MEAD BOND - SIZE: 8.500” X 5.500” - SCALE: 1-1 - FOLDING: ALBUM FOLD - BINDING: SADDLE-STITCH 214601 X1 - IMAGE 1 CONSOLE DESCRIPTION Novi’s 5-channel Wireless Intercom Consoles provide a wireless audio communication link between up to five Console stations and one or two remote Wireless Doorbell Intercom units. The intercom uses digital signals to control the stations called and provide a unique “security code” that prevents other nearby Novi 5-channel intercoms from accessing the system. Either of two radio frequencies can be selected for the intercoms to further eliminate the chance of interference from adjacent systems. The Console features five station number pushbuttons for selecting the party to call. The ALL CALL button can be used to call all five stations. Pressing the TALK button calls the selected station(s), then controls the direction of the conversation. Each intercom user presses their TALK button to activate the microphone during the conversation. The Doorbell works with Console stations 4 or 5. Pressing the Doorbell’s TALK button sounds a “ding-dong” (station 5), or “dong” (station 4) at the Console, then the conversation begins by pressing the units’ talk buttons. For privacy, a MUTE switch on each Console can be set to prevent Wireless Doorbell tones and ALL CALL messages from sounding through that Console’s speaker. The Console can be placed on a table or shelf, or mounted to a wall with the screws provided. The small, antenna adjusts for Console table or wall mounting. Power for the Console is provided by a small plug-in transformer. The Doorbell attaches to a wall with the mounting plate provided. Two 9-volt alkaline batteries power the Doorbell intercom. STATION INDICATORS Indicators light when a station number button is pressed to show the station(s) that will be called. Indicators blink to show a call in progress. MICROPHONE High-gain microphone monitors audio while the Doorbell’s TALK button is pressed. 2. SPEAKER Sounds audio from the intercom Console. Volume is adjustable with the volume control (see Item #6). 3. POWER INDICATOR Lights to show that Doorbell power is on. Doorbell power automatically switches ON when TALK button is pressed. The power automatically switches OFF 15 seconds after the last intercom communication. 4. DOORBELL-TALK BUTTON Press to turn ON the Doorbell power and sound the chime at all of the intercom Consoles (Consoles with their MUTE switch ON will not sound the Doorbell chime). VOLUME CONTROL Sets the volume level of the Doorbell’s speaker. 7. BATTERY DOOR Slides off rear case to expose the battery compartment, CHANNEL switch, and FREQUENCY switch. 8. LINEAR CORPORATION FCC ID: EF4 RFI00002 1.0PRODUCT DESCRIPTION The RF Intercom Doorbell (RI-D) is a five-channel intercom unit, which allows half-duplex conversation over either a 467.6875 MHz or a 467.5625 narrow band FM signal. Key features include: 15 house codes to reduce interference from units in other systems. 2 station codes: front door/ back door (programmable via a switch). A Call/Talk button to turn the unit on and send the bell tones/voice over RF. A Program button to program a house code into the unit. Power on LED. Digital Calling to activate the unit only when the house and station codes match. Tone squelch. Internal volume control. Internal speaker & microphone. Internal antenna. 2.0HARDWARE/SOFTWARE SPECIFICATIONS 2.1MECHANICAL All electronics shall be contained in a plastic enclosure with the dimensions 5.5 x 3.75 x 1.75 inches. The body and button colors shall be PMS 427 and PMS 432, respectively. 2.2ELECTRICAL 2.2.1 DC CHARACTERISTICS Input Power:9VDC supplied by battery on board Input Current:50 mA receive, 120 mA transmit 2.2.2 RF CHARACTERISTICS System Frequency:467.6875 MHz or 467.5625 MHz (+/- 2.5 PPM) Modulation Type: Narrow Band FM Receiver Sensitivity: -90 dBm minimum Transmitter Power Output: 100 mW nominal 2.3 REGULATORY AGENCIES The unit shall comply with FCC part 95 regulations (FRS) and Part 15 for unintentional radiators. 