This RF Module can be mounted to the end product by direct soldering. 2. Please follow the pin assignment and dimension of RF module for the end product design. 3. The thick and short PCB trace for VDD and GND should be made. 4. Decoupling capacitor is recommended to place next to the VDD pin. 5. Make sure there are no metallic objects placed on to or below the RF module after it is installed. TFE: Ken 7 6. Only one antenna should be used when the RF module installed, either trace antenna or external antenna. 7. Each antenna has relative capacitor to be populated, C12 is for external antenna and the C11 is for trace antenna. 8. Make sure that the specified supply voltage is not exceeded. 9. Make sure that the power supply is clean from noise and ripple. 10. Unused pins should be disconnected. 11. The RF module is self-sufficient to function without the need of external components. 12. One type specified external antenna was provided. Other type of external antenna shall not be used. Important notes: Please note that the module is only approved for use when installed in devices produced by a specific manufacturer for professional installation. 8. Operational Description

TFE Hong Kong Limited Issued by: Ken 1 TFERFM915 RF Module Circuit Description RF module ‘TFERFM915’ is a 900 MHz RF transceiver. The communication between transmitter and receiver is based on direct sequence spread spectrum with different modulation scheme (BPSK & OQPSK) and spreading code. The operation of RF chip and user data can be handled by the on board microcontroller. The transmit power can be set up to 10mW by software setting. The microcontroller’s I/O can be assigned by application software. It can be used as LED drive pin, signal I/O pin etc. This RF module schematic is divided into 3 parts, an Antenna circuit, RF Chip circuit and Microcontroller circuit. See Figure 1. Antenna Circuit Either an on board antenna (ANT1) or external antenna can be used for this RF module. C11 and L1 are populated for on board antenna and the C12 and CN1 are populated for external antenna. C13 is used for circuit fine tune only. Don’t need to populate here. RF Chip Circuit The AT86RF212 is a single-chip transceiver. It acts as radio interface between the antenna and microcontroller. T1 is a Combination of 896 MHz Balun and Filer. Frequency band is from 863 MHz to 928 MHz. It can block the other frequency from this band and let the band frequency pass with minimum power lost. The XTAL1 is RF chip external crystal. C3 and C8 are RF chip power supply bypass capacitors. Capacitors C3 and C7 are by pass capacitors for RF chip internal regulators to ensure stable operation. Details of the internal operation see IC specification. Microcontroller Circuit The PIC24F16KA102 is 16-bit flash microcontroller. It is mainly used to control the RF chip operation and data transition through the SPI interface and a few I/O pins. SPI pin assignment is listed here. - P21(RB13) : MOSI - P18(RB10) : MISO - P19(RB11) : SCLK - P22(RB14) : /SEL And other pins are connected to the edge connector CN2. It is used for the connection between RF module and main system. It is included UART port, In System Programming (ISP) port and other General Purpose Input Output pins. For the sub-1 GHz bands, it supports low data rates (20 and 40 kbit/s) of the IEEE Standard 802.15.4-2003/2006 [1, 2] and provides optional data rates (100 and 250 kbit/s) using O-QPSK, according to the IEEE Standard 802.15.4-2006 [1] and the respective IEEE 802.15.4c-2009 Amendment [3]. Furthermore, proprietary High Data Rate Modes up to 1000 kbit/s can be employed. The AT86RF212 is a true SPI-to-antenna solution. RF-critical components except the antenna, crystal, and de-coupling capacitors are integrated on-chip. MAC and AES hardware accelerators improve overall system power efficiency and timing. 1.1 General Circuit Description The AT86RF212 single-chip RF transceiver provides a complete radio interface between the antenna and the microcontroller. It comprises the analog radio part, digital modulation and demodulation, including time and frequency synchronization, as well as data buffering. A single 128 byte TRX buffer stores receive or transmit data. Communication between transmitter and receiver is based on direct sequence spread spectrum with different modulation schemes and spreading codes. The number of external components is minimized so that only the antenna, a filter (at high output power levels), the crystal, and four bypass capacitors are required. The bidirectional differential antenna pins are used in common for RX and TX, i.e. no external antenna switch is needed. Control of an external power amplifier is supported by two digital control signals (differential operation). The AT86RF212 supports the IEEE 802.15.4-2006 standard mandatory BPSK modulation and optional O-QPSK modulation in the 868.3 MHz and 915 MHz bands. In addition, it supports the O-QPSK modulation defined in IEEE 802.15.4c-2009 for the Chinese 780 MHz band. For applications not necessarily targeting IEEE compliant networks, the radio transceiver supports proprietary High Data Rate Modes based on O-QPSK. The AT86RF212 features hardware supported 128 bit security operation. The standalone AES encryption/decryption engine can be accessed in parallel to all PHY operational modes. Configuration of the AT86RF212, reading and writing of data memory, as well as the AES hardware engine are controlled by the SPI interface and additional control signals. On-chip low-dropout voltage regulators provide the analog and digital 1.8 V power supply. Control registers retain their settings in sleep mode when the regulators are turned off. The RX and TX signal processing paths are highly integrated and optimized for low power consumption. The transceiver block diagram is shown in Figure 1-1. AT86RF212 Figure 1-1. INTERTEK TESTING SERVICE RF Exposure Evaluation For Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) evaluation of the Transmitter Unit, with reference to TCB Exclusions List revised on Feb 24, 2011, portable transmitters with output power less than low threshold and operating within 2.5cm from person’s body can be certified by TCB without the SAR evaluation. The output power for portable transmitters is defined as the higher of the conducted or radiated (EIRP) source-based time averaging output power. And the low threshold is equal to (60/fGHz) mW for d < 2.5cm, where fGHz is mid-band frequency in GHz, and d is the distance from the portable transmitter to a person’s body, excluding hands, wrists, feet, and ankles. For the Module of the tested model of TRFM915, the measured peak conducted power was 8.15 mW. The maximum source-based time averaging duty factor is 100%. The conducted source-based time averaging output power =(8.15*1) mW =8.15 mW The measured maximum field strength (FS) was 108.0 dBμV/m. The distance (D) between the antenna and the equipment under test (EUT) was 3 meters. From these data, the radiated (EIRP) source-based time-averaging output power can be calculated by: The radiated power = (FS*D)2 / 30 mW =18.93 mW The radiated (EIRP) source-based time-averaging output power =(18.93*1) mW =18.93 mW The low threshold in the 902~928MHz band is 65.57 mW. From the above calculation, output power obtained in both method is less than low threshold, it is concluded that the handset can be certified by TCB without the SAR evaluation.
