About Your AirPort Card Includes information about the AirPort Card and AirPort software Template APPLE CONFIDENTIAL 3 1 About Your AirPort Card With the AirPort Card installed in your computer, you can do the following: m Access an AirPort network at home, school, or work and use it to browse the Internet, send and receive email, and more. m Set up a Computer-to-Computer network between two or more AirPort-equipped computers, which you can use to transfer files or play multiplayer games. m Set up a computer to share its Internet connection with computers using AirPort. m Set up an AirPort network using an AirPort Base Station, available from your Apple- authorized dealer or the Apple Store at store.apple.com About AirPort AirPort technology offers a simple, fast, and affordable way to provide wireless Internet access anywhere in your home, classroom, or small office. Instead of using traditional cables to create a network, AirPort uses wireless local area network (LAN) technology to provide wireless communication between computers. How AirPort Works In a traditional network, computers are connected through a series of wires that transfer information among them. With AirPort, data is transferred between computers over a wireless network using radio waves. Important If you purchased the AirPort Base Station at the same time as your AirPort Card, install the AirPort Card and then set up the AirPort Base Station using the instructions provided with the base station. The AirPort Setup Assistant described in this booklet is the same one used to set up the AirPort Base Station. To set up the AirPort Base Station and configure your computer to access the AirPort network it creates, you only need to use the AirPort Setup Assistant once. There are three ways to create a wireless network. You can use an AirPort-equipped computer to create a temporary Computer-to-Computer network, which other AirPort computers within range can join. You can set up an AirPort-equipped computer with an Internet connection to share its connection with other computers using AirPort. Or you can create a more permanent wireless network using an Apple AirPort Base Station. In this kind of network, all wireless communication goes through the base station to other computers on the network or to the Internet. How AirPort Provides Wireless Internet Access The following are ways that you can use AirPort technology to provide Internet access to AirPort-equipped computers: m Connect an AirPort Base Station (available from your Apple-authorized dealer or the Apple Store at store.apple.com) to an existing network that already has Internet access, such as in a school or small office. m Connect a cable modem or DSL modem to an AirPort Base Station, or if your base station has an internal modem, connect it to a telephone line. The AirPort Base Station establishes an Internet connection and also creates a wireless network through which multiple computers can access the Internet. Note: To use AirPort to access the Internet, you must have an account with an Internet service provider (fees may apply). Some Internet service providers (ISPs) are not currently compatible with AirPort. For more information on using AirPort with your Internet account, contact your ISP or go to the AppleCare Knowledge Base at kbase.info.apple.com Template APPLE CONFIDENTIAL 5 Setting Up Your Computer to Use AirPort Step 1: Do You Need to Install the AirPort Card? If you ordered your AirPort Card with your new computer, the AirPort Card is already installed. If the AirPort Card came in a separate kit, you need to install it yourself. Instructions for installing the AirPort Card are in the manual that came with your computer. You can also find them on the Apple Support Web site at www.apple.com/support. Do I need to know the AirPort ID of my AirPort Card? If you are going to use your computer on a large AirPort network, such as in a school or office, you may need to provide the AirPort ID (sometimes known as the MAC address) of your AirPort Card to your network administrator. Your network administrator can use the AirPort ID to provide an extra level of security for the network. The AirPort ID is 12 characters printed on a label on the AirPort Card. You can also find your AirPort ID this way by choosing AirPort from the Configure pop-up menu of the Network pane of System Preferences, and clicking the AirPort tab. Do I need to install an AirPort antenna? No. The antenna used by the AirPort Card is already built into your computer. Warning The AirPort Card has been designed so that you can install it yourself. If, after reading the instructions, you feel uncomfortable about installing the card, you can have an Apple-authorized service provider install it for you. If you follow the instructions, you should not be concerned about damaging your computer. However, if you do attempt to install the AirPort Card yourself, any damage you may cause to your equipment will not be covered by the limited warranty on your computer. See an Apple-authorized dealer or service provider for additional information about this or any other warranty question. Consult the service and support information that came with your computer for instructions on how to contact an Apple-authorized service provider or Apple for service. 