2.4 ENVIRONMENTAL Temperature: -20°C to +60°C LINEAR CORPORATION FCC ID: EF4 RFI00002 2.5USER INTERFACE 2.5.1CALL/TALK BUTTON The Wireless DoorBell unit is normally powered down when not in use. At the press of the Call/Talk button, the unit powers up and sends out the house code, the station code (“5” or “4”), the receiving stations code (All Call). Then the bell tones are sent out. The bell tones consist of a 550 Hz (“ding”) and a 450Hz (“dong”) signals. Each bell tone is faded over a one-second period. If the station code is “4”, “dong” is sent out only. The bell tones will be sent once per button press and release. The unit shuts off automatically after 20 seconds of inactivity. If there is an answer from the residence, the button will then function as a Press- to-Talk. The user may press the Talk button to initiate RF data and voice transmission. At the press of the button, with the microphone disabled, the unit sends out the house code, the station code (“5” or “4”), and the receiving stations code (All Call) continously. The unit enables the microphone and allows the user to transmit voice over RF. When the button is released, the unit disables voice transmission and sends out subaudible tone sequence to tell the receiving station to shut off its speaker. The unit then goes into a Receive Mode and waits for a response. The unit shuts off automatically after 20 seconds of inactivity. 2.5.2STATION CODE JUMPER The station code is programmable via a slide switch on-board. If the switch is in position 1, the station code will be “5”. Otherwise, the station code will be “4”. The two station codes are used to differentiate between the units installed at the front door and back door. 2.5.3POWER ON LED A green LED is used to indicate that the power is on. 2.5.4VOLUME CONTROL POTENTIOMETER An internal potentiometer is used to adjust the speaker volume. 2.5.5POWER INPUT The power to the unit is supplied via two 9V batteries on-board. 2.6MICROCONTROLLER All programming and control functions are performed via a microcontroller on- board. 2.7RF TRANSMITTER The RF Transmitter Circuitry transmits FM data and audio over either a 467.6875 MHz or a 467.5625 MHz carrier signal. The Transmitter is disabled when its supply is shut off by the microcontroller. LINEAR CORPORATION FCC ID: EF4 RFI00002 2.8RF RECEIVER The RF Receiver Circuitry receives FM signals and converts them to audio and data that is usable by the microcontroller. 2.9MICROPHONE An internal microphone, which is enabled or disabled by the microcontroller, is used for audio input. 2.10SPEAKER An internal speaker, which is enabled or disabled by the microcontroller, is used for audio output. 2.11SQUELCH To reduce the noise that is generated on the speaker when either the Talk button or the DoorBell button is released, the unit sends out a subaudible tone sequence to the receiver before it shuts off RF. The receiver disables its speaker before RF goes away. If the tone gets corrupted for some reason, a squelch signal that is generated by the RF Receiver is sent to the microcontroller. 2.12CALLING STATION DATA FORMAT The transmitting station sends out a continuous subaudible tone sequence when the Press-to-Talk or All Call is pressed. The code consists of the following: House Code first digit (1 - 5) House Code second digit (6 - 8) Calling station number (1 - 5) Called station number (1 - 6) (6 is for an All Call) 3.0PROGRAMMING The default station code at the factory, will be “5”. To change the code to “4”, the slide switch on the back of the unit must be toggled by the user. To program the house code, the unit must be in the program mode. To place the unit in Program Mode, with the power to the unit off, the user must press and hold the Program button until the unit beeps the house code. Then the Program button must be released. The unit will then be in Program Mode. The Talk button is pressed until the desired house code is set. The unit will beep the house code after each press of the Talk button. The Program button may be pressed to exit the Program Mode or the unit will power down after 20 seconds. 4.0 TRANSMITTER ALIGNMENT / MICROPHONE / TRANSMIT DATA TEST Pressing the Call/Talk button will cause the unit to transmit a carrier on the selected RF frequency (slide switch) with the microphone enabled. 