A AC — alternating current — The form of electricity that powers your computer when you plug the AC adapter power cable in to an electrical outlet. ACPI — advanced configuration and power interface — A power management specification that enables Microsoft® Windows® operating systems to put a computer in standby or hibernate mode to conserve the amount of electrical power allocated to each device attached to the computer. AGP — accelerated graphics port — A dedicated graphics port that allows system memory to be used for video-related tasks. AGP delivers a smooth, true-color video image because of the faster interface between the video circuitry and the computer memory. antivirus software — A program designed to identify, quarantine, and/or delete viruses from your computer. APR — advanced port replicator — A docking device that allows you to conveniently use a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and other devices with your portable computer. ASF — alert standards format — A standard to define a mechanism for reporting hardware and software alerts to a management console. ASF is designed to be platform- and operating system-independent. B backup — A copy of a program or data file on a floppy disk, CD, or hard drive. As a precaution, back up the data files from your hard drive regularly. battery — An internal power source used to operate portable computers when not connected to an AC adapter and an electrical outlet. battery life span — The length of time (years) during which a portable computer battery is able to be depleted and recharged. battery operating time — The length of time (minutes or hours) that a portable computer battery holds a charge while powering the computer. BIOS — basic input/output system — A program (or utility) that serves as an interface between the computer hardware and the operating system. Unless you understand what effect the settings have on the computer, do not change the settings for this program. Also referred to as the system setup program. bit — The smallest unit of data interpreted by your computer. In case your hard drive is damaged or your computer has a virus, ensure that you always have a bootable CD or floppy disk available. Your Drivers and Utilities or Resource CD is a bootable CD. bootable disk — A disk that you can use to start your computer. In case your hard drive is damaged or your computer has a virus, ensure that you always have a bootable CD or floppy disk available. bps — bits per second — The standard unit for measuring data transmission speed. BTU — British thermal unit — A measurement of heat output. bus — A communication pathway between the components in your computer. bus speed — The speed, given in MHz, that indicates how fast a bus can transfer information. byte — The basic data unit used by your computer. A byte is usually equal to 8 bits. C C — Celsius — A temperature measurement system where 0° is the freezing point and 100° is the boiling point of water. cache — A special high-speed storage mechanism which can be either a reserved section of main memory or an independent high-speed storage device. The cache enhances the efficiency of many microprocessor operations. L1 cache — Primary cache stored inside the microprocessor. Regulatory Information: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless LAN 3A Mini PCI Adapter User's Guide Information For the User Regulatory Information Information for the user Safety Notices The FCC with its action in ET Docket 96-62 has adopted a safety standard for human exposure to radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic energy emitted by FCC certified equipment. The Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG LAN 3A Mini PCI Adapter meets the Human Exposure limits found in OET Bulletin 65, 2001, and ANSI/IEEE C95.1, 1992. Proper operation of this radio according to the instructions found in this manual will result in exposure substantially below the FCC’s recommended limits. The Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG LAN 3A Mini PCI Adapter has been tested and complies with the FCC & Industry Canada SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) requirements operating in a typical laptop configuration. The following safety precautions should be observed: • Do not touch or move antenna while the unit is transmitting or receiving. • Do not hold any component containing the radio such that the antenna is very close or touching any exposed parts of the body, especially the face or eyes, while transmitting. • Do not operate the radio or attempt to transmit data unless the antenna is connected; if not, the radio may be damaged. • Use in specific environments: o The use of wireless devices in hazardous locations is limited by the constraints posed by the safety directors of such environments. o The use of wireless devices on airplanes is governed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). o The use of wireless devices in hospitals is restricted to the limits set forth by each hospital. • Explosive Device Proximity Warning (see below) • Antenna Warning (see below) • Use on Aircraft Caution (see below) • Other Wireless Devices (see below) • Power Supply (Access Point) (see below) Explosive Device Proximity Warning Warning: Do not operate a portable transmitter (such as a wireless network device) near unshielded blasting caps or in an explosive environment unless the device has been modified to be qualified for such use. Antenna Warnings Warning: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless LAN products are not designed for use with high-gain directional antennas. Use of such antennas with these products is illegal. Use On Aircraft Caution Caution: Regulations of the FCC and FAA prohibit airborne operation of radio-frequency wireless devices because their signals could interfere with critical aircraft instruments. Other Wireless Devices Safety Notices for Other Devices in the Wireless Network: Refer to the documentation supplied with wireless Ethernet adapters or other devices in the wireless network. Local Restrictions on 802.11b / 802.11g Radio Usage Caution: Due to the fact that the frequencies used by 802.11b/802.11g wireless LAN devices may not yet be harmonized in all countries, 802.11b/802.11g products are designed for use only in specific countries, and are not allowed