A AC — alternating current — The form of electricity that powers your computer when you plug the AC adapter power cable in to an electrical outlet. ACPI — advanced configuration and power interface — A power management specification that enables Microsoft® Windows® operating systems to put a computer in standby or hibernate mode to conserve the amount of electrical power allocated to each device attached to the computer. AGP — accelerated graphics port — A dedicated graphics port that allows system memory to be used for video-related tasks. AGP delivers a smooth, true-color video image because of the faster interface between the video circuitry and the computer memory. antivirus software — A program designed to identify, quarantine, and/or delete viruses from your computer. APR — advanced port replicator — A docking device that allows you to conveniently use a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and other devices with your portable computer. ASF — alert standards format — A standard to define a mechanism for reporting hardware and software alerts to a management console. ASF is designed to be platform- and operating system-independent. B backup — A copy of a program or data file on a floppy disk, CD, or hard drive. As a precaution, back up the data files from your hard drive regularly. battery — An internal power source used to operate portable computers when not connected to an AC adapter and an electrical outlet. battery life span — The length of time (years) during which a portable computer battery is able to be depleted and recharged. battery operating time — The length of time (minutes or hours) that a portable computer battery holds a charge while powering the computer. BIOS — basic input/output system — A program (or utility) that serves as an interface between the computer hardware and the operating system. Unless you understand what effect the settings have on the computer, do not change the settings for this program. Also referred to as the system setup program. bit — The smallest unit of data interpreted by your computer. Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG User's Guide Your Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection adapter works with either 802.11b or 802.11g wireless standard. Operating at 2.4 GHz frequency at speeds of up to 54 Mbps you can now connect your computer to high-capacity existing 802.11b networks using multiple access points within large or small environments, and also to high-speed 802.11g networks. Computers use radio communications to send data between each other. You can communicate directly with other wireless computers, or connect to an existing network through a wireless access point. When you set up your wireless adapter, you select the operating mode for the kind of wireless network you want. You can use your wireless adapter to connect to other similar wireless devices that comply with the 802.11 standard for wireless networking. Choosing a Wireless LAN Wireless LANs can operate with or without access points, depending on the number of users in the network. Infrastructure mode uses access points to allow wireless computers to send and receive information. Wireless computers transmit to the access point, the access point receives the information and rebroadcasts it to other computers. The access point can also connect to a wired network or to the Internet. Multiple access points can work together to provide coverage over a wide area. Peer-to-Peer mode, also called Ad Hoc mode, works without access points and allows wireless computers to send information directly to other wireless computers. Ad Hoc Mode is only supported in 802.11b and 802.11g networks. You can use Peer-to-Peer mode to network computers in a home or small office or to set up a temporary wireless network for a meeting. Configuring a Wireless LAN There are three basic components that must be configured for an 802.11 wireless LAN to operate properly: l Network Name: Each wireless network uses a unique Network Name to identify the network. This name is called the Service Set Identifier (SSID). When you set up your wireless adapter, you specify the SSID. If you want to connect to an existing network, you must use the name for that network. If you are setting up your own network you can make up your own name and use it on each computer. The name can be up to 32 characters long and contain letters and numbers. l Profiles: When you set up your computer to access a wireless network, the wireless client manager creates a profile for the wireless settings that you specify. If you want to connect to another network, you can scan for existing networks and make a temporary connection, or create a new profile for that network. After you create profiles, your computer will automatically connect when you change locations. l Security: The 802.11 wireless networks use encryption to help protect your data. Wired equivalent privacy (WEP) uses a 64-bit or 128-bit shared encryption key to scramble data. Before a computer transmits data, it scrambles the data using the secret encryption key. The receiving computer uses this same key to unscramble the data. If you are connecting to an existing network, use the encryption key provided by the administrator of the wireless network. If you are setting up your own network you can make up your own key and use it on each computer. m Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is a security enhancement that strongly increases the level of data protection and access control to a WLAN. WPA mode enforces 802.1x authentication and key-exchange to strengthen data encryption. WPA utilizes its Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP). TKIP provides important data encryption enhancements that include a per-packet key mixing function, a message integrity check (MIC) named "Michael", an extended initialization vector (IV) with sequencing rules, and a also re-keying mechanism. All inputs to the modules are buffered through the radio circuitry. 