Quick Start Guide Touchstone® SBG6700-AC Wireless Cable Modem Gateway Place Label Here LED Status In the Box SBG6700-AC Wireless Cable Modem Gateway Power Supply Ethernet Cable Software License & Warranty Card Quick Start Guide What You Should Know ON - Power is properly connected ON - Downstream channel is connected ON - Upstream channel is connected ON - Gateway is connected to the network FLASH - 2.4 GHz wireless connection between the gateway and a Wi-Fi enabled device During normal operation, the Power, Receive, Send, and Online LEDs on the SBG6700-AC front panel should always be lit SOLID green or blue. Note: During startup, the first four LEDs will FLASH and then light up SOLID in sequential order. If the Power LED does not light, please first check the gateway power connection before contacting ARRIS. If the other LEDs do not light up correctly, please contact your service provider for assistance. The gateway label is located on the bottom of the SBG6700-AC Gateway. To receive high-speed Internet service, your service provider may request the Media Access Control (MAC) address (see HFC MAC ID) and serial number (see S/N) located on the gateway label. IMPORTANT! During the installation or gateway activation, you may need to contact your service provider for assistance. The SBG6700-AC connects to the existing coaxial cable connection in your home and does not require any new wiring. This quick start guide will help you install the SBG6700-AC Wireless Gateway and set up a secure wireless network connection. To customize your wireless network configurations and other advanced gateway settings, see the SBG6700-AC User Guide which is available online at the ARRIS Support website, www.arrisi.com/consumer. FAQs and additional product documentation are also available. Set Up a Wireless Network Connection Choose one of the following two options to set up your wireless network connection. When done, continue with “Test Your Wireless Network Connection.” • Computer Wireless Network Options • WPS Pairing Button Gateway Label Front Panel LEDs 3 Use the WPS Pairing Button B To use WPS, your computer must support WPS and also have WPA security compatibility. The WPS option automatically assigns a random SSID wireless network name and Wi-Fi Security Key to connect the SBG6700-AC and other WPS-enabled devices to your wireless network. 1. Power ON the SBG6700-AC and other WPS-enabled devices that you want to connect to your wireless network. 2. Press the WPS button located on the top of the SBG6700-AC. 3. Press and hold the WPS button on your WPS-enabled computer or other device for five or more seconds, then release. 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each additional WPS-enabled device. 1. Connect the coaxial cable to the cable wall outlet or RF splitter (optional) and the Cable connector on the SBG6700-AC. Use your hand to tighten each connector. 2. Connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on your computer and an Ethernet port on the SBG6700-AC. 3. Connect the power cord to the Power port on the SBG6700-AC and then plug it into an electrical wall outlet. This automatically powers ON the SBG6700-AC. Check the front panel LEDs. During the initial startup, the Power, Receive, Send, and Online LEDs on the SBG6700-AC will FLASH. Afterwards, check that all four LEDs are lit SOLID. The Wireless LEDs will light up only when wiresless devices are connected. See Front Panel LEDs on page 4 for more information. 1. Power ON your computer and log in. 2. Contact your service provider to activate (provision) the SBG6700-AC. Note: Your service provider may allow for automatic activation which will automatically launch a special website when you open a web browser. 3. Open a web browser on your computer, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, or Safari. 4. Type a valid URL (for example, www. arris.com) in the address bar and then click or press Enter. The ARRIS website should open. If the web page did not open, please contact your service provider for assistance. Note: The steps for setting up a wireless network may differ slightly depending on the operating system installed on your computer. The followng steps apply to Windows ® 7. 1. From the Windows taskbar, click the following in sequential order: • Start button • Control Panel • Network and Sharing Center • Set up a new connection or network • Manually connect to a wireless network The Wireless Network Connection window should open. 2. Type the ARRIS wireless network name or a different name to identify your wireless network in the Network name field. For the ARRIS network name, see SSID number listed on the gateway label. 3. Select the network security type from the Security type drop-down list. 4. Select the Encryption type from the drop-down list. 5. Type your wireless network password in the Security Key field. The SBG6700-AC connects to the existing coaxial cable connection in your home and does not require any new wiring. This quick start guide will help you install the SBG6700-AC gateway and set up a secure wireless network connection. To take advantage of the 802.11ac wireless performance or beamforming capabilities, your wireless connected devices must also support 802.11ac. For optimal performance with 802.11ac, you should connect any wireless devices using older protocols to the 2.4 GHz wireless network (not the 802.11ac 5 GHz network). To customize your wireless network connection and other advanced gateway settings, see the SURFboard SBG6700‑AC User Guide for more information. It is available online at the ARRIS Support website: www.arrisi.com/consumer. FAQs and additional product documentation are also available on the support website. Recommended that you change the network name or add additional wireless networks. • WI-FI SECURITY KEY - Needed to access a wireless network using a secure gateway. Recommended that you change the network name which is needed to add additional wireless devices to your wireless network. • S/N - Gateway serial number. Your service provider may require this number to activate your gateway. • HFC MAC ID - Your service provider may require the Media Access Control (MAC) number to activate your gateway. Software License, Warranty, Safety, and Regulatory Information Wireless Gateway-SBG6700-AC 1 Safety and Regulatory Information IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS Read This Before You Begin — When using your equipment, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and injury to persons, including the following: • Read all of the instructions listed here and/or in the user manual before you operate this device. Give particular attention to all safety precautions. Retain the instructions for future reference. • This device must be installed and used in strict accordance with manufacturer’s instructions, as described in the user documentation that is included with the device. • Comply with all warning and caution statements in the instructions. Observe all warning and caution symbols that are affixed to this device. • To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose this device to rain or moisture. The device must not be exposed to dripping or splashing. Do not place objects filled with liquids, such as vases, on the device. • This device was qualified under test conditions that included the use of the supplied cables between system components. To ensure regulatory and safety compliance, use only the provided power and interface cables and install them properly. • Different types of cord sets may be used for connections to the main POWER supply circuit. This is to avoid damaging the device by local lightning strikes and other electrical surges. • Postpone installation until there is no risk of thunderstorm or lightning activity in the area. • Do not use this product near water: for example, near a bathtub, washbowl, kitchen sink or laundry tub, in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool. • Do not cover the device or block the airflow to the device with any other objects. Keep the device away from excessive heat and humidity and keep the device free from vibration and dust. • Wipe the device with a clean, dry cloth. Never use cleaning fluid or similar chemicals. Do not spray cleaners directly on the device or use forced air to remove dust. • For added protection, unplug the device from the wall outlet and disconnect the cables to avoid damage to this device due to lightning and power surges. • Upon completion of any service or repairs to this device, ask the service technician to perform safety checks to determine that the device is in safe operating condition. • Do not open the device.
