AES 7880-B UHF DATA TRANSCEIVER USER MANUAL October 1, 2004 Notice: The exterior of any product containing this device must contain the following label: “Contains FCC ID : L9N-7880-B” Warning: This device must be professionally installed with appropriate power supply and antenna in order to ensure proper operation. The antenna gain must not exceed 10.5 dBi. Warning: This device may not be modified by the user. Any modifications not expressly approved by AES Corporation could void the user’s authority to operate the equipment. Warning: For FCC RF exposure compliance purpose, this device may not be incorporated into any product which operates within 20 cm of a person under normal operation. 1.0 Description The AES Model 7880-B UHF Data Transceiver permits data to be transmitted in the 450 ~ 470 MHz band of frequencies. The maximum output power is 120 mW. The data rate can be in the range of 2400 ~ 9600 baud. The 7880-B interfaces with an embedded microprocessor using a simple 4-wire serial Programming Port. The operating parameters are set by AES approved software. B2.0 Signals The 7880-B has 20 pins, consisting of 2 rows of 10 pins each. In order to adjust the Crystal Oscillator frequency, a suitable frequency counter must be attached to the antenna port. With the 7880-B set to transmit, using Manchester coding, the Crystal Oscillator may be adjusted until the average frequency measured by the frequency counter corresponds to the desired center frequency. The average frequency should be set to within 300 Hz of the desired value. Note: The frequency counter must be capable of measuring up to 470 MHz with an accuracy of 100 Hz in order to ensure proper calibration of the 7880-B. 4.0 Device Programming The operation of the 7880-B is controlled by the Programming Port. The protocol conforms to the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), originated by Motorola. The interface operates in a full duplex manner, with data shifted into the PDI pin at the same time as data is shifted out on the PDO pin. Data transfer cycles are initiated by the low-going transition of the PSEL pin; individual data bits are synchronized to the PCLK pin. B5.0 Data Communication The DIO pin is bidirectional. When the 7880-B is in transmit mode, the DIO pin becomes an input for the data to be transmitted. When the 7880-B is in receive mode, the DIO pin becomes an output. In both cases, the data is synchronized to the DCLK pin.
Response to TCB Findings 1. Please specify the DC voltages and currents in the final RF amp. stage as required by 2.1033(c)(8). Per the client - DC Voltage = 5V, DC Current < 200mA 2. A warning in the manual about the maximum allowed antenna gain is required as instructed by the FCC. See “LabHelp Clarifications” document. Revised manual attached. 3. A warning about the labeling requirement for the host is required in the manual as instructed by the FCC. The manual should instruct the installers of this module to label the exterior of the host so that it states the following; "Contains “FCC ID: L9N-7880-B”. Revised manual attached.

The device is small in size ( 2 x 2 inches at most) and will be used in hosts such as utility meters, etc. Answer: No, the public notice applies only to Part 15 devices. However, we have allowed licensed modules according to the following: Licensed Modular Transmitters Licensed transmitters may be approved as modules for installation into other, final devices provided the following criteria are met: The final device is designed for mobile or fixed operation (Portable is not permitted - Reference TCB Exclusion List (17 July 2002) II(g). The maximum antenna gain to allow compliance with RF exposure requirements is listed on the Grant of Certification for the module The licensed module must have a FCC ID label on the module itself. That FCC ID label must be visible through a window on the final device or it must be visible when an access panel, door or cover is easily removed. If not, a second label must be placed on the outside of the final device that contains the following text: Contains “FCC ID: xxxyyyzzz” The Grant should include the following words in the device description or grant notes: “modular transmitter” or “transmitter module” Question 2: We would like to have some guidance on the output power limit of 120mW for 90.217 (exemption from technical standards) in the case of external antenna use, 1. Is this output power limit at the antenna terminal only? 2. What happens when the antenna gain is added and the EIRP exceeds the 120mW limit? Can this case be still considered to comply with 90.217 or should the device apply for entire Part 90 approval. 3. Is there a limit on the antenna gain if exceeding of 120mW EIRP is allowed? Answer: 1.) Yes, the output power of the device at the antenna terminal should not exceed 120 mW. 2.) If the conducted power is less than 120 m W, the device is exempt irregardless of antenna gain. Most Part 90 Grants list the conducted output power. 3.) Refer to the specific rule part for antenna gain requirements. You must perform all test required in Part 2 for certification even if there are no technical requirements.
