05-6301A01, Rev. 01MDS Mercury Series Quick Start1 MDS Mercury Series Setup Guide MDS Mercury TM Series transceivers provide an easy-to-install wireless network service with long range and secure operation at adaptive data rates approaching 30 Mbps. The transceiver is designed for demanding applications in industrial environments, where reliability and range are paramount. The transceiver comes in two primary models—Base Station (BS) and Subscriber Unit (SU), each with unique hardware profiles. Both models support Ethernet and serial services. A BS is a wire- less switch that usually provides connectivity into a wired Ethernet LAN/WAN. Subscriber Units associate over the air with a BS and are typically connected to an Ethernet or Serial device via a local cable. The outward appearance of the standard SU is very similar to the BS. NOTE:To determine whether a unit is an BS or Subscriber Unit, check the dome label on the top of the unit. Refer to the Mercury Series Technical Manual (05-6302A01) for advanced procedures and additional information. 1.1Connectors & Indicators Figure 1 shows the connectors and indicators of a Standard BS. These items are referenced in the installation and operation steps that follow. Note that SU radios may have an additional connector present for Wi-Fi service, depending on order requirements. If Wi-Fi is not provided on an SU, the GPS connector will also be absent. Invisible place holder Figure 1. Connectors and Indicators (Standard BS shown; SU Similar) 1.2Weatherproof Subscriber Unit In addition to the Standard Subscriber Unit, a weatherproof Out- door Unit (ODU) model is offered (see Figure 2). The ODU is designed for mounting on a tower, pole, or other elevated struc- ture, and includes an integral panel antenna. DC power is typically applied to the ODU through a Category 5 Ethernet cable (Cat. 5E, Cat. 6 also acceptable) which provides Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) service. The cable can be up to 100 meters in length (328 feet). For non-PoE models, a separate DC power cable is required to supply 10-65 Vdc. Invisible place holder Figure 2. Mercury ODU Subscriber Unit All operating parameters and commands for the ODU are identical to those of the indoor SU. The only difference is in the physical installation of the hardware on its support structure. There are three main requirements for installing all units in the transceiver system—adequate and stable primary power, a good antenna system, and the correct interface between the transceiver and the data device. Figure 3 shows a typical Mercury installation. 2.1Installation Steps Listed below are the basic steps for installation. It is highly recom- mended that the BS be installed first so that you can quickly check the operation of each associated SU as it is placed on the air. Invisible place holder Figure 3. Figure 4 shows the mounting dimensions of the unit. Mount the radio to a stable sur- face. (Fasteners not supplied.) Invisible place holder Figure 4. Transceiver Mounting Dimensions (Dimensions for BS and SU identical) 2.1.2 Step 1b—Mount the ODU (if applicable) The ODU is a one-piece unit with an integrated, dual polararized panel antenna. It measures approximately 27 cm wide X 27 cm deep X 8 cm high. Using the bracket on the back of the unit, mount the ODU securely to a tower, pole or other stable surface that provides a clear path in the direction of the associated Base Station. 2.1.3 Step 2—Install the Antenna (Non-ODU models) BS units typically use sector antennas, while SU’s typically use a directional panel antenna. All antennas should be mounted in the clear to a sturdy support. Connect the antenna’s feedline cable to the transceiver’s WiMAX Antenna Port. To minimize RF interfer- ence, the antenna should be at least 9 inches (> 23 cm) away from connected device(s), sensors and other external components. Install GPS Antenna (if required) Install the GPS antenna in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Connect it to the GPS Port on the unit’s front panel. 2.1.4 Step 3—Measure & Connect DC Power The DC input to the transceiver must be within 10–60 Vdc and capable of continuously providing at least 50 watts. ODUs, except for non-PoE units, receive power over the Ethernet cable. Power cabling for ODUs must be properly secured to the support structure the unit is mounted on. In addition, the ODU’s ground post must be connected to a low impedance Earth ground. For other models, a power connector with screw-terminals is pro- vided with each unit. Strip the wire leads to 6 mm (1/4 inch). Be sure to observe proper polarity with the positive lead (+) on the left, and the negative on the right. The unit is designed for use in neg- ative ground systems only. The power supply should be equipped with overload protection (NEC Class 2), to protect against a short circuit between its output ter- minals and the radio’s power connector. NOTE:It takes about 30 seconds for the unit to fully power up, and a few minutes to associate with another unit, espe- cially if GPS is required for time synchronization. 2.1.5 Step 4—Review the Transceiver’s Configuration One setting must be known before beginning configuration on a unit; The IP address. Check with your System Administrator for this information. (Default address…