4.1 RECEIVER ALIGNMENT / SPEAKER / SQUELCH / DATA RECEIVE TEST LINEAR CORPORATION FCC ID: EF4 RFI00002 Releasing the Call/Talk button will place the unit into the Receive Mode allowing the receiver section to be aligned. RI-D PCB LEVEL, TEST PROCEDURE 1.0OVERVIEW This is a bench test for the RI-D PCB assembly. This test should be completed before the PCB is used in higher assemblies. 2.0EQUIPMENT REQUIRED Note: Equivalent equipment may be substituted. Connect 9 volt power to one of the battery connectors using the same polarity as a 9 volt battery. Press S1 (DOORBELL/TALK) button to power up the unit under test in the test mode. 4.0RF ALIGNMENT 4.1Connect the frequency counter to E1 (Antenna connection). Note: Make sure that the frequency counter can accept +20 dBm of input power. If not, place an attenuator on the input of the frequency counter to bring the power level within the tolerance of the counter. 4.2Place S3 (DOOR SELECT) in the FRONT position (switch toward S4). Place S4 (FREQUENCY) in the "A" position (Switch toward S3). 4.3Power up unit in test mode (TP1 grounded) by pressing S1 (DOORBELL/TALK). Note: The unit under test will come up in the transmit mode while S1 (DOORBELL/TALK) is pressed. 4.4Verify that the current from the 9 VDC power supply is between 75 and 125 mA while S1 (DOORBELL/TALK) is pressed. 4.5Adjust L12 until the voltage at TP2 is 3.5 volts DC (+/- 0.2 volts) while S1 (DOORBELL/TALK) is pressed. 4.6Adjust C76 until the frequency at E1 is 467.6875 MHz (+/- 0.00025MHz) on the frequency counter while S1 (DOORBELL/TALK) is pressed. Release S1 (DOORBELL/TALK) when finished. 4.7Press and release S2 (PROGRAM) to perform the EEPROM test and set the house code to factory default. The speaker will beep once if the EEPROM is OK. The speaker will beep 5 times if the EEPROM test has failed. 4.8Place S4 (FREQUENCY) in the "B" position (away from S3). 4.9Press S1 (DOORBELL/TALK) and verify that the frequency counter now reads 467.5625 MHz (+/- 0.00025 MHz). 4.10Release S1 (DOORBELL/TALK) and place S4 (FREQUENCY) in the "A" position (Switch toward S3). 4.11Disconnect the frequency counter and connect the spectrum analyzer to E1 (Antenna connection). Set the spectrum analyzer to a center frequency of 467.6875 MHz and a span of 100 KHz. 4.12Press S1 (DOORBELL/TALK) and verify that the bandwidth of the signal on the spectrum analyzer is less than 12.5 KHz and greater than 6 KHz. 4.13Release S1 (DOORBELL/TALK) and verify that the current from the 9 VDC power supply is between 30 and 75 mA. 4.14Verify that the voltage at TP4 is between 1 and 4 volts DC. 4.15Remove the spectrum analyzer from E1 (Antenna). Connect the signal generator to E1 (Antenna). 4.16Set the signal generator to 467.6875 MHz (+/- 0.0005 MHz) at -67 dBm. 4.17Adjust L18 until the voltage at TP9 is 2.5 volts DC (+/- 0.1 volt). 4.18Turn the RF output of the signal generator OFF. 4.19Turn R75 fully counter-clockwise. 4.20Adjust the R66 (VOLUME) so that the hissing noise from the test fixture speaker can be heard. 4.21Adjust R75 clockwise to the point where the hissing noise stops. 4.22Turn ON the signal generator and set its output to -87 dBm with 2 KHz deviation of FM modulation at 400Hz. Note: The 400Hz tone should be heard on the speaker. 4.23Adjust R75 clockwise until the 400 Hz tone can no longer be heard. 4.24Set R75 half way between its current position and the position it was in after step 6.20. The squelch will now be at the optimal setting. 4.25Turn ON the RI-C test console. 4.26Press S1 (DOORBELL/TALK) and verify that the RF Intercomm test console beeps while S1 (DOORBELL/TALK) is pressed. (Data encode test.) 4.27Press the TALK button on the RF Intercom test console and verify that the speaker of the unit under test beeps. (Data decode test.) 4.28Remove the ground from TP1. 4.29Remove power from the PCB. 4.30Secure L12 and L15 with wax (Item 121). This concludes the test procedure. APPENDIX 1 A completed RF Intercom console unit is used to perform the data communications test. This unit is modified by soldering a 1K resistor from TP1 to GROUND. This resistor will cause the unit to power on in the data test mode.
