This wireless Local Area Network solution is designed for both large and small businesses, and it is scalable so that you can add users and new network features as your networking needs grow. The 802.11a/b/g Mini-PCI is a dual band WLAN device that allows for access to both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz WLAN technologies. The 802.11a/b/g Mini-PCI will operate with at a maximum data rate of 11Mbps with 802.11b (2.4Ghz) wireless networks and a maximum data rate of 54Mbps with 802.11a (5Ghz) and 802.11g(2.4GHz) wireless networks. The 802.11a/b/g Mini-PCI will automatically detect and seamlessly roam between both 802.11b/g (2.4Ghz) and 802.11a (5Ghz) wireless networks 1-2 Using a Wireless Local Area Network A wireless LAN provides the same functionality of a wired network, but it eliminates the need to install networking cables and other networking equipment. Proxim Corporation’s 802.11a/b/g miniPCI module, FCC ID: HZB-C38WCW, would like to have your authorization as a limited modular approval specific to to Access Point with model name Alpha-1. The requirements of Public Notice DA00-1407 have been met and shown on the following statements. 2. “The modular transmitter must have its own RF shielding.”: The radio portion of this module has been shielded, please see exhibition External Photo. 3. “The modular transmitter must have buffered modulation/data inputs.” The EUT has buffered data inputs, it is integrated in chip AR5212. 4. “The modular transmitter must have its own power supply regulation.” The chips RF converter which will influence the frequency radiation, have to be 2.5V DC powered. The miniPCI interface provides 3.3VDC, so there are regulators in front of these chips, the part number of this regulator is LTC3406ES5. 5. “The modular transmitter must comply with the antenna requirements of section 15.203 and 15.204(C).” The EUT meets the FCC antenna requirements. The spurious emission, unique antenna connector and photo of antennas are shown in the test report. 6. "The modular transmitter must be tested in a stand-alone configuration” Due to the modular be specified to Access Point with model name Alpha-1, so the EUT was tested in the full system configuration. Please see section Photographs of Test Configuration in the test report. 7. “The modular transmitter must be labeled with its own FCC ID number.” Please see exhibition Label Sample for the FCC ID of this module. And also in the exhibition Users Manual, there are instructions give to the OEM on how to label the end product. FCC rules under Title 47CFR 15.407(d) and (e) clearly state that devices which operate in the 5.15 – 5.25 GHz band be limited to indoor use with integral antennas only. In general, this would prohibit the use of external antennas within this frequency band unless there are other measures taken to show these antennas are somehow “integral”. In addition, the use of “unique” connectors is not considered satisfactory to meet the integral antenna requirement. 2.) Please provide photographs of typical installations and conditions for all antennas 3.) The 9 parts of the Test Report total over 21 megabytes. This is far too large to be presented to the Commission. Please do your best to condense this into a more manageable form. 4.) The Manual gives no antenna installation instructions – especially critical when so many antennas are to be listed on the Grant. Please review. 5.) FYI: The 6dB bandwidth test is independent of which antenna is selected. This is usually performed as a conducted measurement. 6.) The Test Setup section for the Pout measurements does not show the detector in Section 4.4.4. Please review 7.) Your test data sheets in Section 4.4.6 for RF Pout are also confusing. If we are examining a Conducted measurement, what is the effect of the antennas? 8.) Power Spectral Density test in Section 4.5.7and 5.9.8 is also a Conducted test. There should be no effect from the antennas. 9.) FYI: Please be sure to present Pout measurements across all bit rates for 802.11b/g. 10.) Manual must clearly identify this module as limited for use in Alpha-1 access points manufactured by Proxim. Use in any other system is prohibited. 11.) Manual must also include warnings prohibiting outdoor use in the 5.15 – 5.25GHz range. 12.) Several photographs show this device with “N” connectors on the antenna leads. It is assumed that in some instances, professional installation will be required. Please provide professional installation addendums to the manual for those instances. 