Operational Description

© Commtech Wireless 2006 PT5 OEM Users Manual 2. Description of Operation The design of the PT5 Voice and Data Transmitter has been achieved on one PCB that incorporates all circuitry consisting of the following sections. The Processor U1 controls all RF circuitry features and provides a means to configure the transmitter and controls the functions of the external interface, PLL, Power Amplifier gain and DAC U5. The Transmitter unit maybe connected a PC, laptop or any RS-232 terminal, to display the menus and control operation, the Processor U1 contains a UART which provides this capability. Dip switches connected to U1 enable selection of channel without reprogramming. RF signal generation is provided by a VCO controlled by PLL U8 in conjunction with a VCTCXO that is trimmed by Processor control and modulated by analog means via DAC U5 and amplifier U2A. The modulated signal is amplified by gain blocks under control of the Processor via the DAC and is passed thru harmonic filters to the Antenna connection. Additional function of the Processor U1 provides monitoring of internal functions including PLL lock and the externally provided power supply voltage, ensuring correct device operation within the limits of the intended operating conditions. An externally visible led provides indication to end users of the functional status of the transmitter.

© Commtech Wireless 2006 PT5 OEM Users Manual 1. ALIGNMENT The alignment features of the PT5 are all accessible through the configuration menu. The following procedures assume the transmitter is a working module connected with an appropriate power supply and modulation source, with the RF output connected to suitable test equipment capable of accurately measuring conducted RF power, deviation and frequency. To enter the alignment programming menu: 1. Connect the transmitter via an RS232 cable to a PC running a terminal program with the PC serial port set to 19200,8,n,1 2. In the PC terminal program type “factory” and press enter, then enter password the password protected factory menu should appear. 3. Type “D” to enter the diagnostics menu, then type “+” to enter the factory menu. 1.1. Power adjustment When in the factory main menu 1. select option 1,2 or 3 in the menu, this activates the transmitter so the output power can be measured. 2. Use the “+” and “-“ keys to adjust deviation value for the chosen parameter 3. Use the “Esc” key to return to the factory menu. The power level used during transmission is selected in the Radio Characteristics menu. 1.2. Deviation adjustment When in the factory main menu and with a modulation source applied. 1. select option A to enter the Audio/Data Control Menu. 2. Select the menu item appropriate to the mode of operation. 3. Select the menu item appropriate to the deviation parameter to be adjusted 4. Use the “+” and “-“ keys to adjust deviation value for the chosen parameter 5. Use the “Esc” key to return to the factory menu. 1.3. Frequency offset Adjustment When in the factory main menu and with NO modulation source applied. 6. Select option A to enter the Audio/Data Control Menu. 7. Select option X to enter VCTCXO center frequency adjustment, this activates the transmitter so the frequency offset can be measured 8. Use the “+” and “-“ keys to adjust the offset value 9. Use the “Esc” key to return to the factory menu.

RF Exposure Info

§1.1310 and §2.1091 - RF EXPOSURE According to §1.1307, systems operating under the provisions of this section shall be operated in a manner that ensures that the public is not exposed to radio frequency energy level in excess of the Commission’s guidelines. According to §1.1310 and §2.1091 RF exposure is calculated.