to be operated in countries other than those of designated use. As a user of these products, you are responsible for ensuring that the products are used only in the countries for which they were intended and for verifying that they are configured with the correct selection of frequency and channel for the country of use. Any deviation from the permissible settings for the country of use is an infringement of national law and may be punished as such. For country-specific information, see the additional compliance information supplied with the product. Wireless interoperability The Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG LAN 3A Mini PCI adapters are designed to be interoperable with any wireless LAN product that is based on direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) radio technology and to comply with the following standards: • IEEE Std. 802.1b/g-XXXX. Standard on Wireless LAN. • Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) certification, as defined by the WECA (Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance). The Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG LAN 3A Mini PCI adapter and your health The Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG WLAN 3A Mini PCI adapter, like other radio devices, emits radio frequency electromagnetic energy. The level of energy emitted by this device, however, is less than the electromagnetic energy emitted by other wireless devices such as mobile phones. The Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG WLAN 3A Mini PCI adapter wireless devices operate within the guidelines found in radio frequency safety standards and recommendations. These standards and recommendations reflect the consensus of the scientific community and result from deliberations of panels and committees of scientists who continually review and interpret the extensive research literature. On behalf of our client, Aegis Labs has included an application for a Grant of Equipment Authorization pursuant to Subpart C of part 15 of FCC Rules (47 CFR) regarding intentional radiators. The data within the test report demonstrates the equipment was tested in a manner described under Part 2 and 15 of the Code of Federal Regulations. This is a submittal for approval of the Dell notebook computer Inspiron|600m (MN: PP05L, FCC ID: E2K24GBRL) with an INTEL PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection (MN: WM3B2200BG) installed in its Mini PCI slot. The INTEL PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection (MN: WM3B2200BG) is a dual band WLAN adapter (802.11b and 802.11g). The notebook computer was tested with a set of Wistron NeWeb Corporation antennas and Hitachi antennas continuously transmitting and receiving form the MAIN and AUX antenna ports. A BlueTooth module approved as a modular device (FCC ID: IXMUB22111S) may also be installed in this chassis. The Wireless and BlueTooth module are not considered co-located as in the original grant. The analysis was carried out in accordance with the requirements of FCC 96-326, “Guidelines for Evaluating the Environmental Effects of Radio-Frequency Radiation” in accordance with Supplement C and, using methodologies contained within IEEE 1528. The Intel Mini PCI Type 3A Wireless LAN Adapter model WM3A2200BG located inside the Dell laptop was evaluated for compliance to the RF exposure requirements contained in section 2 “Applicable Documents”. The card was set to transmit at a maximum power level of 16.5dBm (802.11g mode) and a maximum power level of 17.4 dBm (802.11b mode) while operating with the duty cycle set at 100%. The Intel Mini PCI Type 3A Wireless LAN Adapter model WM3A2200BG is located inside a Dell laptop model number PP05L and utilizes a Mini PCI type A form factor and has been assessed fully for conservative SAR. Intel provided APREL laboratories with one production model of the Dell laptop model number PP05L. The Dell laptop can transmit with the LCD open (user mode) and with the LCD closed. The Dell laptop has an internal set of Hitachi diverse antennas which are located at the top side of the Laptop adjacent with the keyboard, below the hinge. The main transmitting antenna is located at the TOP Left hand Side of the Laptop below the LCD. For the purpose of the SAR analysis executed and subsequent report the Intel Mini PCI Type 3A Wireless LAN Adapter model WM3A2200BG located inside Dell laptop will not be labeled as the DUT (Device Under Test). Tests were executed at zero mm separation distance, for both direct contact SAR (for extremities) and body SAR analysis. While working in the 802.11b mode, the conservative 10g average for direct contact SAR for the DUT was found to be 0.41 W/kg for the peak RF output power of the mid channel (ch#6, f=2437MHz) at the Left side of the DUT with the LCD closed, with the left side of Laptop facing up against the phantom at 0mm separation. For body SAR analysis the conservative 1 g SAR was found to be 1.17 W/kg for the peak RF output power of the mid channel (ch#6, f=2437MHz) at the Left side of the DUT with the LCD closed, with the left side of Laptop facing up against the phantom at 0mm separation. While working in the 802.11g mode, the conservative 10g average for direct contact SAR for the DUT was found to be 0.35 W/kg for the peak RF output power of the mid channel (ch#6, f=2437MHz) at the Left side of the DUT with the LCD closed, with the left side of Laptop facing up against the phantom at 0mm separation. For body SAR analysis the conservative 1 g SAR was found to be 0.84 W/kg for the peak RF output power of the mid channel (ch#6, f=2437MHz) at the Left side of the DUT with the LCD closed, with the left side of Laptop facing up against the phantom at 0mm separation. Evaluation data and graphs are presented in this report. For the purpose of the SAR assessment the AC power source was used, and the conservative SAR position and frequency for each of the Test Case Scenarios was reassessed using the battery supply. It was found that the conservative SAR presented in this report was measured while using the AC supply. Based on the measured results and on how the Dell laptop model number PP50L will be marketed and used, it is certified that the DUT meets the requirements as set forth in the specifications, for the RF exposure environment contained within this report.
