CPE-25(x) Series OEM INSTALLERS Q UICK START GUIDE AIRRUNNER CPE Preface The CPE-2(x) series modular 802.11b wireless radio solution was designed to meet the growing needs of The ISP, System Integrator and other professional developers. The CPE-2(x) series product is intended for long distance point to point communications over the wireless medium. This manual will demonstrate how the equipment is to be used in a safe an lawful manner. ** IMPORTANT ** The installation of the PCMCIA module into an enclosure requires that the integrator label the outside of the enclosure with the FCC ID printed on the module. Changes or modifications not expressly approved by Zcomax Technologies, Inc. may void the user’s authority to operate the equipment. “Note: This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates uses and can radiate frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful interference in which case the user will be required to correct the interference at his own expense”. ƒ HEAT o The product should be situated away from heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other appliances (including amplifiers) that produce heat. ƒ OUTDOOR ANTENNA GROUNDING o Be sure the product is grounded so as to provide some protection against voltage surges and built up static charges. o Section 810 of the National Electrical Code (NEC), ANSI/NFPA No. 70-1990, provides information with respect to proper grounding of the mast and supporting structure, grounding of the lead-in wire to an antenna-discharge unit, size of grounding conductors, location of antenna-discharge unit, connection to ground electrodes, and requirements for the grounding electrode. o Note to Installer: This reminder is provided to call the installer’s attention to article 820-40 of the NEC that provide guidelines for proper grounding and in particular, specifies that the cable ground should be connected to the grounding system of the building, as close to the point of cable entry as practical. ƒ DAMAGE REQUIRING SERVICE o This product should be serviced by qualified service personnel when: ƒ The power supply cord or plug has been damaged, or ƒ An object or liquid has entered into the product, or ƒ The product does not operate normally or exhibits a marked changed in performance, or ƒ The product has been dropped, or the enclosure has been damaged. This product should only be installed by a qualified professional. Components of CPE: o Single board computer (SBC) – The SBC is a ARM PCMCIA Platform that is used to interface with the RF PC Card. It is used to control the PCMCIA firmware as well as Convert all Ethernet 802.3 packets to wireless 802.11b, using the PCMCIA Card. o Wireless RF card – The PCMCIA card is an 802.11b wireless radio module that is used to transmit all data intended for the link it is attached to. o Antenna – The PCB panel antenna is tuned for the 2.4 – 2.8 frequency range. It comes in two sizes, 15dBi and an 18dBi. The antenna selection is used to determine the out power needed to establish a reliable connection. Configuration: Connections o The PCMCIA Card is inserted into SBC, The PCMCIA rails are keyed so as to avert a wrong insertion method. o The Antenna feed line is terminated with an MMCX reverse polarity plug that is used to connect to the PCMCIA’s primary antenna jack (Jack closets to the PCMCIA’s LEDs. Mounting o The antenna can be mounted with the use four predrilled mounting holes to assure it will be firmly held in place o The SBC has four mounting holes that are grounded to the main electrical ground of the SBC. o The POE splitter has pre drilled mounting holes that allow it to be firmly held in place Cable connections o The 6” Category 5 patch cable is used to connect to the SBC’s ethernet jack and the POE splitters Etherent jack. o The DC power cord is used to connect the DC splitter board (main power feed) to the SBC’s dc jack. o The main Ethernet feed line can now be connected to the input Ethernet jack located on the POE splitter and connected to the DC injector box, once in place the compression fitting cap can be tightened. o The 6’ Category 5 patch cable can now be connected to the main Ethernet connector located on the desired device. o The device is now connected and ready to go. 1. Snyder I have a few comments on this Application. 1. Please note that the EUT is a PCMCIA card with external antenna connection. The manual does not appear to be for this device (please see ‘mounting’ instructions in manual). Please provide the manual for this PCMCIA card. 2. Please explain how the professional installation approach for this PCMCIA card is controlled by the manufacturer. 3. Please note that the module request letter states that the device was tested in stand alone configuration. Please note that this is not how the device was tested as it was tested in the PCMCIA slot of a lap top computer and not on an extender card as stated whereby the card is fully exposed (see setup photos). Please also note that PCMCIA cards are a special form of module approval and generally do not need the modular request letter. Please explain. 4. Please note that the FCC ID number of the device this PCMCIA card is based upon was granted for use in a specified host (i.e. a limited modular approval). Please explain how this previous device applies to this application. 5. Please note that plots 4-19 and 4-20 you show a signal around 2.38GHz that appears to be right at or over the limit of 54dB. Please explain what this signal is and if it is produced by the EUT please show how this is compliant to the restricted band limits. 