Install the batteries (page 2). 2. Turn on the device (page 3). 3. Acquire satellites (page 3). 4. Mark a waypoint (page 5). 5. Calibrate the compass (page 6). 6. Navigate with the search menu (page 8). 7. Navigate a route (page 8). Getting More information Go to www.garmin.com to download the latest manuals. Battery information The device operates on two AA batteries. Use alkaline, NiMH, or lithium batteries. Use precharged NiMH or lithium batteries for best results. installing the Batteries 1. Replace the battery cover. For best results, after you install new batteries, update the battery type in the system settings (page 10). Turning the Device On or Off Press and hold . Setting Your Language 1. Turn on the unit. 2. Use the Rocker to select a language. Acquiring Satellite Signals It may take 30 to 60 seconds to acquire signals. 1. Go outdoors to an open area. 2. If necessary, turn on the device. 3. Wait while the device searches for satellites. A question mark flashes while the device determines your location. 4. Quickly press to open the backlight status page. The GPS bars indicate satellite strength. When the bars are green, the device has acquired satellite signals. FinDPress FinD to open the search menu MARKPress MARK to save your current location as a waypoint. QUiTPress QUiT to cancel or return to the previous menu or page. EnTERPress EnTER to select options and acknowledge messages. MEnUPress MEnU to open the options menu for the page that is currently open. Press MEnU twice to open the main menu (from any page). PAGEPress PAGE to scroll through the main pages (page 5). RockerPress up, down, right, and left to select menu options and to move the map cursor. inPress in to zoom in on the map. OUTPress OUT to zoom out on the map. DRAFT GPSMAP 62 Series Quick Start Manual 5 waypoints Waypoints are locations you record and store in the device. Creating waypoints 1. From any page, press MARK. 2. Select Done. Editing a waypoint Before you can edit a waypoint, you must create a waypoint. 1. From the main menu, select Waypoint Manager. 2. Select a waypoint. 3. Select an attribute (such as the name or location). 4. Enter the new information. 5. Select Done. Deleting a waypoint 1. From the main menu, select Waypoint Manager. 2. Select a waypoint. 3. Press Menu. 4. Select Delete > Yes. Main Pages The information needed to operate this device is found on the following pages: map, compass, main menu, and trip computer. Map The position icon represents your location on the map. As you travel, the position icon moves and leaves a track log (trail). Waypoint names and symbols also appear on the map. Changing the Map Orientation 1. From the map, press Menu. 2. Select Setup Map > Orientation. 3. Select an orientation: • Select north up to show north at the top of the page. DRAFT 6 GPSMAP 62 Series Quick Start Manual • Select Track up to show your current direction of travel at the top of the page. • Select Automotive Mode to show a perspective view. Measuring Distance You can move the cursor around the map to measure distance from the current location. 1. From the map, press Menu. 2. Select Measure Distance. The device automatically begins measuring from your current location. 3. Move the cursor to a point you want to measure to. The distance appears at the bottom of the page. 4. Press quiT to stop measuring. Compass When navigating to a destination, the bearing pointer points to your destination, regardless of the direction you are moving. When the bearing pointer points toward the top of the electronic compass, you are traveling directly toward your destination. If it points any other direction, turn toward that direction until the arrow is pointing toward the top of the compass. Calibrating the Compass notice Calibrate the electronic compass outdoors. Do not stand near objects that influence magnetic fields, such as cars, buildings, or overhead power lines. nOTe: The three-axis compass is available only with the GPSMAP 62s and GPSMAP 62st. You should calibrate the compass after moving long distances, experiencing DRAFT GPSMAP 62 Series Quick Start Manual 7 temperature changes, or changing the batteries. 1. From the compass, press Menu. 2. Select Calibrate Compass > Start. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions. Calibrating the Barometric Altimeter nOTe: The elevation plot page is available only with the GPSMAP 62s and GPSMAP 62st. You can manually calibrate the barometric altimeter if you know the correct elevation or the correct pressure. 1. From the elevation plot, press Menu. 2. Select Calibrate Altimeter. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions. Trip Computer The trip computer displays your current speed, average speed, maximum speed, trip odometer, and other helpful statistics. Customizing Data Fields You can customize the data fields displayed on each main page. For data field descriptions, see the GPSMAP 62 Series Owner’s Manual. 1. From a main page, press Menu. 2. Select Change Data Fields. 3. Select a data field. 