U.S. English 21 Note: When the AutoPIN feature is switched on with the Nokia 31 Configurator software, the PIN code is saved in the terminal’s memory and there is no need to type in the PIN code each time the terminal is powered on. U SE H YPER T ERMINAL TO CHANGE THE PIN CODE Several applications can be used to enter the PIN code into the Nokia 31 terminal. In a Windows environment, one application which can be used to enter the PIN code is HyperTerminal®. To configure and run HyperTerminal:1 From the Windows Taskbar , select Start, Programs, Accessories, Communications, HyperTerminal . Double-click the HyperTrm.exe icon. 2 In the Connection Description page, go to the Name box and type a name for the connection (for example GSM1). Click OK . ' 2002 Nokia Corporation. All rights reserved. 22 3 In the Connect To dialog box, there is a Connect using list. From that drop down list, select Direct to Com X , where "X" is the COM port number where the Nokia 31 terminal is attached. Click OK . 4 In the COM X Properties dialog box, select the Port Settings dialog box and click OK. 5 In the HyperTerminal connection window, type at and press ENTER . If the connection is successful, the program will answer OK . If you do not get an OK response, see “Troubleshooting” on page 37. ' 2002 Nokia Corporation. All rights reserved. U.S. English 23 6 Type in the AT command at+cpin="PIN" where PIN is your PIN code. 7 Press Enter . If you enter the wrong PIN code three times in a row, the code is blocked (for more details, see “Troubleshooting” on page 37). Changing the PIN codeTo protect your SIM card against unauthorized use, it is a good idea to change the PIN code supplied by your service provider. Note: The PIN code request must be set to on before you can change the PIN code using an AT command. For example, to change the PIN code from the HyperTerminal connection window: 1 Type in the following AT commandat+cpwd="sc","OLDPIN", "NEWPIN"where OLDPIN is the old PIN code and NEWPIN the new code. 2 Press Enter . All rights reserved. 24 5 Modem installation for Nokia 31 terminal Modem Setup for Nokia 31 terminal allows you to use the Nokia 31 terminal as a wireless modem for your computer. This modem functionality supports most commercially available data and fax applications as well as Internet browsers and e-mail. The setup installs PC compatible data and fax modem drivers as well as Nokia Modem Options that allows you to set parameters for data calls. Alternatively, you can use the standard modem driver installed with MS Windows.The Nokia 31 Modem Options run with Windows 98/Me/2000/XP or Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 5 or newer.To connect to the Internet, to send and receive e-mail or faxes or to transmit data from your PC, you must have previously installed the appropriate data and fax communications software. G ETTING S TARTED Before you install the Modem Setup for Nokia 31 terminal:• close all the applications currently running in the PC • make sure that the PIN code request in the SIM card is disabled before inserting the SIM card into the terminal. If the PIN request is activated, the PIN code can be entered with an application such as HyperTerminal (see Enter the PIN code, p. 20) • if you want to activate GPRS service, GPRS must be activated in the SIM card used with the Nokia 31 terminal and your local Internet service provider must support GPRS service. U.S. English 25 § M ODEM SETUP You can install the Modem Setup for Nokia 31 terminal from the Nokia 31 CD-ROM or download the latest software from www.americas.forum.nokia.com . 1 From the CD-ROM main menu, click Install Software. 2 Click Install Modem Setup for Nokia 31 GSM Connectivity Terminal. 3 Click Install and fo llow th e instructions on the screen. OR 1 Open the downloaded Modem Setup for Nokia 31 terminal exe-files and save the files in a chosen location 2 Run the Setup . Be prepared to connect your Nokia 31 terminal to the PC when prompted to do so.The Nokia 31 data and fax modem drivers will be installed automatically during the setup. You can change data call settings even when your phone is not connected to the computer. Please refer to the Nokia Modem Options Help for information on how to set these options. ' 2002 Nokia Corporation. All rights reserved. 26 C ONFIGURE N OKIA M ODEM O PTIONS In order to use the Nokia 31 terminal as a wireless modem, Nokia Modem Options must be configured for your PC. These options define the modem to be used, the connection type, GSM connection speed kbits/s and the GPRS access point. For example, to set the Installed Nokia Modems using MS Windows 2000: 1 Go to the Taskbar, Start button and select Settings . Select the Control Panel . 2 In the Control Panel , select Nokia Modem Options . 3 Select Nokia 31 (cable) from the Installed Nokia Modems menu. If you have a CSD connection from your provider, you will be limited to a connection speed of 9.6 or 14.4 kbts/s.If you have a GPRS connection from your Internet service provider, you must specify a GPRS access point for the terminal. This access point is provided by the Internet service provider who provides the SIM card used in the Nokia 31 terminal. 4 When the Nokia Modem Options settings are determined select Apply and then select OK

