Blount Voice Activated Target Launcher Theory of Operation September, 12, 2000 Charlie Ketelhohn Milwaukee Electronics Overview: The voice activated launcher consists of a transmitter, receiver, and a remote push button this is called a set. Each gun club may have multiple sets, therefore, each set must have a unique ID. Sixteen IDs have been incorporated for this purpose. The purpose of this device is to provide a “hands free” means to release clay pigeons for trap leagues. Up to five transmitters may be used with a single receiver and remote push button. Each transmitter “listens” for a “PULL” command and transmits a trigger to the receive unit. The receive unit then decodes the trigger command and closes a relay contact which is used to trigger the launcher. The remote push button may be used to trigger the launcher as well as enabling or disabling the RF triggers. Transmitter: The transmitter will be placed near the shooter with a microphone placed to receive the shooters voice. The shooter will say “PULL” or some other word to trigger the device. Men, women, or children must be able to produce a valid call. When a valid call has been detected, a 418MHz trigger signal is transmitted to the receiver. The transmitter must be able to reject background conversation, gun action sounds, gun fire, PA announcements, and adjacent shooter’s calls. The selection of a valid call signal is performed by analog circuitry as well as signal processing in the software. The response time of the unit must be quick and consistent to avoid what shooters call a “Slow Pull” condition. False triggers are more acceptable than slow triggers, but both problems should be avoided. Receiver: The receiver unit uses the remote push button as its input for a state machine. If the remote push button switch is ON, then RF triggers will be accepted as long as the switch is active or until the RF triggers have a gap of about two and a half minutes. At that point the receiver will ignore all RF triggers and look to the remote push button for a state change. The RF triggers may be reactivated by a toggling of the ON/OFF switch or by depression of the PULL button ( if the switch is in the ON position, also a target will be released ). If the ON/OFF switch is in the OFF position, no RF triggers will be accepted. If the PULL button is pressed, the receiver will release a target regardless of the ON/OFF position. When a trigger has been accepted from either a RF signal or depression of the PULL button, no triggers will be allowed for about two seconds. This is called a refractory period which allows the launcher to mechanically get prepared for another launch.

It combines excellent performance and cost-effectiveness into an antenna package that can be integrated, even by designers lacking RF test equipment. Despite its simplicity and ease of use the “Splatch” should not be thought of as “just any other part”. Its correct function is critical to the performance of your overall device. Dropping the “Splatch” in the center of your board like any popcorn IC will likely yield dismal results. Castellations have been provided to ease solder introduction during hand assembly. The parts are also fully compatible with the reflow process for automated assembly. APPLICATION CONSIDERATIONS When implemented correctly the “Splatch”will yield outstanding and repeat- able results. However, the “Splatch”was designed with very specific feed and mounting requirements. Failure by the designer to respect these require- ments will result in unsatisfactory performance. * The antenna is tuned for direct mounting to a product’s PCB. Mounting the antenna in any other manner will produce poor results. * The antenna should be fed with a trace <=.25". Longer runs or coax feeds are not recommended. * Nothing should be placed under or directly beside the antenna element. Generally, mounting the antenna at the front of a product as illustrated will yield the best results. LAYOUT CONSIDERATIONS Improper placement of planes, traces or components will result in antenna nulls or complete detuning. First, the area under the antenna on all board layers should be completely free of components, traces, or groundplane. In addition, no components or traces should pass within .25" of the top, sides, front or back of the antenna. Ideally the antenna will be mounted at the top of the board and given an unobstructed field of view in all directions. Components placed in the area below the back edge of the antenna will have little effect since the antenna has a null at its back edge when referenced appropriately to groundplane. Components placed to the sides or top of the antenna or items such as displays mounted in proximity to the antenna will produce nulls and, possibly, detuning. The antenna may be referenced to groundplanes of all different surface areas; however, it has been optimized for a 1.5"x 3" plane area. The best performance and lowest VSWR will be obtained when referenced to a plane of similar area. The recommended pad layout is illustrated below. The top layer of the board generally has the antenna mounting pads and feed trace. The ground pads are connected to the groundplane layer through vias. Use care in the sizing and placement of the vias to prevent solder migration from the attachment pads during attachment. Pads and outline shown for groundplane position reference only. Top Layer Bottom Layer Vias To Groundplane 0.100" 0.090" FEED CONSIDERATIONS Like most reduced-size antennas the “Splatch”has a fairly high Q and thus exhibits narrow bandwidth characteristics. The single most critical element in insuring the optimum function of the “Splatch”is to minimize the length of the feed trace (Transmission Line) to the “Splatch”itself. The feed trace should be less than .25" and in all cases microstripped. The term “Microstrip”refers to a trace passed over groundplane of a width appropriate to create a 50-ohm transmission line between the module and the antenna. Since the antenna does not present a true and stable 50-ohm match, the feed trace tends to lower the antenna’s resonant frequency. Given the antenna’s narrow bandwidth, it can easily be detuned by the length of the feed trace; thus, the trace should be kept as short as possible. B) Use a Spectrum Analyzer and Signal Generator to sweep the anten- na and find the frequency of highest output. *NOTE* A characterized or calibrated antenna must be used on the Spec- trum Analyzer in order for meaningful results to be obtained. The Wireless Voice Release was tested and found to Meet the radiated emission specification of Title 47 CFR FCC, part 15, subpart C for an intentional radiator. Product Description: The Wireless Voice Release system consists of a fixed frequency, remote control transmitter, which sends a short digital burst to a receiver located at a trap shoot location. The transmitter is voice activated, and will send the coded burst, when the trap shooter yells “pull”. Compliance, Inc LSC-Sunbeam Products 300246 Page 8 of 27 1.5 Introduction On October 30 th and 31 st , 2000, a series of Radiated Emissions tests were performed on one test sample model of the All-American Voice Release. This product operates by a means of a short burst of data transmission containing an I. D. code. These tests were performed using the test procedure outlined in ANSI C63.4, 1992 for intentional radiators, and in accordance with the limits set forth in FCC Part 15. 231e, for a periodic transmitter. These tests were performed by Kenneth L. Boston, EMC Engineer of L.S. Compliance, Inc. 1.6 Purpose The above mentioned tests were performed in order to determine the compliance of the Test Sample with limits contained in various provisions of Title 47 CFR, FCC Part 15, including: 15.205, 15.209, 15.231b and 15.231c. All radiated emissions tests were performed to measure the emissions in the frequency bands described by the above sections, and to determine whether said emissions are below the limits established by the above sections. These tests were performed in accordance with the procedures described in the American National Standard for methods of measurement of Radio-Noise Emissions from Low-Voltage Electrical and Electronic Equipment in the Range of 9 kHz to 40 GHz, (ANSI C63.4-1992). Compliance in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. The test sample was placed on an 80cm high wooden pedestal, which was centered on the flush mounted 2m diameter metal turntable. The test sample was operated in a normal manner, with all functions being exercised. The test sample was operated on its own [new] internal battery, consisting of a 9 volt alkaline battery. The test sample was configured to run in a continuous transmit mode during the 15.231b measurements. One sample was modified to transmit a typical data packet repeatedly for tests of the fundamental and spurious/harmonic emissions.
