This symbol indicates that there are important operating and maintenance instructions in the literature accompanying this unit. 2 English – INTRODUCTION Shure PA-Series UHF Antenna Combiners are designed to allow up to four PSM wireless transmitters to use a single antenna. The unit combines four PSM wireless transmitters to a single antenna, reducing stage clutter and improving intermodulation distortion performance. Features SUHF operation. SUp to four wireless transmitters can be combined into one transmitting antenna. SLow noise and intermodulation distortion. The PA Antenna Combiner maintains clean signals with minimal distortion. SMicrostrip technology for signal combining and filtering. SFour push/pull amplifiers for improved linear performance. SFront-mounted antenna. The PA Antenna Combiner comes with hardware to front-mount the antenna, which allows for better radio transmission. SDual rackmount hardware. The PA Antenna Combiner comes with hardware so that it can be rackmounted with another PA Antenna Combiner or PSM Transmitter into a single rack space. OVERVIEW Front Panel Ê ÊPower Switch and LED. For connecting the unit to up to four wireless transmitters. 3 English – INSTALLATION Connection 1.Using the cables supplied with each PSM Transmitter, connect the ANTENNA OUT of each PSM Transmitter to the INPUTS of the PA Antenna Combiner. 2.Attach the antenna (one supplied with each PSM Transmitter), or an optional directional antenna such as the Shure Model PA705, to the ANTENNA OUT connector of the PA Antenna Combiner. 3.Run the supplied power cable from the power connector to a power supply. The maximum input power to the combiner is +20 dBm (100 mW) per input, or +26 dBm (400 mW) total for all inputs. This is a conservative figure; the design will handle at least 20% more than these amounts. However, the combiner is intended only to be used with Shure LPAS model P7T transmitters, which can deliver a maximum of +20 dBm (100 mW) of power. The plots that you received were tested with Shure P7T transmitters as signal sources, operating at +20 dBm output. 2. The intermodulation data was gathered using four Shure P7T transmitters as drivers, each connected to one of the combiner inputs. The transmitters were all operating at their normal output power of +20 dBm (100 mW). This was done to replicate an "actual use" setup. Since the P7T transmitters have no user adjustment for the output power, the power level remained the same for all tests. The unit takes in four inputs from the transmitters and outputs them to a single antenna, eliminating stage clutter and improving intermodulation distortion performance. The unit is designed to meet the needs of users with multiple systems, and will generally be rack-mounted. I Special Features The Antenna Combiner features a microstrip Wilkinson power combiner, and four push-pull amplifiers for very linear performance. The unit has DC protection on all ports. The Combiner can be used from 100VAC to 240VAC. II Circuit Description RF Section Each input signal is first amplified by a temperature-compensated push- pull amplifier. The signals are then combined, using a microstrip 4 way Wilkinson combiner. They then pass through a low-pass filter to attenuate the harmonics above 1GHz, and are sent to the antenna port. The combiner stages are passive, and do not require electrical power. The power supply has a 5V supply line as well that requires a minimum current draw of 400mA. There are six power resistors on the board that draw this minimum load. Spectrum Analyzer HP8590L with tracking generator IV Alignment Procedure The Antenna Combiner requires no tuning or calibration. V Test for Product Acceptance The power supply uses any AC voltage between 100V and 240V, and when operating properly should produce 12VDC ± 0.6VDC at TP+12VDC(TPT I2 on schematic), 5VDC ± 0.2VDC at TP+5VDC(TPT I172), and 10 VDC ± .5VDC at all TP+10VDC. To power the unit off DC, remove the 6-pin power cable connecting the power supply to the board. Apply 12VDC to I16(or TP+12VDC if switch SW2 is set to “ on” ),5VDC to TPT I172, and attach the ground at I3(any PC board ground). The above voltage readings should still hold. The current drains are given in the chart below. The powered-up PA770 can be tested by applying a +10dBm RF signal at BNC inputs 1-4, and measuring the RF strength at the antenna output. Input signals in the passband, 720-750 MHz, should give outputs of 10dBm, +2dBm, -4dBm. The tests were performed according to the procedures of FCC as stated in Part 2 Subpart J, Equipment Authorization Procedures of the Code of Federal Regulations 47, by personnel of D.L.S. Electronic Systems, Inc. who are responsible to Donald L. Sweeney, Senior EMC Engineer. 