This User’s Guide introduces you to the many ways your computer can help you be more productive. This guide provides clear and concise information about the computer, so read it thoroughly. Basic care and tips for using your computer Connecting your computer Connecting the computer is as easy as 1-2-3. 1Insert the battery pack into the battery compartment, and press down until it clicks into place. 2Connect one end of the AC adapter to the power jack on the computer’s left panel and the other end to a properly-grounded power outlet. 1 Getting to know your TravelMate26 Touchpad The built-in touchpad is a PS/2-compatible pointing device that senses movement on its surface. This means the cursor responds as you move your finger on the surface of the touchpad. The central location on the palm rest provides optimum comfort and support. Note: When using an external USB or serial mouse, you can press Fn-F7 to disable the touchpad. . Touchpad basics The following items teach you how to use the touchpad: •Move your finger across the touchpad to move the cursor. •Press the left (1) and right (3) buttons located on the edge of the touchpad to do selection and execution functions. These two buttons are similar to the left and right buttons on a mouse. Tapping on the touchpad produces similar results. •Use the 4-way scroll (2) key (top/bottom/left/right) to scroll a page up, down, left or right. This button mimics your cursor pressing on the vertical and horizontal scroll bars of Windows applications. The touchpad is sensitive to finger movements. Hence, the lighter the touch, the better the response. Tapping harder will not increase the touchpad’s responsiveness. Optical drive The computer comes with a USB CD-ROM drive or an IEEE 1394 DVD/ CD-RW combo drive. There are audio ports on the right panel of the computer. See “Right view” on page 7 for more information on connecting external audio devices. Adjusting the volume Adjusting the volume on the computer is as easy as pressing some buttons. See “Hot keys” on page 21 for more informations on adjusting the speaker volume. System activity refers to any activity involving one or more of the following devices: keyboard, mouse, floppy drive, hard disk, and video memory. If no activity is detected for a period of time (called an inactivity timeout), the computer stops some or all of these devices in order to conserve energy. This computer employs a power management scheme that supports ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) which allows for maximum power conservation and maximum performance at the same time. Windows handles all power-saving chores for your computer. TMC110-en.book Page 30 Monday, March 3, 2003 4:46 PM 31 Moving around with your TravelMate This section gives you tips and hints on things to consider when moving around or traveling with your computer. Disconnecting from the desktop Follow these steps to disconnect your computer from external accessories: 1Save your work in progress. 2Remove any media, diskette or compact disc, from the drive(s). 3Shut down the operating system. 4Turn off the computer. 5Close the display cover. 6Disconnect from the AC adapter. 7Disconnect the keyboard, pointing device, printer, external monitor, and other external devices. 8Disconnect the Kensington lock if you are using one to secure the computer. Moving around “when you are just moving within short distances, for example, from your office desk to a meeting room” Preparing the computer Before moving the computer, close and latch the display cover to place it in Sleep mode. You can now safely take the computer anywhere you go within the building. To bring the computer out of Sleep mode, open the display; then press, slide and release the power switch. If you are taking the computer to a client's office or a different building, you may choose to shut down the computer: 1Click on Start, Turn off Computer. 2Select Turn Off. - or - TMC110-en.book Page 31 Monday, March 3, 2003 4:46 PM 1 Getting to know your TravelMate32 you can put the computer in Sleep mode by pressing Fn-F4. Then close and latch the display. When you are ready to use the computer again, unlatch and open the display; then press, slide and release the power switch. Note: If the sleep indicator is off, the computer has entered Hibernation mode and turned off. If the power indicator is off but the sleep indicator is on, the computer has entered Sleep mode. In both cases, press, slide and release the power switch to turn the computer back on. Note that the computer may enter Hibernation mode after it is in Sleep mode for a period of time. What to bring to short meetings A fully charged battery runs the computer for about two and a half hours under most circumstances. If your meeting is shorter than that, you probably do not need to bring anything with you other than the computer. What to bring to long meetings If your meeting will last longer than two and a half hours or if your battery is not fully charged, you may want to bring the AC adapter with you to plug in your computer in the meeting room. If the meeting room does not have an electrical outlet, reduce the drain on the battery by putting the computer in Sleep mode. Press…

