Note: Throughout this manual, WAP and Web are used interchangeably to refer to internet services.Available servicesSome services and functions described in this user’s guide are network- or subscription-dependent. The SIM cardWhen you register as a subscriber with a network operator, you get a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card. The SIM card contains a computer chip that keeps track of your phone number, the services included in your subscription, and your phonebook information.Tip: Check if your information is saved to the SIM card before you remove it from another phone. For example, phonebook entries may be saved in the phone memory.AssemblyBefore you can use your phone you need to: • Insert the SIM card.• Attach and charge the battery. T226.book Page 3 Thursday, July 31, 2003 2:28 PM 4 Getting started SIM card and battery informationIt may take up to 30 minutes before an icon appears when charging if the battery is completely discharged. 1. Insert the SIM card. Make sure the SIM card is placed under the metal clips. 2. Place the battery on the back of the phone with the connectors facing each other (label side up). 3. Place the back cover into the bottom of the phone and slide it up until it clicks into place. 4. Connect the charger to the phone at the flash symbol. The flash symbol on the charger plug must face upwards. 5. It may take up to 30 minutes before the battery charging icon appears in the display. Wait approximately 4 hours or until the icon indicates that the battery is fully charged. If you do not see the battery icon after this time, press any key or the center select key to activate the display. The display will “sleep” during charging. 6. Remove the charger by tilting the plug upwards.Note: You have to insert the SIM card and charge the battery before you can use the phone. While speaking into the mouthpiece, angle the phone up and over your shoulder.Internal AntennaYour phone is equipped with an internal antenna. For best reception, try to hold your phone so your hand does not cover the internal antenna.The antenna is located on the back of the phone above the back cover.Turning On the PhonePress and hold NO until you hear a tone. Enter your PIN (Personal Identity Number), if you have one for your SIM card.Your PIN is provided by your network operator. If you make a mistake while entering your PIN, delete the wrong number by pressing . Applicant: Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB Correspondence Reference Number: 9579 731 Confirmation Number: TC233827 Date of Original Email: 10/07/2003 Sony Ericsson Model: T226s FCC ID: PY7A1041012 This document provides additional details on how this is accomplished. 2 IMPLEMENTATION The T226s is a derivation of model T226 (FCC ID = PY7A1041011) in which the 850 MHz band of operation is disabled by means of a software switch. In both of these models, a variable located in a protected area of non-volatile memory defines the allowable bands of operation. All software processes use this variable to determine frequencies that may be used for scanning, system selection and registration, call origination and call handoffs. This variable is programmed at the factory during assembly in the same step as the model number, and is subsequently accessed as READ only. 3 SECURITY The parameter defining allowable bands of operation is located in a protected area of non-volatile memory. In general, only Sony Ericsson approved factories, service centers, or trusted customer sites have the necessary tools to modify the parameter areas of non-volatile memory. Since the variable resides in a protected area, WRITE access is further restricted. Any change in this location without the proper security tools and valid access to a Sony Ericsson security server would render the phone inoperative.
