The Model LEA-3-WATT transmitter is a high performance video transmitter designed specifically for Law Enforcement Agencies. Application The Model LEA-3-WATT video transmitter is specifically designed for the broadcast of standard NTSC signals to be received and processed by a broadcast video receiver, providing a wireless link for closed circuit television systems. The output power of the transmitter is almost 3 Watts. This transmitter has been designated for mobile applications. This transmitter is type accepted for licensed use under FCC rules Part 90 for use in the 2450 to 2483.5 MHz frequency band. This transmitter has a fixed transmit frequency of 2470 MHz. Intended users include state and local agencies of law enforcement, fire departments or other public safety organizations or agencies. This equipment is EMI/RFI sealed and is intended to be dust, water and weather resistant under normal environmental and operating conditions. Any attempt to open the unit or to expose the internal components, by other than a manufact ures aut horized technician, will violate the integrity of the sealing system and will invalidate the warranty. Cautions A suitable 50-Ohm antenna or load should be connected to the RF output of the transmitter before applying DC input power. Do not apply more than 14 VDC on the input power. Installation Ideally, the transmitter should be located such that the space between the transmit and receive antennas is unobstructed. Physical, man-made and environmental structures or topographical features between the antenna will absorb or reflect transmitted signals; reducing or limiting t he transmit range. Metal or metalized material in the antenna wave pattern will cause signals to be reflected. Other structural and physical obstructions, i.e., concrete, glass, trees, etc. will cause the transmitted signals to be attenuated by absorption to some degree. Even though the transmitter is sealed and is water resistant it is not intended to be installed outdoors. This transmitter has been designated for mobile applications. Do not place the transmitter antenna in close proximity to another transmitting antenna. Operation The transmitter is provided with a 0 dBi dipole antenna connected to the external antenna connector. For other antenna options please contact Gamut Electronics LLC. Users Manual Users ManualUsers Manual Users Manual 5 Apply DC power to the transmitter using a battery or power supply. The transmitter has been deigned to operate from +12 VDC ± 15%. When operated at +12 VDC, input current is about 1.5 Amp. Power sources should be stable, regulated and be capable of supplying slightly more than the required current. When connecting to a battery, the red alligator clip is positive (+) and the black alligator clip is negative (-). The NTSC 1 V p-p video output of the camera is connected to the BNC (female) video input of the transmitter via standard 75-Ohm coaxial cable such as RG-59. Long lengths (>50 fee…

This makes the antenna ideal for use with hand held products or products with no substantial metal groundplane. They can even be used with products containing all plastic chassis or case. The 2.5 dB gain antenna also compensates for typical system losses that occur at these frequencies. Connector styles available include male TNC or SMA. Right angle connector models are available for side mounting applications. The PSTN series uses a flexible PVC cover, and the HSTN series uses a stylized hard ABS radome. Special connectors are available, please consult factory. The quarterwave antenna for 2.4 GHz provides en- hanced performance with the minimum of size. It uses a hard ABS radome and is colored in black with a textured finish. The antenna is fitted with a 6-32 thread, but can be outfitted with other thread sizes (minimum quantities apply). The ferrule provides the maximum economy for the antenna as well as the interface needed on the wireless product. A one time factory matching is recom- mended for wireless devices with little ground plane. Frequency Stability Calculation A digital phase-lock loop (PLL) provides the frequency stability of the transmitter. The PLL consists of a high-stability crystal reference oscillator, a digital synt hesizer, a voltage controlled oscillator and a passive loop filter. The frequency synthesizer used for this transmitter is a Zarlink 2.7 GHz SP5655S synthesizer. The frequency synthesizer includes a phase detector, current mode charge pump, and programmable frequency dividers. The reference oscillator for the synthesizer is a 4.0000 MHz crystal oscillator. The frequency tolerance is ± 30 ppm. The frequency temperature characteristic is ± 50 ppm over a temperature range of -40° C to +85° C. The reference oscillator provides the main error factor in the frequency stability of the transmitter over temperature. The transmitter is specified for a maximum drift of ±0.010% over temperature. This calculates to a maximum of ±0.247 MHz deviation of the carrier. Using a worst case of ± 80 ppm frequency drift in the reference oscillator, this calculates to an error of only ±0.197 MHz in offset. An analysis of the PLL design is provided using the GENESYS PLL ver. 6.0 simulation program by Eagleware Corporation. The synthesizer divides the 4.00 MHz reference frequency by 512 for an internal reference frequency of 7812.5 Hz. The synthesizer first divides the VCO frequency by 16 then by 19,760 for a total division of 316,160. Dividing 2470 MHz by 316,160 equals 7812.5 Hz. The phase detector in the synthesizer generates a phase error signal that the charge pump uses to correct the VCO for any errors in frequency. The analysis by the GENESYS PLL software calculates an error of only 1.94564 Hz RMS in frequency. This calculation does not take into account the stability of the reference oscillator. This demonstrates that the reference oscillator will generate the most significant error since the synthesizer generates less than a 2.0 Hz error. Based on these calculations the transmitter will provide excellent frequency stability over temperature.
