For each antenna, a surge protective device meeting IEC 61000-4- 5, Level 4 or IEEE C 62.41 A3/B3 requirements must be used to prevent potential damage from very high surges (for example, surges caused by lightning). Do not operate your wireless network device near unshielded blasting caps or in an explosive environment. You must ALWAYS install an external grounding wire on the OWS product. The ground connection must be complete before connecting power to the OWS enclosure—a simple continuity check between the enclosure and the ground termination point can confirm this. Access / One ® Network Welcome to Access/One Network21 1 ◗RADIUS Accounting Through a wireless interface, Access/One Network supports RFC 2866 standard RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service) accounting, allowing customers with existing RAS Radius-parsing scripts/tools to leverage their investment as well as customize their tools to extract all available statistical information. ◗Syslog Support Access/One Network offers comprehensive Syslog (system logging) functionality, including the ability to monitor Syslog events. Logged events can be sent to multiple Syslog servers, though using more than one server can impact the system’s performance. ◗VirtualStrix Access/One Network nodes support the 802.1Q VLAN tagging of wireless frames based on SSID or station MAC address. This is achieved by assigning a specific VLAN number and priority level to each frame generated by a particular station. Nodes support up to 16 simultaneous SSIDs and users can enable or suppress the broadcasting of SSID information. Security parameters can be applied for each SSID tied to a VLAN definition, including Open, 802.1x (WEP) and WPA for authentication, and Clear, WEP, TKIP and AES for encryption. During 802.1x authentication, VLAN information is retrieved from the RADIUS server and applied on a per-station basis. ◗Zero Configuration Networking In the absence of a DHCP server, Strix modules will automatically select unique IP addresses, enabling users to statically configure the modules and manage the Strix network (IP gateway, DNS server or DHCP server IP addresses must be properly configured). Access / One ® Network 22Welcome to Access/One Network 1 Wireless ◗Active WLAN Associations Each radio can support 128 WLAN associations, with the OWS dual radio able to support 256 WLAN associations (128 x 802.11a and 128 x 802.11g). ◗Channel Coordination To prevent conflicting channel assignments, each radio within an IWS or OWS product coordinates channel selection with any neighboring radios running the same technology (802.11g or 802.11a). ◗Super G™ Access/One Network supports Super G technology offering data rates up to 108Mbps, compatible with the 802.11g (54 Mbps) wireless technology. ◗Wi-Fi Channel List Specific Wi-Fi channels (or a set of channels) can be defined that will be scanned for AP and backhaul operation. ◗Wi-Fi Client Query This feature provides the option of querying the network in search of Wi-Fi clients, based on a matching MAC address or any client showing an RSSI value less than -85 dBm. Query results are displayed in a table that can be sorted by the user. Hardware Specifications Data sheets contain the most up-to-date specifications for the Strix family of Indoor Wireless System (IWS) and Outdoor Wireless System (OWS) products. Access / One ® Network Getting Started23 2 Getting Started This chapter defines the prerequisites for deploying your Access/One Network and instructions for how to install the Manager/One plug-in. Host Network Requirements Your Access/One Network requires the presence of several network servers and services in the host wired network, including: ◗DHCP Server (see also “Non-DHCP Server Environment” on page 25) ◗FTP Server ◗Internet Browser (Internet Explorer, version 6.0 and above) DHCP Server A DHCP server is necessary to distribute IP addresses and ancillary information to your Access/One Network. Many routers contain DHCP servers and allow the specification of DHCP options necessary to provide network information that would otherwise be configured manually. Strix recommends that each module is given a DHCP reservation allowing it to obtain the same IP address whenever it’s required. The reservation is based on MAC address and may allow system administrators to specify options unique to a module as well as a network. Because modules within Access/One Network change their addresses frequently (due to the network’s dynamic self-configuration capability), the DHCP server must support IP address persistence. Without IP address persistence different addresses will be assigned every time, resulting in invalid self-configurations and network topologies. Access / One ® Network 24Getting Started 2 To prevent any interruption in service, the DHCP lease time should be set to infinite whenever possible, though Strix recommends configuring a reservation for each Access/One Network module regardless of the lease time. Doing so will avoid any unanticipated problems and maintain management consistency. All modules within your Access/One Network require the following RFC 2132 option numbers to be specified: Examples of DHCP servers include (but are not limited to): ◗Windows 200X Server ◗Cisco IOS ◗Linux ◗Sun OS OptionTitleDescription 1Subnet MaskNetwork subnet mask, as applied to the given IP address. 