The GMR 18 utilizes the performance of Garmin radar and provides overlay and color information when combined with a marine multi-function display (MFD). Use this area to record the serial number (8-digit number located on the bottom of the GMR 18) in case your GMR 18 needs service. Keep the original sales receipt, or a photocopy, in a safe place. The GMR 18 only operates with components of the Garmin Marine Network, and MFD's (mulit-function displays). See your Garmin dealer or the Garmin Web site for more details. To complete the installation, you need the appropriate fasteners, tools, and mounts. These items should be available at most marine dealers. Always wear safety goggles, ear protection, and a dust mask when drilling, cutting, or sanding. When drilling or cutting, always check fi rst to see what is on the other side of the surface. If you experience diffi culty with the installation, contact Garmin Product Support or seek the assistance of a professional installer. Installation Guidelines To maximize the performance of the radar, please observe the following installation guidelines: • An ideal scanner mounting location is high above the ship’s keel line with a minimal part of the vessel’s structure or rigging blocking the radar beam. Obstructions in the path of the radar beam may cause blind and shadow sectors, or generate false echoes. The higher the installation position, the further the scanner can detect targets. • Avoid mounting the scanner on the same level as smoke stacks, horizontal spreaders, or crosstrees on a mast. Do not install the scanner near heat sources where it may be subjected to smoke or hot air from smoke stacks or heat from lights. • The mounting surface or platform should be sturdy enough to support the weight of the scanner (15.8 lbs/7.17 kg), fl at as possible, and parallel with the vessel’s water line. • It is recommended that the radar scanner be mounted out of range of personnel (horizontal beam width above head height). When the scanner is transmitting, do not look directly at the antenna at close range, eyes are the most sensitive part of the body to electromagnetic energy. When properly installed and operated, the use of this radar conforms to the requirements of ANSI/IEEE C95.1-1992 Standard for Safety Levels with Respect to Human Exposure to Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Fields. • A “Compass Safe Distance” must be maintained between the compass and the scanner. The Compass Safe Distance is measured from the center point of the compass to the nearest point on the scanner. Standard compass = 1 m Standby Steering and Emergency compasses = 0.6 m • Mount…

Identification of any measures taken by the submitting party to prevent unauthorized disclosure: The information for which confidential treatment is sought is kept confidential by Garmin International, Inc. and not made available to third parties except pursuant to non-disclosure agreements. 7. Identification of whether the information is available to the public and the extent of any previous disclosure of the information to third parties: To the knowledge of those preparing this application, the information has not been disclosed publicly heretofore. While the general theory of operation of this equipment has been the subject of numerous disclosures in industry and standards groups as well as in rule making proceedings of the FCC, the protection sought is narrowly drawn and pertains to certain specific implementations of this radio technology. 8. Justification of the period during which the submitting party asserts that the material should not be available for public disclosure: This material should not be disclosed for at least 25 years. While improvements in design are made relatively frequently, disclosure of the design information would lead to insights into both design and manufacturing techniques that could have an adverse competitive effect for many years to come. This equipment is designed for commercial, industrial, and governmental applications. As such, unlike most consumer equipment, this equipment could be used for more than a decade in some cases. As such, it is important that the design not be made available to unauthorized persons who might attempt to use knowledge of the design to compromise the applications for which the equipment will be employed. The radiating structure for the device is typically mounted more than 270 centimeters away and located outside the crafts helm. Due to the location of the antenna, normal operating conditions, and use the unit will satisfy the requirements for RF Exposure per CFR rule 1.1311.
