a BT module. One is a 2.4G wifi module (airplay). One is a 2.4G/5.8G wifi module. There three modules can work together. BT module: The Max Conducted Peak Output Power is 6.85dBm (48.4mW) in 2402 of GFSK; The antenna gain of this antenna is 2dBi. 2.4G wifi module(airplay): The Max Conducted Peak Output Power is 21.89dBm (154.5mW) in channel 11 of 802.11g; The antenna gain of this antenna 1 is 3dBi 2.4G/5.8G wifi module: The Max Conducted Peak Output Power is 21.02dBm (126.5mW) in channel 1 of 802.11g; The antenna gain of this antenna is 3dBi 2dB logarithmic terms convert to numeric result is nearly 1.58. 3dB logarithmic terms convert to numeric result is nearly 2. According to the formula S=  2 4R PG ,we can calculate S which is MPE. Now , R=20 cm, P1=48.4mW, G1=1.58 ; P2=154.5mW, G2=2; P3=126.5mW, G3=2 So,S=  2 4R PG = 4.13*400*4 58.1*4.48 + 4.13*400*4 2*5.154 + 4.13*400*4 2*5.126 =0.127 mW/cm 2 So the MPE comply the requirement.
