BUSHNELL SPEEDSTER OPERATORS MANUAL REGULATORY STATEMENTS This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) This device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation. Any changes or modifications not expressly approved by the party responsible for compliance could void the user’s authority to operate the equipment. This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures: -Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna. -Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver. -Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected. - Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician for help. Your Bushnell® Speedster™ is a precision instrument designed to provide many years of enjoyment. This booklet will help you achieve optimum performance by explaining its adjustments and features as well as how to care for this precise speed and statistic measuring instrument. To ensure optimal performance and longevity, please read these instructions before using your Bushnell Speedster. INTRODUCTION Your Bushnell Speedster uses digital technology and DSP (Digital Signal Processing) to provide instantaneous and accurate speed measurements to +/- One Mile Per Hour (MPH) accuracy. The Bushnell Speedster is a handy, multi-functional speed gun for all kinds of sports enthusiasts. Track everything from pitching speeds to cars at the racetrack. The Bushnell Speedster measures the speed of a baseball at 10- 110 MPH from 60 feet away from the ball, and the speed of a racecar from 10-200 MPH at 650 feet away. Unlike any other speed gun available, the Speedster allows you to keep statistics for baseball and softball, and provides last and average speeds for any type of object measured. BATTERY INSTALLATION Your Bushnell Speedster operates on six AA batteries. To install, remove the battery cover (A) by depressing both sides of the handle bottom. Remove the battery cartridge (B) and install the batteries so that the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals of the batteries match the markings inside the battery cartridge. Re-insert the battery cartridge with batteries in place and then place battery cover back onto the handle. GENERAL OPERATION Your Bushnell Speedster operates on six AA batteries. Make sure they have been installed according to the instructions listed in the battery installation section. A QUICK START LESSON Your Bushnell Speedster can be turned on by pressing the POWER button on the right side of the user panel below the LCD display (See fig. 1 ). This button will turn on the unit or turn it off at any time during the operation of the Speedster. Your Bushnell Speedster can be configured for many different modes of operation. These will be described in detail in later sections of this manual. TARGET SPEED AQUISITION A target can be anything that is moving. To acquire the speed of a target, with the Speedster powered on, aim the Speedster at the target and depress the trigger. There will be a RADAR ACTIVE icon appear in the upper right corner of the LCD display. This indicates the Doppler Radar is functioning. The speed of the target will appear on the LCD display. When the speed appears, release the trigger and the last speed displayed will “lock” on the display for easy viewing. There are certain mathematical properties of Doppler Radar that affect the accuracy of your Bushnell Speedster. Please read COSINE AFFECT ON TARGET VELOCITY later in this manual. As a quick reference to accuracy, remember to keep your targets direction of travel in a direct line with you. Once it is, press ENTER. Now UNITS will be highlighted. To change from MPH to KPH, press the ↓ arrow key and KPH will appear. To move to MODE, press ENTER and then the ↓ arrow key. Once you have selected session, Units of measure, and Mode, press the PAGE button. Explanation of how disclosure of this information could result in substantial competitive harm: Disclosure would, in effect, give away the fruits of the labors of Progress Instrument’s engineering department and personnel, who have designed the equipment and manufacturing process. Disclosure would also offer competitors additional unwarranted insight into the state of the product development, thereby allowing competitors an advantage, not available to Progress Instrument. 6. Identification of any measures taken by the submitting party to prevent unauthorized disclosure: The information for which confidential treatment is ought is kept confidential by Progress Instrument. and not made available to third parties except pursuant to non-disclosure agreements. 7. Identification of whether the information is available to the public and the extent of any previous disclosure of the information to third parties: To the knowledge of those preparing this application, the information has not been disclosed publicly heretofore. While the general theory of operation of this equipment has been the subject of numerous disclosures in industry and standards groups as well as in the rule making proceedings of the FCC, the protection sought is narrowly drawn and pertains to certain specific implementations of the digital modulation technology. 8. Justification of the period during which the submitting party asserts that the material should not be available for public disclosure: This material should not be disclosed for at least 25 years. While improvements in the design are made relatively frequently, disclosure of the design information would lead to insights into both design and manufacturing techniques that could have an adverse competitive effect for many years to come. Thus, equipment is designed for commercial, industrial and governmental applications. As such, unlike most consumer equipment, this equipment will be used for more than a decade in some cases. As such, it is important that the design not be made available to unauthorized persons who might attempt to use knowledge of the design to compromise the applications for which the equipment will be employed. 9. Any other information that the party seeking confidential treatment believes may be useful in assessing whether its request for confidentiality should be granted: See item 8 above. BUSHNELL SPEEDSTER OPERATIONAL DESCRIPTION 1. UNIT DESCRIPTION –Bushnell SpeedSTER is a one piece, battery powered speed monitoring, doppler radar device that can discriminate an objects speed. The transmitter, receiver and antenna are integral to the unit. The receiver is a two-channel I/Q quadrature output. The unit transmits in the K band at 24.150 GHz +/- .1GHZ. The transmitter is a Gunn diode cavity stabilized, Continuous Wave oscillator. All received signals are digitally processed and converted to data for display or storage. Data from the SpeedSTER is digitized, object speed can be displayed and collected for analysis. 2. INTENDED PURPOSE – The SPEEDSTER is designed to be used for monitoring and data logging speed. These data are then used to provide real time visual speed prompts for sports enthusiasts and historical speed data for statistical studies. The SPEEDSTER is to be used only in stationary applications, as it is not capable of processing data while on a moving platform. 3. SETUP – The SPEEDSTER is intended for use by sports enthusiasts wishing to display and track the speed of moving objects such as baseballs. DC power is supplied to the SPEEDSTER by the onboard double a batteries. When power is applied operation is automatic and new data maybe taken by pressing the trigger. All usage is to be performed in a stationary position.