4. Press enTeR. About Tracks Your Garmin device records a track log while you are moving. You can save these tracks and navigate using them later. DRAFT Important Safety and Product Information WarnIng Failure to avoid the following potentially hazardous situations could result in an accident or collision resulting in death or serious injury. Installation Warnings • When installing the device in a vehicle, place the device securely so it does not obstruct the driver’s view of the road ➊ or interfere with vehicle operating controls, such as the steering wheel, foot pedals, or transmission levers. Do not place unsecured on the vehicle dashboard ➋. Do not place the device in front of or above any airbag ➌. ➋ ➌ ➊ • The windshield mount may not stay attached to the windshield in all circumstances. Do not place the mount where it will become a distraction if it should become detached. Keep your windshield clean to help ensure that the mount stays on the windshield. Off-road navigation Warnings Some Garmin recreational products are able to suggest off- road routes for various outdoor activities, such as biking, hiking, and all-terrain vehicles. Follow these guidelines to ensure safe off-road navigation. • Always use your best judgment and exercise common sense when making of f-road navigational decisions. The Garmin device is designed to provide route suggestions only. It is not a replacement for for attentiveness and proper preparation for outdoor activities. Do not follow the route suggestions if they suggest an illegal course or would put you in an unsafe situation. • Always carefully compare information displayed on the device to all available navigation sources, including trail signs, trail conditions, weather conditions, and other factors that may af fect safety while navigating. For safety, always resolve any discrepancies before continuing navigation, and defer to posted signs and conditions. • Always be mindful of the ef fects of the environment and the inherent risks of the activity before embarking on off-road activities, especially the impact that weather and weather-related trail conditions can have on the safety of your activity. Ensure that you have the proper gear and supplies for your activity before navigating along unfamiliar paths and trails. Street navigation Warnings Some Garmin recreational products are able to accept street maps and suggest routes that follow roads. Follow these guidelines to ensure safe on-road navigation. • Always use your best judgement, and operate the vehicle in a safe manner. Do not become distracted by the device while driving, and always be fully aware of all driving conditions. Minimize the amount of time spent viewing the device screen while driving. • Do not input destinations, change settings, or access any functions requiring prolonged use of the device controls while driving. Pull over in a safe and legal manner before attempting such operations. • When navigating, carefully compare information displayed on the device to all available navigation sources, including road signs, road closures, road conditions, traffic congestion, weather conditions, and other factors that may af fect safety while driving. For safety, always resolve any discrepancies before DRAFT continuing navigation, and defer to posted signs and conditions. • The device is designed to provide route suggestions. It is not a replacement for driver attentiveness and good judgement. Do not follow route suggestions if they suggest an illegal maneuver or would place the vehicle in an unsafe situation. If these guidelines are not followed, the batteries may experience a shortened life span or may present a risk of damage to the device, fire, chemical burn, electrolyte leak, and/or injury. • Do not leave the device exposed to a heat source or in a high-temperature location, such as in the sun in an unattended vehicle. To prevent damage, remove the device from the vehicle or store it out of direct sunlight, such as in the glove box. • Do not use a sharp object to remove the batteries. • Do not puncture or incinerate the device or battery . • Keep the batteries away from children. • Do not disassemble, puncture, or damage the batteries. • Only replace the battery with the correct replacement battery . Using another battery presents a risk of fire or explosion. • Replaceable coin cell batteries may contain perchlorate material. Special handling may apply . See www.dtsc.ca.gov/hazardouswaste/perchlorate. • Contact your local waste disposal department to dispose of the device/battery in accordance with applicable local laws and regulations. • In addition, the GPS device may use an internal, non- user-replaceable battery for various purposes, such as the real-time clock. Do not remove or attempt to remove the non-user-replaceable battery. Notice Windshield Mounting Legal restrictions Before using the suction cup mount on your windshield, check the state and local laws and ordinances where you drive. Some state laws prohibit drivers from using suction mounts on their windshields while operating motor vehicles. Other state laws allow the suction mount to be located only in specific locations on the windshield. Many other states have enacted restrictions against placing objects on the windshield in locations that obstruct the driver’s vision.