3 The modular transmitter has its own power supply regulator. 4 The modular transmitter has an antenna that complies with section 15.203 and 15.204(c) of the FCC rules. It has a UFL type of connector at the transmitter end and is soldered to the antenna. Also the antenna will be internal in the Dell notebook computer (Model: PP11L) and inaccessible to the user. The module is being approved with Foxconn (model: HFT17-DL04) and Hitachi (Model: WDAN- DQJM5001) antennas. 5 The modular transmitter is being approved as a Limited Modular Approval; therefore it was installed in the mini PCI slot of the Dell notebook computer (Model: PP11L). The notebook computer complies with the AC line conducted requirements of Section 15.207. 6 The modular transmitter will be labeled with its own FCC ID. Also, the end user will be informed to display a label referring to the enclosed module. The exterior label will read as follows: “Contains Transmitter Module FCC ID: E2K24BNHM” or “Contains FCC ID: E2K24BNHM”. 7 The modular transmitter is manufactured so that the user cannot influence the operation of the transmitter that will operate outside of the scope of the regulations. Also, a bios lock ensures that the modules will only function in the Dell notebook computer (Model: PP11L) and any other systems that have been FCC approved or are in the review stage of the approval process through a Class II Permissive Change. Also, it ensures that module will not function in any non-Dell or non-FCC- approved Dell system. 8 The modular transmitter meets the MPE calculations of 47 CFR 1.1307(b)(1) for this Dell notebook computer (Model: PP11L). The system Device ID and Regulatory ID are stored in the SMBIOS table. Because the SMBIOS information can not be read directly from Windows and not all information elements are exposed via WMI, Dell will provide a 16-bit DOS application that will query the appropriate SMBIOS tables and map the information into the Windows registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Dell Computer Corporation\SysInfo The vendor is responsible for architecting their Install Shield (MSI) package such that sysinfo.exe is executed (e.g. “launchappandwait()”) to generate the appropriate SMBIOS information in the registry. The Install Shield package is then required to query the following keys: If “System Manufactuer” does not contain the string “Dell” Then fail (“Installation not supported on non Dell platforms.”) Else if “SystemId” is not found in SystemId map OR “RegulatoryID” is not found in RegulatoryID map Then fail (“Installation not supported on this platform.”) The Install shield package is responsible for checking the SystemId and RegulatoryID against values stored in a separate file (e.g. .ini). The vendor is responsible for providing basic encryption/decryption tools that allow Dell to scramble the SystemID/RegulatoryID lists into the .ini file. This allows Dell to add support for new systems to existing Installer packages, and prevents the driver lock from being circumvented. 3.0 References Dellinfo.zip (pw = “dell”)

April 26, 2005 RE: Dell Computer Corporation FCC ID: E2K24BNHM Answers to the ATCB comments on the above referenced Application. 1. A Limited Modular Approval Cover (specific to the tested system) letter addressing all appropriate issues should be provided. Please refer to Modular Approval Attestation. 2. Information regarding what systems (and antennas) are being approved and what systems the bios lock will limit the card to be operational in. This could be included as part of 1) above if desired. Please refer to Modular Approval Attestation. 3. Dell labeling (artwork, photos, and/or drawings as can be provided) showing the Card labeled using Dell's FCC ID. Current labels appear to only have Intel FCC ID's. Please refer to the Label Information. The FCC ID and IC ID are printed in the Intel factory to the label wrap and these ID’s are contained in the exhibit “Label Information - FCC ID”. The other exhibit (Label Information - Marks) shows the other regulatory marks that are pre-printed on the label wrap. In the end, all of the markings in both files are on the card regulatory label prior to arriving at Dell. 4. The current labeling exhibit shows the external portion of the laptop being labeled. An explanation as to how this label is applied only to devices that contain the wireless feature and not to laptops that do not have this feature should be supplied. In the Dell factory, there is a factory kit that contains the wireless card, wireless regulatory label that is placed on the platform, user guide, etc...). If an order calls for a wireless card, the wireless regulatory label is applied in the factory to the bottom of the platform. If an order does not call for a wireless card, no wireless regulatory label is applied to the platform. At the card level, there is always the Intel regulatory label present.
