MODEL: DS-O4 INSTRUCTION MANUAL Di.c;cove~ Kids - 2-Way Radio ImtruClion Manual: (for bottom of 1st page with illustration) To have the most fun with YOUT 2-Way Radio, you'll want to take a look at this manual pretty carefully. Intro: Exploring your world has just gotten even more exciting now that you have the Discovery KidsTM 2-Way Radio. You can carry it almost anywhere, and all you have to do is get your frequencies set and you'll be able to talk with anyone else who has a 2-Way Radio. FCC NOTICE: - . This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable prote<:tion against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio fi"equency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause hanDful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures: . . . . Batteries Your 2-Way Radio is powered by four (4) AAA AJkaline batteries. To install the batteries, lift the spring- action hook on the back of the Radio to find a coin-screw that can be loosened by turning counter- clockwise. You will then be able to slide out the battery compartment cover and insert the 4 AAA batteries. Line up your batteries by polarity similar to the diagram below. Return the compartment cover by sliding it back in place and turn the coin-screw clockwise to tighten. Tumini ):our 2-Way Radio Off Press and hold the Discovery Kids Power button until the display clears and you hear a tone. 3 C Adjustina Volume on Xour 2-Wax Radio In the NOM mode, press the UP (8) or DOWN (C) button to adjust the volume. A beep will be heard each time the button is pressed. If you hold the UP (B) or DOWN (C) button down, the volume will change automatically and you won't hear the beeps. Release the button when you are happy with the volume. D Settina the Channel Number on your 2-Wav Radio In the NOM, press the MODE (A) button once, and the CHANNEL icon will begin to flash to indicate that the radio is in channel setting mode. Press the UP (B) or DOWN (C) button to select a new channel. There are 14 channels to choose from (1-14), but both radios must be on the same channel in order to communicate. Select your channel and press the Push-To- Talk (pTT) button to confirm your new channel. Your radio will always return to NOM if you don't press any button within J 0 seconds. E S~ini the Private Conversation Code on )!our 2-Wa)! Radio Private Conversation Codes will allow you to use your 2-Way Radio without being interrupted by other radios in the area. For this to work properly, the Code that your radio is set to must be given to the friends that you want to communicate with, and all radios must be set to the same Private Conversation Code in order to work. Operational Description

Technical Description for DS04 Introduction This product is a FRS transceiver that operates on the 14 channels in the 462.5625-467.7125MHz band. Half-duplex operation is designed. When power is applied the set will be in the receive mode. Transmission is enabled by pressing the PTT (push-to-talk) key. IF AMP & DEMOD 1 st mixer Low noise AMP ANTENNA SW RF PA DRIVER DE-EMP PLL FREQUNCY SYNTHEIZER MICROCON TROLLER LCD KEY BOARD PRE-EMP PRE AMP POWER SUPPLY As is evident in the above block diagram, this product employs dual-conversion superhet architecture for itsreceiver. The first IF (Intermediate Frequency) is 21.4MHz. The second IF is 450kHz. The local oscillator signal is PLL-synthesized to ensure accuracy and stability. A microcontroller with appropriate firmware is designed toprogram the PLL to the desirable user-selected channel for either transmit or receive. Circuit Description Receive mode The antenna is connected to the low noise amplifier Q14 via the T/R switch formed by D8 and D7, L1, C69 and C70. During reception (RX), D7 and D8 are off. The incoming RF signal is routed to Q14 via the pi-network formed by L1, C69 and C70. The amplified RF signal is coupled to the first mixer Q15. The first local oscillator signal is PLL-synthesized. Q18 is the VCO which is tuned by the filtered error voltage from the PLL chip U5. Channel selection is accomplished by sending appropriate data to U5 via a 3-wire serial bus. This is taken care of by microcontroller U1. The 21.4MHz crystal filter at the mixer output selects the desirable IF signal while rejecting other mixing products. The first IF signal is amplified by Q16 and then passed to U6 which contains the second mixer/local oscillator, IF amplifier/limiter and quadrature FM demodulator. The demodulated FM signal is filtered by the deemphasis network and low-pass filter formed by R1,R2,C25 and an internal OP-AMP in U7. The filtered audio signal is then routed to the power amplifier (U4) which drives the loudspeaker.