51 Launch Manager Launch Manager allows you to set the four launch keys located above the keyboard. See “Launch keys” on page 24 for the location of the launch key. You can access the Launch Manager by clicking on Start, All Programs, and then Launch Manager to start the application. Launch Manager and wireless features The boot status settings for Wireless Device (Wireless LAN) and Bluetooth Device determine if these wireless features are enabled or disabled at startup. You can manually switch on or off Wireless LAN and Bluetooth by pressing the button a certain number of times. The sequence is as follows: •Wireless LAN off, Bluetooth off •Wireless LAN on, Bluetooth off (wireless status icon lights red) •Wireless LAN off, Bluetooth on (wireless status icon flashes green) •Wireless LAN on, Bluetooth on (wireless status icon lights red and flashes green) TMC110-en.book Page 51 Monday, March 3, 2003 4:46 PM 2 Customizing your computer52 Manually turning on the wireless features does not change the default boot status setting which is re-enabled when you restart your computer. BIOS Utility The BIOS Utility is a hardware configuration program built into your computer’s BIOS (basic input/output system). Your computer is already properly configured and optimized, and you do not need to run this utility. However, if you encounter configuration problems, you may need to run it. To access the BIOS Utility, press F2 during the POST (power-on self-test) while the TravelMate logo is being displayed. Note: The sample screen shown above is for your reference only. Actual values may differ. For optimum settings, press F9 to load setup defaults. Then press F10 to save the changes and exit the BIOS Utility. Easy answers and solutions are provided for each one. I pressed the power switch and opened the display, but the computer does not start or boot-up. Look at the Power indicator (refer to “Indicators” on page 18): •If it is not lit, no power is being applied to the computer. Check the following: •If you are running on battery power, it may be low and unable to power the computer. Connect the AC adapter to recharge the battery pack. •Make sure that the AC adapter is plugged in properly to the computer and to the power outlet. •If it is lit, check the following: •Is a non-bootable (non-system) diskette in the floppy drive? Remove or replace it with a system diskette and press Ctrl-Alt- Del to restart the system. •The operating system files may be damaged or missing. Insert the startup disk you created during Windows setup into the floppy drive and press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart the system. This will diagnose your system and make necessary fixes. Nothing appears on the screen. The computer’s power management system automatically blanks the screen to save power. Press any key to turn the display back on. If pressing a key does not turn the display back on, three things might be the cause: •The brightness level might be too low. Press Fn-→ (increase) and Fn- ← (decrease) to adjust the brightness level. •The display device might be set to an external monitor. Press the display toggle hot key Fn-F5 to toggle the display back to the computer. •If the Sleep indicator is lit, the computer is in Sleep mode. Press, slide, and release the power switch to resume. TMC110-en.book Page 55 Monday, March 3, 2003 4:46 PM 3 Troubleshooting your computer56 Image is not full-screen. Make sure that the resolution is set to 1024x768 which the system supports natively. Right-click on your Windows desktop and select Properties to bring up the Display Properties dialog box. Then click on the Settings tab to make sure the resolution is set to the appropriate resolution. Resolutions lower than the specified resolution are not full-screen on the computer or on an external monitor. No audio is heard from the computer. Check the following: •The volume may be muted. In Windows, look at the volume control (speaker) icon on the taskbar. If it is crossed-out, click on the icon and deselect the Mute option. •The speakers may be turned off. Press Fn-F8 to turn the speakers on (this hot key also turns the speakers off). •The volume level may be too low. In Windows, look at the volume control icon on the taskbar. You can also use the volume control buttons to adjust the volume. See “Hot keys” on page 21. •If headphones, earphones or external speakers are connected to the line-out port on the computer’s right panel, the internal speakers automatically turn off. The keyboard does not respond. Try attaching an external keyboard to the USB connector on the computer’s rear. If it works, contact your dealer or an authorized service center as the internal keyboard cable may be loose. The infrared port does not work. Check the following: •Make sure that the infrared ports of the two devices are facing each other (+/- 15 degrees) a maximum of 1 meter apart. •Make sure that there is a clear path between the two infrared ports. Nothing should be blocking the ports. •Make sure that you have the appropriate software running on both devices (for file transfers) or that you have the appropriate drivers (for printing to an infrared printer). •During the POST, press F2 to access the BIOS Utility and verify that TMC110-en.book Page 56 Monday, March 3, 2003 4:46 PM 57 the infrared port is enabled. •Make sure that bo…

