1 Supplementary Instructions for EVDO Model No. CF-T5/CF-W5 Series This manual contains supplementary instructions regarding the use of the computer. It ex- plains the cases where the operation of the computer differs from that in the Operating In- structions. Your computer is equipped with the EVDO enabling you to communicate using radio fre- quencies. 2 The following safety precautions must be observed during all phases of the operation, usage, service or repair of any Personal Computer or Handheld Computer incorporating EVDO. Manufacturers of the cellular terminal are advised to convey the following safety informa- tion to users and operating personnel and to incorporate these guidelines into all manuals supplied with the product. Failure to comply with these precautions violates safety standards of design, manufacture and intended use of the product. Panasonic assumes no liability for customer failure to comply with these precautions. When in a hospital or other health care facility, observe the restrictions on the use of mobiles. Switch Personal Computer or Handheld Computer incorporating EVDO off, if instructed to do so by the guidelines posted in sensitive areas. Medical equipment may be sensitive to RF energy. The operation of cardiac pacemakers, other implanted medical equipment and hearing aids can be affected by interference from Personal Computer or Handheld Computer incorporating EVDO placed close to the device. If in doubt about po- tential danger, contact the physician or the manufacturer of the device to verify that the equipment is properly shielded. Pacemaker patients are advised to keep their Personal Computer or Handheld Computer incorporating EVDO away from the pacemaker, while it is on. Switch off Personal Computer or Handheld Computer incorporating EVDO before boarding an aircraft. Make sure it cannot be switched on inadvertently. The operation of wireless appliances in an aircraft is forbidden to prevent interference with communica- tions systems. Failure to observe these instructions may lead to the suspension or denial of cellular services to the offender, legal action, or both. Do not operate Personal Computer or Handheld Computer incorporating EVDO in the presence of flammable gases or fumes. Switch off the cellular terminal when you are near petrol stations, fuel depots, chemical plants or where blasting opera- tions are in progress. Operation of any electrical equipment in potentially explo- sive atmospheres can constitute a safety hazard. Your Personal Computer or Handheld Computer incorporating EVDO receives and transmits radio frequency energy while switched on. Remember that interference can occur if it is used close to TV sets, radios, computers or inadequately shielded equip- ment. Follow any special regulations and always switch off Personal Computer or Handheld Computer incorporating EVDO wherever forbidden, or when you suspect that it may cause interference or danger. Safety Precautions Precautions 3 Road safety comes first! Do not use a Personal Computer or Handheld Computer in- corporating EVDO while driving a vehicle. Do not place the computer with EVDO in an area where it could cause personal injury to the driver or passengers. It is recom- mended to stow the unit in the boot or secure stowage area while driving. Do not place the computer with EVDO in an area over an air bag or in the vicinity where an air bag may deploy. Air bags inflate with great force and if the computer with EVDO is placed in the air bag deployment area may be propelled with great force and cause serious injury to occu- pants of the vehicle. 4 For U.S.A. This manual contains supplementary instructions regarding the use of the computer. It explains the cases where the operation of the computer differs from that in the Operating Instructions. Your computer is equipped with Wireless LAN enabling you to communicate using radio frequencies. Supplementary Instructions for Wireless LAN FCC Radio Frequency Interference Requirements This product is restricted to indoor use due to its operation in the 5.15 to 5.25 GHz frequency range. FCC requires this product to be used indoors for the frequency range 5.15 to 5.25 GHz to reduce the potential for harmful interference to co-channel Mobile Satellite systems. High power radars are allocated as primary users of the 5.25 to 5.35 GHz and 5.65 to 5.85 GHz bands. These radar stations can cause interference with and /or damage this product. NOTEz The communication speeds and distances differ depending on the devices that support the wireless LAN, the installation environment and other ambient conditions. z One characteristic of radio waves is that th eir transmission rate tends to drop as the communication distance increases. It is recommended that the devices supporting the wireless LAN be used in close vicinity to each other. z The rate may drop while a microwave oven is being used. Windows XP z Do not use the Fast User Switching function. Do not use wireless LAN on airpl anes, in hospitals, or in other locations where wireless LAN signa ls may affect the operation of devices in the vicinity. z If you intend to use the computer in the environments described above, turn the wireless LAN off using the following method: 1 Double-click or on the taskbar. 2 Select your wireless LAN adaptor and select [General]. 3 Select [Off] for [Switch radio]. 4 Select [OK].The icon will turn to . Precautions 4 Wireless LAN To prevent theft of dat a or unauthorized access to the hard disk via a wireless LAN. z If you plan to use wireless LAN functions, we recommend that you do so only after making the appropriate security settings, such as for data encryption. We recommend turning the wireless LAN off when it is not used or out of range. z If you leave the wireless LAN on, the battery's operating time is shortened. To use the wireless LAN, set the profile using the following procedure.The settings will vary for diff erent network environments de pending on the network system being used. For more details, a sk your system administrator or the person in charge of the network. CAUTIONz Set profiles for each user using the following procedure. NOTE Windows XP z If [Windows XP is currently configured to manage the Intel(R) PRO/Wireless LAN adaptor.] is displayed, select [Yes]. Windows 2000 z After setting the profile, delete the profile displayed at the time of purchase (profile name: Default). 1 Double-click on the taskbar. 2 Select your wireless LAN adap ter and select [General]. 3 Select [On] for [Switch radio].