2Time OffsetNumber of hours the DHCP client will add or subtract from SNTP time. 3Default RouterSpecifies the default gateway for this network segment. 6DNS ServerSpecifies one or two DNS servers (by priority). 12Host NameSpecifies the unique system name of the module. 15Domain NameSpecifies the domain name for this network. This is used to fully qualify any hostname operations that the module may generate (for example, ping node1 = ping node1.strixsystems.com). This applies to module operations only and does not affect users. 42NTP ServerSpecifies the NTP server IP address (local or Internet). Access / One ® Network Getting Started25 2 Non-DHCP Server Environment In the absence of a DHCP server, Strix modules utilize zero configuration networking protocols to allocate IP addresses. In this case, modules will automatically select unique and non-conflicting IP addresses, enabling users to statically configure the modules and manage the Strix network effectively. Access / One ® Network 68Managing the Network 5 Commands Clicking on Commands in Manager/One’s toolbar generates a pull-down menu containing all the commands that are available within the Manage function. Load Firmware on Network This command allows you to load a new firmware image to each of the modules contained in all network nodes within your Access/One Network. However, before you can load a new image, your FTP server parameters must be established correctly to let Manager/One know where to locate the new image (BIN) file. To establish the correct FTP parameters and load new firmware at the network level, go to “Updating the Firmware” on page 35. Reboot Network This command reboots each module in all of the nodes within your Access/One Network. Rebooting is required when network-level configuration changes are made or a new firmware image is loaded. To monitor the progress of the reboot operation, the network server generates the request in stages. When each module reports receiving the reboot command and successfully reboots, the network server performs a final self-reboot. You can monitor reboot progress reports with the View Action Status command. Whenever you initiate the Reboot Network command, the system warns you that this action will affect multiple devices on the network and asks you to confirm the request. If you want to proceed, click on the OK button to initiate the reboot process, otherwise click on the Cancel button to abort the command. See also, “Important Note About Rebooting” on page 4. Update Node Names This command must be executed at the node level. Go to “Update Node Names” on page 128. Access / One ® Network Managing the Network69 5 Update Network Membership This command must be executed at the subnet level. Go to “Update Network Membership” on page 69. Transfer System Files This command allows you to transfer network (cloud) or device (module) configuration files between the network and your assigned FTP server. This is a useful tool if you want to backup or restore configuration files. However, before executing this command your FTP server parameters must be set up correctly using the Firmware Updates command. When you choose the Transfer System Files command, Manager/One presents you with options to upload configuration files from their source on the network (either cloud or device) to your FTP server, or download configuration files from your FTP server to their source. Figure 52. Transferring System Files Select either Device Configuration File or Cloud Configuration File from the pull- down list then click on the Download/Upload button to define the action you want to initiate. If you need to reset your FTP parameters, click on the FTP Server: button, otherwise click on the Execute button. When asked to confirm the action, click on the OK button to begin transferring files, or click on the Cancel button to abort the command. Access / One ® Network 70Managing the Network 5 Remote Network Server This command allows to you include or exclude remote network servers. Include Choose this command to include a remote network server within your Access/One Network—a static network server must be specified in Network Topology before executing this command. When prompted, enter the IP address of the server you want to include then click on the OK button. Figure 53. Including Remote Servers Exclude Choose this command to exclude a remote network server from your Access/One Network—you can only exclude a server that is already included in your network. When prompted, enter the IP address of the server you want to exclude then click on the OK button. Figure 54. Excluding Remote Servers Access / One ® Network Managing the Network71 5 The Configure Function This function provides you with the tools you need to configure your Access/One Network at the network level and includes the following commands: ◗System •User Login •Network Management –General –SNMP –Trusted IP Addresses •TCP/IP Settings •Network Topology •Priority/One - Class of Service •Radius Accounting •Syslog •Date and Time •Operating Environment •Firmware Updates ◗Wi-Fi •Radio Parameters •Client Connect •Network Connect •Rogue Scan System This area of Manager/One contains the primary configuration commands for your Access/One Network in the system environment. Any commands executed here are automatically