Computers use radio communications to send data between each other. You can communicate directly with other wireless computers, or connect to an existing network through a wireless access point. When you set up your wireless adapter, you select the operating mode for the kind of wireless network you want. You can use your wireless adapter to connect to other similar wireless devices that comply with the 802.11 standard for wireless networking. Choosing a Wireless LAN Wireless LANs can operate with or without access points, depending on the number of users in the network. Infrastructure mode uses access points to allow wireless computers to send and receive information. Wireless computers transmit to the access point, the access point receives the information and rebroadcasts it to other computers. The access point can also connect to a wired network or to the Internet. Multiple access points can work together to provide coverage over a wide area. Peer-to-Peer mode, also called Ad Hoc mode, works without access points and allows wireless computers to send information directly to other wireless computers. Ad Hoc Mode is only supported in 802.11b and 802.11g networks. You can use Peer-to-Peer mode to network computers in a home or small office or to set up a temporary wireless network for a meeting. Configuring a Wireless LAN There are three basic components that must be configured for an 802.11 wireless LAN to operate properly: l Network Name: Each wireless network uses a unique Network Name to identify the network. This name is called the Service Set Identifier (SSID). When you set up your wireless adapter, you specify the SSID. If you want to connect to an existing network, you must use the name for that network. If you are setting up your own network you can make up your own name and use it on each computer. The name can be up to 32 characters long and contain letters and numbers. l Profiles: When you set up your computer to access a wireless network, the wireless client manager creates a profile for the wireless settings that you specify. If you want to connect to another network, you can scan for existing networks and make a temporary connection, or create a new profile for that network. After you create profiles, your computer will automatically connect when you change locations. l Security: The 802.11 wireless networks use encryption to help protect your data. Wired equivalent privacy (WEP) uses a 64-bit or 128-bit shared encryption key to scramble data. Before a computer transmits data, it scrambles the data using the secret encryption key. The receiving computer uses this same key to unscramble the data. If you are connecting to an existing network, use the encryption key provided by the administrator of the wireless network. If you are setting up your own network you can make up your own key and use it on each computer. m Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is a security enhancement that strongly increases the level of data protection and access control to a WLAN. WPA mode enforces 802.1x authentication and key-exchange to strengthen data encryption. WPA utilizes its Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP). TKIP provides important data encryption enhancements that include a per-packet key mixing function, a message integrity check (MIC) named "Michael", an extended initialization vector (IV) with sequencing rules, and a also re-keying mechanism. ATCB may also choose to accept test data from ISO Guide 25 accredited laboratories owned by Applicant, provided the requirements of 2.3.1. are met. 2.3.1 Employees of Applicant shall not participate in any tests, evaluations, or assessments described in sections 2.2 or 2.3 above without the presence and supervision of an ATCB engineer or technician. 2.4 If requested for sample purposes (as required by the FCC), client shall supply ATCB, at no charge, with at least one test sample of each Device, including the necessary peripherals, connecting cables, accessories or other hardware or software (hereinafter collectively referred to as "support equipment") required for testing, evaluation, and assessment. 2.5 Applicant shall supply ATCB, at no charge, with all technical documentation and materials required for the testing, evaluation, and assessment of such Devices and support equipment. 2.5.1 Technical documentation and materials include, but are not limited to, any relevant operating instructions, schematics, block diagrams, photographs, prior tests and certificates concerning the safety of the Devices, its components or support equipment. 2.6 Applicant recognizes that Device samples, including support equipment, may be damaged or completely destroyed when subjected to ATCB's testing and evaluation process. Applicant shall hold ATCB harmless for any such damage or destruction to its equipment. 2.7 If necessary ATCB shall test, evaluate, or assess Applicant's equipment within 30 business days of ATCB's receipt of such Devices, support equipment and technical documentation, and to work diligently until certification is granted or denied, or Applicant decides to abandon testing, evaluation, and assessment on such Devices.
