Page 3 BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON NETWORKING Computers are assigned IP addresses by network operators, which have two methods available, static or dynamic IP addressing. The user of this document will need to understand how IP addressing is done at their particular location. All Cyclone radio products (Subscriber Modules, Access Point Modules, and Backhaul Modules) have the default IP address of 169.254.1.1. For a computer to talk to Cyclone, as it comes from the factory, either of the following conditions must be met: If the computer is not configured for DHCP, then it has to have a static IP address on the 169.254 network (i.e. 169.254.1.5) If the computer is configured for DHCP, then it will automatically obtain an IP address on the 169.254 network after minute or two as long as it is not connected to the network. SITE SELECTION CRITERIA There are various issues that need to be taken into consideration when choosing a location for the network infrastructure. The following is a list of those considerations. There may be others as each site is unique. Height is essential when installing a Cyclone backhaul module. The Cyclone backhaul module must be mounted higher than other objects located immediately around it such as trees, buildings, tower legs, etc. There should be no obstructions that will interfere with the unit’s internal antenna. The area immediately in front of an access point module must be clear of all obstructions. Will the installation area change in the future? Will there be structures high enough to interfere with the signal? Will trees grow into the line-of-sight path? When possible, avoid high RF energy sites. Do not place Cyclone equipment in the same plane as other RF equipment. The means used by the installer to attach the backhaul module to the tower, rooftop, or pole should be rigid and should not move or flex due to wind or other vibrations. Tower availability...will a tower have to erected? There must be grounding systems available for protection of the Cyclone equipment. Lighting arrestors are required in installation areas to transport lightning strikes away from equipment. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS Fresnel Loss - The Fresnel Zone is a theoretical area around the line of sight of an antenna transmission that can affect the signal strength. Objects that penetrate the Fresnel Zone can cause fading of the transmitted signal. This fading is caused by the cancellation of the signal due to out-of-phase reflections. An unobstructed li…

Page 1 of 16 CANOPY 5700ISM Radiated Test Testing for Compliance wi th FCC Part 15.247 when Op erated in the ISM Band 9 April 2003 Compliance testing with FCC rules part 15.247 was performed in radiated fashion since production CANOPY units have no RF connec tor. A test fixture was used to make power sp ectral density, maximum output power, and occ upied bandwidth measurements. A reference antenna replacing the UUT calibrate d the coupling factor for the test fixture. Measurements were made on CANOPY unit serial #0A003EF01D36. The test setup diagram is as follows: MEASURINGRECEIVER LO RF BB CANOPY TEST FIXTURE COMPUTER UUT POWER METER SPECTRUM ANALYZER GPIB INTERFACE SIGNAL GENERATOR SIGNAL GENERATOR COUPLER SCOPE 1234 DET SIGNAL GENERATOR POWERDIV POWER DIV POWERCOMB LOAD PAD PAD PAD PAD Page 2 of 16 Spectrum Analyzer Reference Level Calibration The silent carrier power at all test frequencies was normalized (via the RF attenua tor pads in the test station) to 0dBm in the analyzer plots. The dBm units in the plots can be translated to dBc. TX bit error test pattern wa s initiated at maximum transmit duty cycle an d data throughput for the radio under test. This will result in 97.7% duty cycle or an average power versus maximum power ratio of -0 .10dB. Page 3 of 16 15.247c. Band Edge Requirements The following plot shows that the CANOPY radio produces an acceptable out-of-band spect ral output when operated at the channel limits of 5735MHz at the lowest frequency, and 5840MHz at the highest frequency. The display line indicated the –20d B specification limi t for non- restricted out-of-ba nd spectral emissions. 