3.0OBJECT The purpose of this series of tests was to determine if the test sample could meet the radio frequency emission requirements of the FCC "Rules and Regulations", Part 74, Subpart H, Sections 74.801 to 74.882 for Low Power Auxiliary Stations operating in the 722 MHz to 746 MHz Frequency Band. 4.0TEST SET-UP All radiated emission tests were performed at D.L.S. Electronic Systems, Inc. The radiated tests were made with the test item placed on a wooden turntable located in the Test Room with the receive antenna placed one meter from the device under test. EMC Test ServicesReport No. 7253 1250 Peterson Drive, Wheeling, Illinois 60090, USA06/28/01 Page 8 5.0TEST EQUIPMENT (Bandwidths and Detector Function) All data was automatically plotted using peak detector function. This information was then used to determine the frequencies of maximum emissions. Manual measurements were performed on these frequencies using a peak detector function of the Analyzer with the bandwidths specified by the FCC. From 200 MHz to 1000 MHz a bandwidth of 100 kHz was used (except for Occupied Bandwidth), and above 1000 MHz, wide enough bandwidths were used, depending upon the test being made, to ensure proper measurement of the narrowband signal. A list of the equipment used can be found in Table 1. All equipment was calibrated per the instruction manuals supplied by the manufacturer. 6.0RF POWER OUTPUT - PART 2.985 As stated in PART 74.861 (e-1), the output power should not exceed 250 milliwatts (24 dBm). The Antenna Combiner was tuned according to the tune-up procedures specified in Part 2.983 (d-5), and adjusted for its maximum output power. The RF output power was measured in the open field, using the following test method: The radiated signal from the EUT was measured. The EUT was then substituted with a signal generator and a tuned dipole antenna. The output of the signal generator was increased until the level received by the tuned dipole equaled that of the previous measured from the EUT. June 17, 1999 Mr. George Tannahill FCC Application Processing Branch Re: FCC ID DD4PA770 Correspondence Reference Number: 8278 731 Confirmation Number: EA93903 Date of Original E-mail: 06/16/1999 Dear Mr. Tannahill, With respect to the questions you raised in your E-mail message of the above date: 1. The device for which approval is being sought is a transmitter combiner. It has four inputs and one output. Therefore, the device is capable of outputting a signal which is the combination of up to four signals. Normally, it would be expected that these signals would be on different frequencies. Intermodulation test data is being provided to you in conjunction with this letter. 2. The input and output bandwidth plots are virtually identical, since the combiner does not change the emission signature. The plots submitted are being annotated to attempt to show more clearly which plot applies to the input and which applies to the output. However, since the plots are so nearly identical, this may be difficult to distinguish. 3. The emission designator given was for a type of Part 74 Low Power Auxiliary Station transmitter, FCC ID DD4P7T, that is intended to be used with the combiner. That transmitter's Emission Designator, shown on its grant, is 196KF8E. This designator is appropriate for that device, since the transmitter uses the standard Zenith-GE time division multiplex method of stereophonic audio transmission. As you pointed out in your message, it would probably be appropriate to state "combiner" on the grant for device DD4PA770, rather than a specific emission designator. This was done on a previous device of the identical type, FCC ID DD4PA760, which operates in a different frequency range of 620-670 MHz. 4. Since the device is a combiner, the power output would normally be dependent upon the exact power of the input signal(s). The transmitters that the device is intended to be used with have a maximum power output of 0.1 Watts. The power output specification that you referred to is for an internal test procedure. The product gain specification is 0 dB, +2dB and -4 dB. This means that a single test signal of +10dBm at any of the inputs should produce an output falling within the range of +12 dBm and +6 dBm. This variation normally causes no operational difficulty for the user. As a reminder, this device is for use as a Low Power Auxiliary Station, and is not intended to be used for broadcasting directly to the public. We recommend that the grant show a power output of 0.1 Watts, perhaps with a notation that this is with a single input driven. Again, this device is essentially identical to FCC ID DD4PA760, which has a power output of 0.1 Watts specified on the grant. The test laboratory also measured the spurious radiation which the device produces with no input signals, at 17.5 dB microvolts. This low radiation level is essentially due to the switching power supply, since the PA770 combiner has no internal signal source or clock signal. 5. Since the device is a combiner, which is a type of amplifier, no necessary bandwidth needs to be listed on the grant. Please see item #3, above.