6 Template APPLE CONFIDENTIAL Step 2: If Necessary, Set Up the AirPort Base Station If you purchased the AirPort Base Station at the same time as your AirPort Card, do the following: 1 If necessary, install the AirPort Card in your computer. 2 Skip the rest of the steps in this booklet and set up the AirPort Base Station using the instructions provided with the base station. The AirPort Setup Assistant described in the next step is the same one used to set up the AirPort Base Station. Failure to follow these instructions could damage your equipment and void its warranty. Note: Written and video instructions covering customer-installable parts are available at http://www.info.apple.com/installparts/. Warning: During this procedure, keep small parts away from children. Tools Required • Coin • Jeweler’s flat-blade screwdriver (if keyboard is locked) Opening the Computer Warning: Always shut down your computer before opening it to avoid damaging its internal components or causing injury. After you shut down the computer, the internal components can be very hot. Let the computer cool down before continuing. 1. Place your computer on a clean, flat surface. 2. Shut down your computer and wait thirty minutes before continuing. 3. Close the computer, turn it over, and locate the battery latch. (Figure 1) Use a coin to turn the battery latch 1/4 turn clockwise to unlock the battery. Gently remove the battery. Removing the battery will prevent you from accidentally turning on the computer. Warning: Removing the battery before shutting down your computer may result in data loss. Figure 1 5. Turn over the computer. 6. Raise the display so you can access the keyboard. 7. Make sure the keyboard locking screw, located in the small plastic tab to the left of the Num Lock key (Figure 2) , is not in the locked position. Your iBook comes with the keyboard unlocked, so unless you or someone else locked the keyboard, you can skip this step. To unlock the keyboard, turn the screw 1/2 turn. Release the keyboard by pulling down on the keyboard release tabs (located to the left of the F1 and F12 keys) (Figure 3) , then lift the top portion of the keyboard up slightly, and toward the display. Touch a metal surface on the inside of the computer to discharge any static electricity, as shown. (Figure 5) Important: To avoid electrostatic discharge damage, always ground yourself by touching the computer’s framework before you touch any parts or install any components inside the computer. To avoid static electricity building back up in your body, do not walk around the room until you have completed the installation and closed the computer. Figure 5 Removing the Installed AirPort Card 1. Unlatch the flexible wire holder that secures the card. (Figure 6) Figure 6 2. Use the pull-tab on the card to remove it from the slot. 3. If the AirPort Card came with the AirPort adapter (Figure 7) , remove the metal clip (A) and pull the AirPort Card (B) from the adapter (C). The adapter and metal clip are not used with your iBook. Figure 7 2. Locate the AirPort antenna cable connector and plug it into the port (located just below the pull-tab) on the end of the AirPort Card. Make sure the connector is straight before inserting it into the card. (Figure 8) 3. To install the AirPort Card, gently slide it (with the AirPort ID number and bar code facing up) under the wire bracket and securely into the AirPort Card slot. Use the wire holder to secure the AirPort Card in place by inserting its prongs into the slots in the RAM shield. (Figure 9) Figure 9 Closing the Computer 1. Flip the keyboard back toward the keyboard opening in the case. 2. Hold the keyboard at a 45-degree angle above the keyboard opening, and insert the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the slot under the edge of the opening. (Figure 10) Important: Make sure that all the tabs are seated and that the keyboard rests flush against the edge of the opening. 3. Lay the keyboard flat into the keyboard opening. Pull down on the keyboard release tabs and then press down on the top portion of the keyboard. (Figure 11) Figure 11 5. Let go of the keyboard release tabs to secure the keyboard in place. 6. Close the display and turn the iBook over. 7. Replace the battery into the battery compartment. Hold the battery flush and use a coin to turn the latch counterclockwise 1/4 turn to lock the battery into place. (Figure 12) Figure 12 8. Turn your iBook over and open the display. 9. Reconnect the power cord and any other cables that were connected and restart your computer. Note: You may need to reset the date and time (using the Date & Time control panel). Warning: Never turn on your computer unless all of its internal and external parts are in place and it is fully reassembled. 073-0543 Rev. B  Power Mac G4 Cube AirPort Card Replacement Instructions Be sure to follow these instructions carefully. Failure to follow these instructions could result in damage to your equipment and may void your warranty. Replacing the AirPort Card in your computer requires five basic steps: • Turn off the computer. • Remove the computer core from the enclosure. • Remove the installed AirPort Card, if applicable. • Install the replacement AirPort Card. • Replace the computer core in the enclosure. Note: Written and video instructions covering customer-installable parts are available at: http://www.info.apple.com/installparts/. Tools Required No tools are required for this procedure. Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Static electricity, a normal and natural phenomenon, builds up on your body as you walk around. You experience an electrostatic discharge (ESD) when you touch an object and feel a spark. ESD can cause damage to the internal components of your computer. To avoid ESD damage, read and follow all instructions. 2 - Power Mac G4 Cube AirPort Card Removing the Computer Core From the Enclosure Warning: Always turn off your computer before opening it to avoid damaging its internal components. 1Place your computer on a clean, flat surface. 2Shut down your computer by opening the Special menu and choosing Shut Down. Then wait five minutes for the computer’s internal components to cool down. 3Unplug all cables from the computer except the power cord. Note: If you have never plugged in your computer, connect the computer’s power cord and plug it in. 4Turn the computer on its side on a soft, clean cloth, and ground yourself by touching the bare metal between the video ports. Important: To avoid electrostatic discharge, always ground yourself by touching the bare metal before you touch any parts or install any components inside the computer. To avoid static electricity building back up in your body, do not walk around the room until you have completed the installation and closed the computer. 5Unplug the power cord. Touch Bare Metal Power Mac G4 Cube AirPort Card - 3 6Turn the computer upside down, and push down on the latch to release it. Allow the latch to extend completely. 7Gently pull the core from the computer enclosure and place the core on a soft cloth. Latch Extended Latch Core Enclosure 4 - Power Mac G4 Cube AirPort Card Removing an AirPort Card 1Disconnect the coaxial antenna cable from the port on the end of the AirPort Card. 2Pull the plastic tab on the end of the AirPort Card to release the AirPort Card from the PCI card connector. Installing an AirPort Card 1Insert the AirPort Card through the opening in the PCI card guide and into the connector on the logic board. 2Carefully attach the coaxial antenna cable to the port on the end of the AirPort Card. Note: The antenna cable might be stowed on the side of the PCI card guide. Do not bend or crimp the cable tightly. Note: The core fits into the enclosure only one way. Position the core so the ports are toward the back of the enclosure. 2With a flat hand, press down on the latch until it locks into place. Firmly press the core to ensure it is fully secured within the enclosure. Important: Do not lift or carry your computer by the core latch. The enclosure could fall off the core and be damaged. DISCUSSION iMac (Flat Panel) and iMac (17-inch Flat Panel) AirPort Card Note: If your AirPort Card came with the AirPort adapter (shown in Figure 1) remove the metal clip and pull the AirPort Card from the adapter. The adapter and metal clip are not used with the iMac (Flat Panel) computer. Figure 1 AirPort adapter Installation Instructions Important: Follow the instructions in this sheet carefully. Tools Required The only tool required for this procedure is a Phillips screwdriver. Opening the Computer Warning: Always shut down your computer before opening it to avoid damaging its internal components or causing injury. 1. Unplug all cables from the computer except the power cord. 2. Supporting the neck and the base, lay the computer down on a soft cloth (Figure 2). Installing the AirPort Card Note: If you are replacing a defective AirPort Card, rather than adding a card, remove the defective card before proceeding. 1. Apple confirms all internal antennas will be installed by Apple Computer or Authorized OEM installer in desktop, portable or base station. 2. Apple confirms that for portable and desktop systems, end user will only be required to insert Wireless LAN card into the Apple custom Card Edge Connector and all the internal antennas will be installed in a location where the separation distance between the transmitter and the body of the end user will be more than 2.5 cm. 3. Apple confirms that Apple will allow the end user to instal the external antennas as documented in the filing in a desktop or base station. End user installation instructions will be provided. A 20cm separation statement is not applicable because SAR tests have been performed on the external antennas. The results of the SAR tests demonstrate the external antennas are in compliance with the General Population/Uncontrolled Exposure Partial Body Limit of 1.6mW/g per OET65 Supplement C. All the internal antenna will be installed in the locations where the separation distance between the transmitting antenna to the body of end user will be more than 2.5cm. > 3. Apple will allow the end user to install the external antennas as documented in this filing. When the external antennas are provided for end user to install, such external antennas will only be installed in desktop or base station only.
