22611 Markey Ct.; Unit 110; Sterling, VA 20166 (703) 421-2086 08/18/99 PART NO. 72-76060 PERSONAL PROTECTION DEVICE (PPD) INSTRUCTION SHEET Introduction The Dominion Wireless, Inc. personal protection device (PPD) is a body-worn radio transmitter that emits an alert signal when activated. The PPD is intended to be worn on the belt of the user. When used in a facility equipped with the Dominion Wireless, Inc. Personal Alarm Location System (PALS), the transmitter notifies security staff that an alarm transmission has occurred and reports the location of the user on a computerized map of the facility. A unique ID code identifies the particular unit in alarm. The PPD is activated by removing a pull-pin from the end of the PPD housing. Operating Instructions Wearing the PPD Always wear the PPD on the belt in a location that permits easy access to the pull-pin. It is recommended that the unit be used with the optional carrying pouch for added protection. The PPD can also be worn on the belt with the included belt clip. Always position the belt clip (also the battery cover) surface towards the body for optimal performance. The performance of the unit is not degraded if worn under clothing. Activation The PPD is activated by completely removing the pull-pin. The unit transmits its unique ID code once each time the pin is removed. It takes approximately one quarter (.25) of a second for the transmitter to complete the alarm sequence once the pull-pin is removed. Your ID and position will be reported to security staff within three seconds of activation. RE-INSERTING THE PULL-PIN DOES NOT PREVENT THE TRANSMITTER FROM SENDING THE ALERT SIGNAL. Always return the pull-pin to its mating plug in the PPD housing so that the unit is armed and to prevent the pull-pin from becoming lost. The pull-pin is equipped with a flexible lanyard to make activation easier. Do not cover the PPD with your hand when activating – simply remove the pull-pin. Testing Test the PPD at the beginning of each shift. Your facility administrator will develop a procedure for you to warn the security staff that a test transmission is under way and for the security staff to communicate to you that the unit has passed the test. Follow their established procedures. Since the PPD is a battery-operated device, it is imperative that you test its operation at the beginning of each shift. The internal battery will operate reliably for one year when activated three times per day (once each, at the beginning of three shifts). The battery must be replaced once every twelve months. If the battery is operational at the beginning of your shift, but begins to discharge below its operating threshold during your shift, the unit will automatically transmit a low battery alert to the central computer. This will instruct the security staff to contact you and have your PPD replaced. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPLACE THE BATTERY YOURSELF. THIS PROCEDURE IS INTENDED FOR TRAINED FACILITY MAINTENANCE STAFF. 22611 Markey Ct.; Unit 110; Sterling, VA 20166 (703) 421-2086 08/18/99 Do’s & Don’ts Do Always wear the PPD on your belt. Always position the PPD on your belt such that the pull-pin is accessible. Always wear the transmitter with the battery cover and belt clip (if used) towards your body. If your PPD fails to transmit upon activation, return the unit to maintenance immediately. If you accidentally remove the pull-pin, contact security immediately to report the false alarm. Don’t: Submerge the PPD in water or expose it to pounding rain. Cover the unit with your hand or metal objects while transmitting. Wear or store the PPD without the pull-pin completely inserted . Replace batteries unless you are a certified maintenance technician. Remove the marking labels on the transmitter. Drop or otherwise abuse the transmitter. Operator Maintenance and Cleaning There are no operator-servicable components or adjustments on the PPD. If the unit becomes soiled, wipe with a damp (not dripping) cloth or paper towel. Do not use other solvents or cleaning agents on the transmitter housing. If the carrying pouch becomes saturated with moisture, obtain a new pouch since this can potentially impact locating accuracy.