U.S. English 27 C REATE NEW DIAL - UP CONNECTION After you have installed the modem driver required by your system, you can select the Nokia 31 terminal as your modem and start using it through a communications software application. For example, MS Windows 95/98/2000/NT 4.0 includes communications applications such as Dial-Up Networking and HyperTerminal. For set-up assistance, please refer to the user manuals for the software you are using.When using Dial-Up Networking with Windows 2000, a new dial-up connection must be specified for each type of connection. The following steps apply equally to GPRS or CSD dial-up connections.1 In the Windows Taskbar , go to the Start button and press Settings . 2 Select Control Panel and Network and press Dial-up Connections . 3 Select Make New Connection . 4 In the Welcome to the Network Connection Wizard window, press Next . 5 Select Dial-up to the Internet in the Network Connection Wizard window and press Next . All rights reserved. 28 6 In the Internet Connection Wizard windows, select I want to set up my Internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network (LAN) . Press Next. 7 Select I Connect through a phone line and a modem and press Next. If your PC has more than one modem driver installed, the Choose Modem window will appear. The telephone number for the GPRS connection is provided by your Internet service provider. For more information on this number, please contact your service provider. Leave the Use area code and dialing rules box unchecked. 2 Press Next .

The telephone number for the CSD connection is provided by your Internet service provider. For more information contact your Internet service provider. Be certain to check the Use area code and dialing rules box. 2 Press Next. Enter user name and password 1 Enter your username and password for the Internet access. If you do not have a username and password from your Internet service provider, you may will not be able to connect to the Internet. 2 Press Next. ' 2002 Nokia Corporation. All rights reserved. You should now be able to set up a Internet mail account. All rights reserved. 32 A DDITIONAL SETTINGS I The Nokia 31 terminal requires that you make some additional settings before the dial-up connection process finished. Therefore do not check the box To connect to the Internet immediately, click Finish . Press Finish. S ETTINGS FOR DIAL - UP CONNECTION To finish setting up the modem connection, some additional settings for the Nokia 31 terminal must be defined. These settings apply for both GPRS and CSD connections.1 Go to the Taskbar and select Start , Settings and Control Panel . Select Network and Dial-up Connections . 2 Select the new dial-up connection you created (e.g. Nokia 31) and click on the icon to open

All rights reserved. 34 1 Make certain that the Enable software compression in the PPP Settings window is unchecked . 2 Press OK. 3 Back under the Networking tab, click on the Properties button for I nternet Protocol (TCP/ IP) .I 4 Complete these fields with the information provided by your Internet service provider. 5 Click on the Advanced tab. C ONNECTING TO THE I NTERNET If properly configured, your Nokia 31 GSM Connectivity Terminal should now be ready to make an the Internet connection. Go to the Taskbar and select Start , Settings and Control Panel . Select Network and Dial-up Connections . All rights reserved. 36 2 When you have successfully connected to the Internet, the Connection Complete window will appear into your PC screen. U NINSTALLING M ODEM SETUP FOR N OKIA 31 1 Click the Start button, point to Settings , and click Control Panel . 2 Double-click Add/Remove Programs . 3 In the Install/Uninstall tab, select Modem Setup for Nokia 31 from the list of software that can be removed. 4 Click Add/Remove . 5 Follow the instructions on the screen until the program files are removed. U.S. English 37 6 Troubleshooting If you are experiencing problems with the Nokia 31 terminal, check the following:1 Confirm that the data cable is firmly connected to the Nokia 31 terminal and to the PC (or other compatible device). 2 Confirm that the power supply is firmly connected to the Nokia 31 terminal and to an AC wall outlet. 