Operational Description

T900 TRANSMITTER THEORY OF OPERATION The T900 is a high-performance, eight-channel, FM transmitter board capable of transmitting analog or digital data. Digital information is modulated at the transmitter using FSK (frequency shift keying), the binary form of frequency modulation. An accurate 12.00 MHz VCXO (voltage-controlled crystal oscillator) serves s the frequency reference for the transmitter. The modulation input pin is connected to the VCXO through a two-pole low-pass filter. The low-pass filter is used to shape the incoming data and limit the transmission bandwidth to 25kHZ. The modulated 12.00 MHz reference frequency is applied to the Phase-Locked Loop (PLL). The PLL, combined with a 902-928 MHz VCO, forms a stable frequency synthesizer that can be programmed to oscillate at a number of preset frequencies via the channel select lines. An on-board micro-controller reads the channel-selection lines and programs the PLL to the desired channel frequency. The micro-controller also monitors the status of the PLL and indicates when the transmitter is stable and ready to transmit data by asserting the CTS line high. A buffer amplifier is used to isolate the VCO from the antenna. The output of the buffer amplifier is connected to a LPF which is used to suppress harmonic emissions. An RF pad is used to adjust the transmitter level to the antenna to meet FCC Part 15 Regulations.

The transmitter offers eight selectable channels and, when paired with an HP Series-II receiver, is capable of transmitting analog and digital information for distances up to 1/4 mile. To assure robust performance under all field conditions the transmitter employs an adva n c e d microprocessor-controlled synthesized architecture.L i ke all Linx modules, the HP Series-II requires no tuning and in most cases no ex t e rnal RF components ( except an antenna), making integration stra i g h t fo r ward even fo r engineers lacking previous RF ex p e ri e n c e. Baseband components occupy the rear of the board while high-frequency components are grouped on the front. PRODUCTION CONSIDERATIONS The SIP module may be installed using hand- or wave-solder techniques. The module should not be subjected to reflow. If the module is subject to production wash cycles, adequate drying time should be allowed prior to power-up.If the wash cycle introduces contaminants, the module’s perfo rmance may be adversely affected. Digital information is modulated at the transmitter using FSK (frequency shift keying), the binary fo rm of frequency modulation. FSK offers significant advantages over AM-based modulation methods, i.e., increased noise immunity and the ability of the receiver to “capture”in the presence of multiple signals. These advantages will be particularly appreciated in crowded bands like those in which the HP-II operates. While FSK modulation is not the most bandwidth- efficient manner of modulating digital data, it is an excellent choice for reliable, low-cost, low-power RF products such as the HP Series-II. To transmit analog information the module reverts to FMmodulation. In this mode simple to complex waveforms can be introduced at the transmitter’s data pin and recovered with minimal distortion at the receiver’s analog output pin. The user-supplied antenna is connected at pin 2 (see Figure 1).The HP Series- II transmitters are designed to operate with a 50-ohm load. An accurate 12.00MHz VCXO (voltage-controlled crystal oscillator) serves as the frequency reference for the transmitter. The modulation input pin is connected to the VCXO through a two-pole low-pass filter. The low-pass filter is used to shape the incoming data and limit the transmission bandwidth to 25kHz. The reference frequency is directly modulated. This method affords two benefits. First, it eliminates the need for a frequency conversion in the transmitter, reducing size, cost, and current consumption.Second, it allows the modulation to occu…

S. COMPLIANCE, Inc. FCC ID: ORR-T900 LSC-H. E. D. 90245pageof 27 7 1.4 INTRODUCTION On September 30 and October 4 of 1999, a series of Radiated Emissions tests were performed on one sample model of the H. E. D. T900, a 900 MHz transmitter module designed to be used in a variety of remote controlled automotive accessories. These tests were performed using the test procedures outlined in ANSI C63.4-1992 for intentional radiators, and in accordance with the limits set forth in FCC Part 15.249 for a low power transmitter. These tests were performed by Thomas T Lee of L. S. Compliance, Inc. 1.5 PURPOSE The above mentioned tests were performed in order to determine the compliance of the T900 with limits contained in various provisions of Title 47 CFR, FCC Part 15, including: 15.10915.209 15.20515.249 All radiated emissions tests were performed to measure the emissions in the frequency bands described by the above sections, and to determine whether said emissions are below the limits established by the above sections. These tests were performed in accordance with the procedure described in the American National Standard for methods of measurement of Radio-Noise Emissions from Low-Voltage Electrical and Electronic Equipment in the Range of 9 kHz to 40 GHz (ANSI C63.4-1992). Another document used as reference for the EMI receiver specification was the International Special Committee on Radio Interference (CISPR) number 16-1 (1993). 1.6 RADIATED EMISSIONS TEST SETUP The test sample was operated within the 3 meter Semi-Anechoic, FCC listed chamber located at L.S. Compliance in Cedarburg, WI. The sample was placed on an 80cm high wooden pedestal, which was centered on the flush-mounted 2m diameter metal turntable. Each test sample was powered via a short cable to the battery operated interface board, operating from a 6- volt battery. The test sample was configured to run in a continuous transmit mode (either cw carrier or a repetitive data string) during the radiated emission measurements. The test sample was set to operate on one of three standard channels and was tested as an intentional radiator, in order to determine compliance within a frequency range of-902-928 MHz, as determined by FCC part 15.31m Please refer to Section 1.11 for pictures of the test setup. L. S. COMPLIANCE, Inc. FCC ID: ORR-T900 LSC-H. E. D. 90245pageof 27 8 1.7 RADIATED EMISSION TEST PROCEDURE The fundamental and spurious (harmonic) emissions of the transmitter were tested for compliance to Title 47 CFR, FCC Part 15.249 limits for low power devices. For the calculations used to determine the limits applicable for the test sample (at the respective operating frequencies) refer to Appendix A. These limits are expressed in decibels (dB) above 1 microvolt per meter (μV/m). The samples were tested from the lowest frequency generated by the transmitter (without going below 9 kHz) to the 10th harmonic of the fundamental frequency generated by the device. These frequencies, and their associated limits, are referenced in Appendix A. The sample was placed on a nonconductive (wooden) pedestal in the 3 Meter chamber and the antenna mast was placed such that the antenna was 3m from the test object. A biconical antenna was used to measure emissions from 30 to 200 MHz, a log periodic was used to measure emissions from 200 to 1000 MHz, and a double ridged waveguide horn was used to measure emissions above 1 GHz. The test object was programmed to operate in continuous transmit, and the resultant signals were maximized by rotating the turntable 360 degrees…
