EXP3240 12/18/2 11:06 AM Page 12 1 Introduction The Uniden EXP3240 Series (EXP3240/EXP3241) 2.4GHz cordless phones are designed and engineered to exacting standards for reliability, long life, and outstanding performance. NOTE:Some illustrations in this manual may differ from the actual unit for explanation purposes. The color of your cordless phone may vary. Features The cordless phone features include AutoTalkand AutoStandby. AutoTalkallows you to answer a call by just removing the handset from the base so you don’t have to waste time pushing buttons. AutoStandbyallows you to hang up by simply returning the handset to the base. The UltraClear Plus™true compander circuitry virtually eliminates background noise. This innovative technology, together with 20 different channels, provides you with the best possible reception during all your conversations. To protect you against misbilled calls which might result from your phone being activated by other equipment, the cordless phone has Random Code™digital security which automatically selects one of approx. 262,000 digital security codes for the handset and base. Also, the AutoSecure™feature electronically locks your phone when the handset is in the base. Rocket Dial™is a one-touch speed dial key that automatically dials your most important or frequently called number. The number dialed, is a preset number stored by the user. Choose the best locationC. Connect the base unit B. Install the rechargeable battery pack into the handsetD.Choose the dialing mode A.Choose the best location Before choosing a location for your new phone, read the INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS included in the PRECAUTIONS AND IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS. Here are some important guidelines you should consider: •Be sure there is sufficient space to raise the base antenna to a vertical position. •The location should be close to both a phone jack and a continuous power outlet which is not switchable. •Keep the base and handset away from sources of electrical noise such as motors and fluorescent lighting. •The base can be placed on a desk, tabletop, or mounted on a standard wall plate. B. Install the rechargeable battery pack into the handset The handset is powered by a rechargeable battery pack. The battery recharges automatically when the handset is placed in the base unit. Charge the handset battery pack for at least 15-20 hours before using your new cordless telephone for the first time!To maximize the charge capacity of your battery pack, DO NOT plug the telephone cord into the base unit and wall jack until the battery is fully charged. NOTE:If your home has specially wired alarm equipment connected to the telephone line, be sure that installing the system does not disable your alarm equipment. If you have questions about what will disable your alarm equipment, contact your telephone company or a qualified installer. 1) Press down on the handset battery case cover (use the finger indention for a better grip) and slide the cover downward to remove. 2) Plug the battery pack connector (red & black wires) into the small, black jack inside the battery compartment (the connector notches fit into the grooves of the jack only one-way). Match the wire colors to the polarity label in the battery compartment, connect the battery and listen for a click to insure connection. 3) Make certain you have made a good connection by slightly pulling on the battery wires to insure that there is a secure connection. If the battery connector is not securely connected, the handset will not charge properly. 4) Place the battery case cover back on the handset by sliding it upwards until it clicks into place. 6 Page To locate the handset (while it’s off the base), press find handseton the base. The handset beeps for 60 seconds. Paging is canceled when pressing any key, find handseton the base or return the handset to the base. Flash and Call Waiting If you have “Call waiting” service and a call waiting tone sounds while you are on a call, press flashto accept the waiting call. There is a short pause, then you will hear the new caller. To return to the original caller, press flashagain. NOTE: You must subscribe through your local telephone company to receive Call Waiting Service. Storing a Phone Number in Memory Your cordless phone has 1 Rocket Dial memory location and 10 additional memory locations for storing important telephone numbers. You can store your most frequent dialed number in the one-touch Rocket Dial location. 1) Remove the handset from the base. 2) Press mem. The talk/batt lowLED flashes. 