Page 1 of 3 FCC September 4, 2012 RE: FCC ID: E5MDS-MERCIDU3A Attention: Stan Lyles Please find our responses to your comments on this application below: Your operational description describes need to be Modified: 1) We would prefer to have separate CBP descriptions and Theory of Operation. In your case you can leave the Theory of Operation as is but cut and past the CBP parts into a separate CBP description. Response: The Theory of Operation for each of these products and the CBP descriptions has been separated into their own documents. One CBP description document has been uploaded that is applicable for both Basestation and Subscriber versions of hardware. 2) Your CBP Description should not contain both Restricted Contention Protocol and Unrestricted Contention Protocol You need to remove the Restricted Contention Protocol. Response: The restricted contention protocol description has been removed from the documentation. 3) Then each CBT (GE MDS LLC, FCC ID: E5MDS-MERCIDU3A, EA551457 and FCC ID: E5MDS-MERCODU3A, EA347120) description should be add a simple sentence to indicate that this description is for the: Bases or remote as applicable. Then you need to define the compatible FCC IDs that the Base or remote is compatible with. This is only necessary to identify the far end compatible device by FCC ID in the initial application. Response: The new CBT description document is titled “GE MDS Contention Protocol Description.” Within this document, the FCC IDs of all GE MDS 3650 devices are listed and their compatibility with each other. Page 2 of 3 4) I would simply add at the beginning this description is for the Remote, then a brief statement that it will not initiate a transmission unless it sees a configured Base station, this is done every frame (5 ms) etc—Use your own words. Then say the following is the CBP system description for both the base and the remotes. Response: Within the CBP document, a paragraph has been added about the TDD system design having subscribers detect the CBP Basestation before beginning transmissions, thus the protocol is applicable to both Subscriber and Basestation units. 5) When a new device is granted you do not have to file a Class II change for to all other existing compatible devices. However, this is treated as a Class I Change and a manufacture would need to maintain records too identify all compatible devices. This would be typical of any good system provider. Response: Our subscriber and Basestation units have been internally validated to be operational only with each other at this time. If, in the future, we require compatibility with third party vendors to enable the CBP protocol we will perform extensive testing to ensure compliance with both regulatory and product performance expectations. 6) Define default value before users make any adjustment? Response: For each of the configurable parameters (Interference listening duration and Power detection Threshold) the default values have been added to the CBP description (Sections 2.a and 2.b 7) I do not see test results for demonstrating CBT threshold settings for the Base Station... Typical demonstration shows a conducted test between a Base Station and remote. A CW signal is introduced at (1) just outside and below occupied Bandwidth , (2) inside at low end of occupied Bandwidth, (3) inside at the middle of occupied Bandwidth, (4) inside at high end of occupied Bandwidth, (5) outside and just above occupied Bandwidth, This is done at two thresholds Low and high end of range A simple table showing CW signal at introduced Frequency at Threshold and just below threshold A Yes/NO indication for each cell to indicate CBT detection (Yes: CBT active remote not transmitting—at threshold No Below and No Out of band.) Response: A test report titled “GE MDS Mercury3650 CBT Test Report” has been uploaded reporting the functionality CBP when presented with CW interferers. In addition to your request for data at the lowest and highest threshold settings, measurement results for the default threshold have also been included. These tests were performed for each of the 5 operating bandwidths that we are capable of operating in. A list of frequencies used for the testing are listed in the document. We chose +/‐1MHz outside of the occupied signal bandwidth for the out‐of‐band CW tone Page 3 of 3 tests and used the lower, middle, and upper frequencies of the passband per your instructions for the in‐band tests. All of the data captured shows that our product detects the in‐band CW signals within 1dB of the configured threshold, while out of band CW interferers are not detected at threshold levels due to receive channel filtering. 8. User manual mentions the device has an associated / optional Wi-Fi and antenna; what is approval status for it please (FCC ID, modular or not, etc). Response: The WiFi module that we are using has a modular approval. All details including FCC ID, frequency range, and Grant date have been added to the Mercury2‐ MIMO 3659 ODU Theory Of Operation in Section 2.5, and the Mercury 2‐MIMO 3650 IDU Theory of operation in Section 2.4. 9.