propagated across the network, so make sure the changes you initiate are changes that you want to apply to the entire network, otherwise go to “Managing Subnets and Nodes” on page 125 or “Managing Modules” on page 131. Access / One ® Network 72Managing the Network 5 User Login This command displays the User Management window, allowing you to change the login password for users and enable/disable password encryption. A valid user name is required to access the Web server interface within the network server module. ◗Password Enter a meaningful password (between 5 and 32 characters) that you are likely to remember. Access / One ® Network Managing the Network113 5 The Inventory Function This function provides you with an inventory view of your Access/One Network and includes the following commands: ◗Print Friendly Format ◗Export to CSV The inventory list is displayed in a tree structure that can be expanded (default) or collapsed (show nodes only). The structure of the list consists of the Node ID, its serial number and name, IP address and MAC address, the node type, the technology it uses, and the current firmware version it is running. To compliment full two-way authentication, the inventory list is synchronized and maintained between all Strix devices. See also “Inventory or Auto Discovered” on page 63. Figure 86. Inventory List Manual additions (by node serial number) Unreachable devices are listed here Access / One ® Network 114Managing the Network 5 The inventory list allows you to manually add nodes, at your discretion. To add a node to the inventory list, enter the node’s serial number in the Node ID field then click on the Add button. Nodes that cannot be detected by the network will appear in the Unreachable Devices frame. You also have the option of manually deleting nodes from the inventory list. To delete a node, simply click on the X icon next to the node you want to delete. The system will then prompt you for a confirmation. Click on the OK button to delete the selected node, or click on the Cancel button to cancel your request. Figure 87. Deleting a Node from the Inventory List Print Friendly Format This option converts the inventory list into a printer friendly format that can be printed on standard letter size paper. After converting the inventory list, the system prompts you for your printer’s destination. To initiate the printing process, click on the Print button. Figure 88. Printing the Inventory List The node’s alphanumeric serial number is case-sensitive, with all alpha characters being upper case. Access / One ® Network Managing the Network115 5 Export to CSV This option allows you to export the inventory file to a CSV (Comma Separated Values) format that can be edited within a compatible spreadsheet application, such as Microsoft Excel®. CSV File Importing the CSV File to an Excel Spreadsheet When the CSV file is created, use the following procedure to import the file into an Excel spreadsheet for editing. 1.Click in the header of the CSV file to make the CSV window active. 2.PressCtrl+A to select all text in the CSV file. 3.PressCtrl+C to copy the selected text to the clipboard. 4.Open a new Excel workbook, then press Ctrl+V to paste the CSV text into a cell in the workbook. 5.Go to Data in the Excel menu bar and choose Tex t t o C o l u m n s . . . from the pull-down list. 6.On the first page of the wizard in Excel select the Delimited option, then click on the Next button. 7.On the second page of the wizard check the Comma check box to enable the conversion with comma delimiters. 8.On the third and last page of the wizard, click on the Finish button to convert the raw text into editable columns. AP Monitor The AP Monitor provides a snapshot in table form of all active Client Connect devices on a selected subnet. Figure 90. AP Monitor (Default View) Access / One ® Network Managing the Network117 5 The table displayed in the AP Monitor window can be customized to show a defined number of entries in the table, and the table can be sorted in either ascending or descending order based on any selected column. For example, if you want to sort the table by channel, click in the column header for Channel—the table is then sorted according to the channels used by the Client Connects. The target subnet can also be changed by selecting another subnet (as long as the subnet exists in the pull-down list). In addition, the table offers instant access to the assigned BSSID information for each node and you can log in to any node by simply clicking on its IP address (all links are underlined). Figure 91. An Overview of Monitor Tables (AP Monitor) To define how the table is sorted, simply click in a column header to toggle between ascending or descending for the data in that column to become the primary sort criteria. The data in the AP Monitor table can be refreshed at any time. For information about how to define the sort criteria within the Network Connect Monitor table, see Figure 91. The only difference in the navigational content between the Network Connect Monitor and the AP Monitor is the Network Connect Monitor also includes an information button (i) in the top right corner of the window. Clicking on this button generates the RSSI Legend pop-up window that provides a reference for the icons displayed in the RSSI (dBm) column. Figure 93.