3 Disconnect the power supply from the AC wall outlet and verify that the SIM card is installed properly. P OOR RECEPTION If there are problems with reception, for example, interruptions in the service, the signal may be too weak. The signal strength is indicated at startup by the LED indicators on the front of the Nokia 31 terminal (see Signal Strength, p. 17).To check the strength using the HyperTerminal application, start the software and enter the AT command sequence: at+csq . The response is +csq: <rssi>, 99 . The parameters for <rssi> are from 0 through 31 at 2 dBm intervals: 0 ... 6 -101 dBm or less -> Unacceptable coverage 7 ... 11 -100 dBm ... -91 dBm -> Weak coverage 12 ... 16 -90 dBm ... -81 dBm -> Moderate coverage ' 2002 Nokia Corporation. All rights reserved. 38 For example, the response +csq: 31, 99 means that the signal strength is excellent. If the signal is weaker than -91 dBm (the <rssi> parameter is 11 or less), move the Nokia 31 terminal to another location. You may need to install an external antenna to improve the reception. (For more information on external antenna installation, please see www. americas.forum.nokia.com .) B LOCKED PIN CODE If you enter the wrong PIN code three times in a row, the code will be blocked (L.E.D. indicators 1 and 2 will blink red). To unblock the PIN code, you must enter your Personal Unblocking Key (PUK) code. Unblock using HyperTerminal applicationTo do this in the HyperTerminal application:1 Type the AT command at+cpin? and press Enter . If the PUK code is required, the response is +cpin: SIM PUK . 2 Enter the PUK code via the command at+cpin=PUK, PIN where PUK is your PUK code and PIN is your old or new PIN code. U.S. English 39 N O CONNECTION If you do not get an OK response when you press Enter in the HyperTerminal connection window, verify that the port settings are correct. Modem driverCheck that no other device uses the same COM port with your PC to which you have connected the Nokia 31 terminal. If you wish to see the log file to check what the Nokia 31 terminal has responded to the AT commands, you can find the file named Modem_Nokia30.txt on your PC in the WINNT or Windows folder. If the log file is not found:1 (In Windows 2000) Select Control Panel > Phone and Modem options > Modems > Nokia 31 > Properties > Diagnostics. 2 In the Logging section, select Append to Log . If you are unable to to create the Internet connection • Check the Nokia Modem Options settings are correct. • Check New Dial-up Connection settings are correct. • Contact your Internet service provider. The suggestions below will help you fulfill your warranty obligations and allow you to enjoy this product for many years.• Keep the terminal and all its parts and accessories out of the reach of small children. • Keep the terminal dry. Precipitation, humidity and all types of liquids or moisture contain minerals that will corrode electronic circuits. • Do not use or store the terminal in dusty, dirty areas. Its moving parts can be damaged. • Do not store the terminal in hot areas. High temperatures can shorten the life of electronic devices, damage batteries, and warp or melt certain plastics. • Do not store the terminal in cold areas. Please provide a label with the number on the label. 2 This is also a Computer peripheral device connected to a computer. As such, it is subject to the label requirements of Part 15. The device also appears to be large enough to accommodate the two-condition statement required by 15.19 on the device. Please provide the appropriate label containing all necessary information in accordance with 15.19(a)(3) and 2.925. 3 The Part 22 section of test report is incorrect. Part 22 test data for the 800MHz lists paragraphs of Part 24 as the test sections (see starting page 65 of report). Please correct the report to reflect the proper CFR 47 Parts and the proper test sections. 4 The manual and report mentions the use of an external antenna. The device does not appear to have been tested with this option, but only with the internal antenna (see setup photos). It is not apparent if this external antenna has a higher gain than the internal antenna or not. Please provide test data for this external antenna type. This includes RF exposure calculations if the external gain is higher than the internal antenna gain specified. Users are notified that in order to fulfill FCC RF exposure limits, an external antenna with no more tha 3dBi gain may be attached into this device. RF performance was measured also conducted to prove compliance when external antenna is used. In this sense this should not differ too much from conventional cellular phone with an external antenna connector. 5. The FCC requires that separate test setup photos be provided at the time of grant and data upload. Please provide a separate exhibit showing the test setup photos by themselves. Done. 6.