13.) Please identify how use for 802.11b/g will be limited to channels 1-11 for the US market. Use on channels 12 and 13 is prohibited, and no provisions are allowed for software selection of channel skew. Please advise and provide an attestation from the Applicant that all product sold in the US will be strictly limited to these legal channels. z Page 2 August 25, 2003 14.) Please note the proposed Grant Notes will specify: “Limited Modular Approval (LMA). Power Output listed is Conducted. This transmitter module is authorized only for use in Proxim model Alpha-1 access points. Use of external antennas requires professional installation, but external antennas within the 5.15-5.25 GHz band are prohibited. Professional installers within the 5.15-5.25 GHz band must adhere to the outdoor usage restrictions of 15.407(e). When Professional Installation does apply, end users must be prohibited from access to any programming parameters. The antenna used for this device must be installed to provide a separation distance of at least 20cm from all persons, and must not be co-located or operating in conjunction with any other antenna or transmitter other than that contained within this device. Users and OEM integrators must be provided with antenna installation instructions and transmitter operating conditions for satisfying RF Exposure compliance. OEM Integrators are responsible for compliance with the integral antenna requirements of 15.407(d). The OEM integrator must not provide any information to the end user regarding how to install or remove this RF module in any final product which shall utilize this module.” 1.) Please supply a separate, additional Manual which will cover only those instances when “Professional Installation” is required. This Manual must specify all the antennas, the allowable RF Pout (per Operational Description table), the allowable channels/bands for indoor and outdoor usage, and the allowable RF Exposure restrictions. It should also include instructions for changing the Pout to match the selected antennas. Failure to supply at least a Draft copy of the manual will force dismissal of the Grant. This is in addition to the usual standard, required language. 2.) Please supply an Attestation on Applicant’s letterhead showing how and in what instances “Professional Installation” will be allowed. Please note that under “Professional Installation” sales using uncontrolled retail outlets is prohibited. 3.) Please note that when “Professional Installation” is required, the end user per 15.15(c) must not be able to modify the equipment parameters in such a way that operation of the device will violate the Rules. This includes frequency bands, power output and unlawful channels. Describe in detail the measures taken to insure this shall not occur, either with physical or software lockouts, or any other means. The antennas are Omni-Directional Antenna, Patch -Directional Antenna, Directional Antenna, Directional Wide Angle Antenna, Window Antenna with UFL connector. This device is an 802.11a/b/g miniPCI module for use in Proxim model Alpha-1 access points, and operates in both the 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands. The maximum data rate could be 108Mbps in turbo mode. For more detailed instruction, please take a look at the user’s manual. FCC 15.407(c) states : The device shall automatically discontinue transmission in case of either absence of information to transmit or operational failure. These provisions are not intended to preclude the transmission of control or signaling information or the use of repetitive codes used by certain digital technologies to complete frame or burst intervals. Applicants shall include in their application for equipment authorization a description of hoe this requirement is met. Data transmission is always initiated by software, which is then pass down through the MAC, through the digital and analog baseband, and finally to the RF chip. Several special packets (ACKs, CTS, PSPoll, etc...) are initiated by the MAC. There are the only ways the digital baseband portion will turn on the RF transmitter, which it then turns off at the end of the packet. Therefore, the transmitter will be on only while one of the aforementioned packets is being transmitted. Introduction In this document, we try to prove the safety of radiation harmfulness to the human body for our product. The limit for Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) specified in FCC 1.1310 is followed. The Gain of the antenna used in this product is measured in a Fully Anechoic Chamber (FAC) calibrated for antenna measurement in ADT, and also the maximum total power input to the antenna is measured. Through the Friis transmission formula and the maximum gain of the antenna, we can calculate the distance, away from the product, where the limit of MPE is reached. Although the Friis transmission formula is a far field assumption, the calculated result of that is an over-prediction for near field power density. We will take that as the worst case to specify the safety range. 2. Classification The antenna of the product, under normal use condition, is at least 20 cm away from the body of the user. Warning statement for keeping 20cm separation distance and the prohibition of operating next to a person has been printed on the users manual. So, this product is classified as the Mobile Device.