3) Enter the phone number, up to 20 digits. If a pause is needed during the dialing sequence, press redial/pto insert a pause. Each pause counts as a digit and represents a two second delay in time between digits as they are sent. 4) Press memagain. To actually store a number in it’s designated location; 5) Press Rocket Dial. or 5) Press memory location (0-9) on the keypad to store a number. A tone indicates that the number is stored. If you enter a number in a location that has a previously stored number it will overwrite the existing number without warning. NOTES: • The pause button counts as one digit. Pressing redial/pmore than once increases the length of pause between numbers. • You have 30 seconds after pressing memto enter the number you wish to store. Otherwise, the handset will beep rapidly. • Memory location for the Rocket Dial is independent from the memory location for Memory Dial. Dialing a Stored Number Using the memory location features 1) Press talk, then press mem. 2) Enter the memory location (0-9) on the keypad. The stored number automatically dials. NOTE: If you select a memory location that does not have a stored number, the handset will beep rapidly and the phone will not dial. EXP3240 12/18/2 11:06 AM Page 6 7 One-touch Rocket Dial Your phone is equipped with “One-touch Rocket Dial” for instant dialing. It is used to dial the phone number stored in the one-touch Rocket Dial location (See “Storing a Phone Number in Memory”). To instantly dial the phone number stored in the one-touch Rocket Dial location, simply press Rocket Dial. (There is no need to press talk. The phone will automatically dial). If you press Rocket Dialand a phone number is not stored in the one-touch Rocket Dial location, the phone will beep rapidly and will not dial. Chain Dialing The memory locations on the handset are not limited to phone numbers. You can also store a group of numbers (up to 20 digits) that you need to enter once your call connects. This is referred to as Chain Dialing. An example of this is a bank account number. Once you have called your bank, and are prompted to enter the account number, simply press memand the location number (0-9)where the special number has been stored. Store your special number in memory as you would store a phone number (Refer to “Storing a Phone Number in Memory”). Erasing a Stored Number from Memory 1) Remove the handset from the base unit. 2) Press memtwice. 3) Press Rocket Dialor the memory location (0-9). A tone indicates that the stored number is erased from memory. Changing the Digital Security Code The digital security code is an identification code used to connect the handset and the base unit. Normally, setting the code is not necessary. The first time you charge your handset, the security code is automatically set. In the rare situation that you suspect another cordless telephone is using the same security code, you can change the code. 1) Remove the handset from the base unit. Press and hold find handseton the base. 2) The handset begins emitting a paging sound. While holding find handsetfor at least 3 seconds, place the handset in the base unit. The paging sound stops. Leave the handset in the base for more than 3 seconds. A new random security code is set. NOTE: If the handset battery pack is completely discharged or the battery pack is removed, the digital security code will be lost. If this happens, a new security code is set automatically next time the battery pack is charged. EXP3240 12/18/2 11:06 AM Page 7 8 Troubleshooting If your cordless telephone is not performing to your expectations, please try these simple steps. NOTE: Do not attempt to service this unit yourself. Servicing must be performed by qualified personnel. Symptom The charge/in useLED won’t illuminate when the handset is placed in the base. The audio sounds weak and/or scratchy. Can’t make or receive calls. Handset doesn’t ring or receive a page. Severe noise interference If you still have a problem Suggestion •Make sure the AC adapter is plugged into the base and a wall outlet. •Make sure the handset is properly seated in the base. •Make sure that the charging contacts on the handset and on the base are clean. •Move the handset and/or base to a different location away from metal objects or appliances and try again. •Press channelto help eliminate background noise. •Check both ends of the telephone line cord. •Make sure the AC adapter is plugged into the base and a wall outlet. •Make sure that the base antenna is in the vertical position. •Disconnect the AC adapter for a few minutes, then reconnect it. •Change the digital security code (See page 7). •Make sure that the handset is not too far from the base. •The Nickel-Cadmium battery pack may be weak. Charge the battery for 15-20 hours. •The handset may be too far away from the base. •Place the base away from appliances or metal objects. •Change the digital security code (See page 7). •Keep the handset away from microwave ovens, computers, remote control toys, wireless microphones, alarm systems, intercoms, room monitors, f…