6. Please note that it does not appear as if you listed the gain of the antenna used during radiated spurious emissions testing. Please specify which antenna goes with which test data. 7. Please note that there is no apparent indication that the antennae used are point to point or not. Consequently, when the EIRP exceeds 36dBm the power delivered to the antenna terminal must be reduced as specified in 15.247. If these antennae are point to point, please clearly specify this in the data and in the manual. Please explain how the system addresses 15.247b4. 8. Please note that the MPE report states that the calculation distance is 20cm, however, the actual distance used in the formula is 200cm. Please note that the required separation distance for this device is 34.71cm. Please correct the calculations. RF Exposure Test Report Document 7973-MPE, Rev. 1 FCC ID: RWQ-CPE2 RF Exposure Test Report Washington Laboratories, Ltd April, 2004 1 Maximum Permissible Exposure Test Report for FCC ID: RWQ-CPE2 1.0 Introduction This report has been prepared on behalf of ZCOMAX Model: CPE2 PCMCIA MODULE. Transmitter to show compliance with the RF exposure requirements as defined in FCC §1.1307. 1.1 Requirements Three different categories of transmitters are defined by the FCC in OET Bulletin 65. These categories are fixed installation, mobile, and portable and are defined as follows: ƒ Fixed Installations: fixed location means that the device, including its antenna, is physically secured at a permanent location and is not able to be easily moved to another location. Additionally, distance to humans from the antenna is maintained to at least 2 meters. ƒ Mobile Devices: a mobile device is defined as a transmitting device designed to be used in other than fixed locations and to be generally used in such a way that a separation distance of at least 20 centimeters is normally maintained between the transmitter's radiating structures and the body of the user or nearby persons. Transmitters designed to be used by consumers or workers that can be easily re-located, such as a wireless modem operating in a laptop computer, are considered mobile devices if they meet the 20 centimeter separation requirement. The FCC rules for evaluating mobile devices for RF compliance are found in 47 CFR §2.1091. ƒ Portable Devices: a portable device is defined as a transmitting device designed to be used so that the radiating structure(s) of the device is/are within 20 centimeters of the body of the user. Portable device requirements are found in Section 2.1093 of the FCC's Rules (47 CFR§2.1093). For this test report the ZCOMAX PCMCIA module with 18dBi antenna is classified as a “Fixed Device” as the antenna design is such that would be mounted on a pole or away from nearby personnel. However, as this is being approved as a modular approval the MPE will be evaluated at the 20cm test distance. The FCC also categorizes the use of the device as based upon the user’s awareness and ability to exercise control over his or her exposure. The two categories defined are Occupational/ Document 7973-MPE, Rev. 1 FCC ID: RWQ-CPE2 RF Exposure Test Report Washington Laboratories, Ltd April, 2004 2 Controlled Exposure and General Population/Uncontrolled Exposure. These two categories are defined as follows: ƒ Occupational/Controlled Exposure: In general, occupational/controlled exposure limits are applicable to situations in which persons are exposed as a consequence of their employment, who have been made fully aware of the potential for exposure and can exercise control over their exposure. This exposure category is also applicable when the exposure is of a transient nature due to incidental passage through a location where the exposure levels may be higher than the general population/uncontrolled limits, but the exposed person is fully aware of the potential for exposure and can exercise control over his or her exposure by leaving the area or by some other appropriate means. Awareness of the potential for RF exposure in a workplace or similar environment can be provided through specific training as part of a RF safety program. If appropriate, warning signs and labels can also be used to establish such awareness by providing prominent information on the risk of potential exposure and instructions on methods to minimize such exposure risks. ƒ General Population/Uncontrolled Exposure: The general population / uncontrolled exposure limits are applicable to situations in which the general public may be exposed or in which persons who are exposed as a consequence of their employment may not be made fully aware of the potential for exposure or cannot exercise control over their exposure. Members of the general public would come under this category when exposure is not employment-related; for example, in the case of a wireless transmitter that exposes persons in its vicinity. Warning labels placed on low-power consumer devices such as cellular telephones are not considered sufficient to allow the device to be considered under the occupational/controlled category, and the general population/uncontrolled exposure limits apply to these devices. Since there are no warnings or training associated with this unit and it can be used by anyone, the ZCOMAX PCMCIA MODULE is evaluated to the General Population/Uncontrolled Exposure limits. 1.2 Radio Frequency Radiation Exposure Evaluation The highest RF output power of the unit was measured at 23.8 dBm at 2412 MHz. According to §1.1310 of the FCC rules, the power density limit for General Population/Uncontrolled Exposure is 1mW/cm 2 . As this is a modular approval for use with a fixed installation device the MPE shall be calculated at 20cm to show compliance with the power density limit.