2-Level FSK – 10Mb Signaling Page 4 of 16 4-Level FSK – 20Mb Signaling The test results indicated that the band-e dge spectral emissions were more than 20dB below the in-band power for both 2FSK and 4FSK modulation modes. The carrier freq uencies tested were 5735 and 5840MHz. Page 5 of 16 15.247d. Conducted Peak Power Spectral Density The plots showed below display the peak power spectral density results for the radi o operation in the frequency band 5725-5850M Hz. The carrier power (translated to a conducted measurement) at the antenna port was 22.6dBm maximum at 5735MHz. At 5785MHz the carri er power was 22.2dBm and 5840MHz the carrier power was 22.4dBm. The specification limit for this unit under test in the plots sho wn below was –14.6dBc (8dBm). 2-Level FSK – 10Mb Signaling 2FSK Modulation Results: The maximum peak power spectral density when measured in a 3kHz resolution bandwidth was –18.51dBc (3.89dBm) at the uppermost operating frequency of 5840MHz. At 5785MHz the maximum peak pow er spectral density was measured to be –18.58dBc (3.62dBm). Th e maximum peak power spectral density was measured to be -18.73dBc (3.87dBm) at the lowest operating frequency of 5735MHz. Page 6 of 16 4-Level FSK – 20Mb Signaling 4FSK Modulation Results: The maximum peak power spectral density when measured in a 3kHz resolution bandwidth was –18.81dBc (3.59dBm) at the uppermost operating frequency of 5840MHz. At 5785MHz the maximum peak pow er spectral density was measured to be –20.36dBc (1.84dBm). At the lowest operating frequency, 5735MHz the maximum peak pow er spectral density was meas ured to be –20.58dBc (2.02dBm). Page 7 of 16 CANOPY 5700ISM Radiated Test Testing for Compliance wi th FCC Part 15.209 when Op erated in the ISM Band 13 February 2003 A CANOPY 5700 ISM unit, serial #0A003EF01D36, was tested outdoors to check compliance with FCC requirement 15.209, restricted band emissions for ISM data-modulated radios. As the CANOPY ra dio is already type-approved fo r U-NII band operation, the tests performed here were limited to measurements of transmit harmonic energy and ISM transmit spectral mask. The testing was done using a model 3115 and a model 3116 calibrated dual-ridged waveguide-horn ante nnas manufactured by EMCO, I nc., an Agilent 8564EC 40GHz spectrum analyzer, an d a laptop to control the DUT and take data from the spectrum analyzer. The two a ntennas combined allowed a frequency measurement range of 1GHz to 40GHz . The spatial separation between the EMCO horn antennas and the DUT was maintained at 1 or 3 meters during the test. The FCC requirement for restricted band emi ssions is stated in terms of field strength at 500uV/m at a distance of 3 meters. U sing the free space impedance of 377 ohms, the equivalent power density is –61.78dBm/m 2 . This power density number was used as the pass/fail criteria for the test. Cable losses, antenna gains, and other correction factors were entered into an Excel spreadsheet along with the results of the testing. To calculate the power density at the horn antennas, the power level received by the an tenna is offset by the log ratio of the effective aperture of the antenna to one square meter. The calculation of the effective aperture is done using: A em = e cd ( Ξ» 2 /4 Ο€ )D o, D o is the directivity of the antenna, e cd is the efficiency, and Ξ» is the wavelength of the frequenc y under observation. In the equation, e cd and D o may be replaced by the numeric gain of the antenna. Using th e calibration data from the manuf acturer, the effective area of t he antenna was computed for each measurement frequency and the appropriate dB correction factor applied. The test antennas and test radio were mount ed on adjustable tripods and placed 1 or 3 meters apart, depending on the measuremen t antenna type. Page 8 of 16 The test setup diagram is as follows: Two different antennas were used, an EM CO model 3115 ridged-waveguide horn antenna c overing the 1 to 18GHz frequency range, and an EMCO model 3116 ridged-waveguide horn antenna covering the 18 to 40GHz frequency range. The model 3116 measurement antenna is calibrated for a 1-meter measurement distance, the model 3115 for a 3-meter distance. The radio has a CW mode for testing purposes and was used to measure the harmonic leve ls radiated from the radio. In normal mo de operation, the modulated …
