Wireless LAN User manual Wireless LAN 11 Mbps 5 2. Wireless LAN Basics Wireless LAN (Local Area Networks) systems offer a great number of advantages over a traditional, wired system. Wireless LANs (WLANs) are more flexible, easier to setup and manage and often more cost effective than their wired equivalence. Using radio frequency (RF) technology, WLANs transmit and receive data over the air, minimizing the need for wired connections. Thus, WLANs combine data connectivity with user mobility, and, through simplified configuration, enable movable LANs. With wireless LANs, users can access shared information without looking for a place to plug in and network managers can set up or augment networks without installing or moving wires. Wireless LANs offer the following productivity, convenience and cost advantages over traditional wired networks: • Mobility - Wireless LAN systems can provide LAN users with access to real-time information anywhere in their organization. This mobility supports productivity and service opportunities not possible with wired networks. • Installation Speed and Simplicity - Installing a wireless LAN system can be fast and easy and can eliminate the need to pull cable through walls and ceilings. • Installation Flexibility - Wireless technology allows the network to go where wires cannot go. • Reduced Cost-of-Ownership - While the initial investment required for wireless LAN hardware might be higher than the cost of wired LAN hardware, overall installation expenses and life-cycle costs will be significantly lower. Long-term cost benefits are greatest in dynamic environments requiring frequent moves, adds, and changes. • Scalability - Wireless LAN systems can be configured in a variety of topologies to meet the needs of specific applications and installations. Configurations are easily changed and range from peer- to-peer to full infrastructure networks, also allow roaming over a broad area. Wireless LAN User manual Wireless LAN 11 Mbps 6 3. American Telecommunications Certification Body Inc. 6731 Whittier Ave, McLean, VA 22101 May 21, 2003 RE: FCC ID: P27-LA1P27-LA10 Attention: Ellis Wu I have a few comments on this Application. 1. The Block diagram show an operating frequency listed as 2412 to 2484MHz. Please note that the US band does not cover 2484MHz. Please revise the block diagram to show the proper frequencies for US operation. x 2. FYI – no action needed. Please note that this is a modular approval, not an LMA. LMA’s are approval methods used to show compliance of a module which does not meet all of the modular requirements and needs the host to fulfill one or more of these requirements. The modular approval grant notes will restrict use to OEM installation in mobile router and access point or similar mobile devices only. x 3. Section 3.3 of the manual states that installing the device in a laptop PC an additional PCMCIA adapter must be used. Please note, this is not permitted and will void the grant because the device exceeds the low threshold required for SAR testing (i.e. the device operates at around 99mW). As provided in this application, this device may not be used in conjunction with any adapter which would allow use in a side mount PCMCIA slot on any laptop or in any other adapter or configuration which would allow use as a portable device. This device may not be sold to the end user for such purposes (this is an OEM installed module only and cannot be sold on the open market to the end user). Please remove any reference to use with a PCMCIA adapter and please make it clear that such use voids the grant. xxx 4. Please note that the manual (section 3.4) shows installation in a portable device. This device is restricted to use in mobile router and access point configurations etc. and is restricted to installation by the OEM (no user installation is allowed). Please remove any sections which indicate this device can be installed in any portable configuration. It must be made absolutely clear that this IS RESTRICTED TO MOBILE DEVICE USE; and that no installation in a portable device (including laptop portable) is possible and will void the grant. Also please note that section 3.4 and any other section in which portable or portable laptop configurations are referred violate your rf exposure statement requiring 20cm separation. Please make documentation consistent in regards to rf exposure and mobile configuration use only. xxx 5. FYI – Please note that this is modular device is restricted to use with the antenna with which it was certified. The use of any other antenna requires a PC2 application. ISSUED BY:Advance Data Technology Corporation LAB LOCATION:47 14th Lin, Chiapau Tsun, Linko, Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C. 0528 ILAC MRA Lab Code: 200102-0 FCC ID: P27-LA10 Report No.: 920408R03A RF Exposure Measurement (Mobile Device) 1. Introduction 2.4GHz frequency band is regarded specially as a dangerous band for its heating harmfulness to the human body. That’s why microwave oven is operating in this frequency band. The manufacturer whose product is working in this frequency band is obligatory to prove the harmfulness of his product. In this document, we try to prove the safety of radiation harmfulness to the human body for our product. The limit for Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) specified in FCC 1.1310 is followed. The Gain of the antenna used in this product is measured in a Fully Anechoic Chamber (FAC), and the maximum total power input to the antenna is measured. Through the Friis transmission formula and the maximum gain of the antenna, we can calculate the distance, away from the product, where the limit of MPE is reached. 2. Classification The antenna of the product, under normal use condition, is at least 20cm away from the body of the user. Warning statement for keeping 20cm separation distance and the prohibition of operating next to a person has been printed on the user’s manual. So, this product is classified as the Mobile Device. 3. RF Exposure Limit According to FCC 1.1310: The criteria listed in the following table shall be used to evaluate the environmental impact of human exposure to radio-frequency (RF) radiation as specified in 1.1307(b). FCC ID: P27-LA10 Report No.: 920408R03A LIMITS FOR MAXIMUM PERMISSIBLE EXPOSURE (MPE) Frequency Range (MHz) Electric Field Strength (V/m) Magnetic Field Strength (A/m) Power Density (mW/cm 2 ) Average Time (minutes) (A)Limits For Occupational / Control Exposures 30-30061.40.1631.06 300-1500......F/3006 1500-100,000......56 (B)Limits For General Population / Uncontrolled Exposure 30-30027.50.0730.230 300-1500......F/150030 1500-100,000......1.030 F = Frequency in MHz 4. Friis Formula Friis transmission formula : Pd = (Pout*G) / (4*pi*r 2 ) where Pd = power density in mW/cm 2 Pout = output power to antenna in mW G = gain of antenna in linear scale Pi = 3.1416 R = distance between observation point and center of the radiator in cm Pd is the limit of MPE, 1 mW/cm 2 . If we know the maximum Gain of the antenna and the total power input to the antenna, through the calculation, we will know the distance r where the MPE limit is reached. Ref. : David K.
