Regulatory Statements Industry Canada Notice to Users Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) This device may not cause interference and (2) This device must accept any interference, including interference that may cause undesired operation of the device. See RSS-GEN 7.1.5 FCC Notice to Users Magna Systems has not approved any changes or modifications to the ThermoSpyder made by the user. Antenna modification, antenna replacement or use of an antenna not approved by Magna Systems is not authorized. Any changes or modifications could void the user’s authority to operate this equipment. This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures: • Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna. • Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver. • Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected. • Consult the dealer or an experienced radio / TV technician for help. Rev. A iii Important Safety Information Exposure to Radio Frequency (RF) Energy The GateWay contains a radio transmitter and receiver. Whenever powered, the GateWay will receive and emit radio frequency energy. The GateWay is designed to comply with local regulatory requirements including those concerned with the exposure of human beings to RF energy. Explosive Environments DO NOT USE THE GateWay IN EXPLOSIVE ENVIRONMENTS Areas with potentially explosive atmospheres are often, but not always, posted. Such areas may include, but are not limited to, fueling areas, enclosed areas where fumes may accumulate (such as below decks on boats or areas near poorly ventilated gas powered appliances), chemical transfer or storage areas, laboratories and areas when there are airborne particulates such as grain, dust, aerosolized paints or fine metal powders. DO NOT USE THE GateWay IN SUCH AREAS. The installation or removal of batteries may cause sparks which could cause an explosion or fire. Not Vacuum Compatible The GateWay is not vacuum compatible. Do not use the GateWay in vacuum as this could damage the GateWay and / or contaminate your vacuum chamber and associated hardware. Rev. The transceiver is a true single-chip RF communications solution which requires a minimum number of external components. Communications and control of the transceiver is affected via digital interface signals from the microcontroller unit (MCU). A block diagram of the radio frequency section is shown below. RADIO FREQUENCY SECTION BLOCK DIAGRAM MCU USB 2.0 COMPLIANT INTERFACE Flash Memory Real Time Clock Radio Transceiver USB I/F LED Status Indicator RX Output Matching Network Single-Chip Radio Transceiver CC1020 Input Matching Network Digital Control Interface Digital Data Interface TX Tx / Rx Switch ANT 14.7456 MHz Crystal Page 3 of 3 Output matching is accomplished with a π-type network which provides an impedance match at the fundamental frequency and harmonics. The use of a transmit / receive switch reduces power consumption during transmission at high output power levels and also improved receiver sensitivity. The switch is controlled by digital signals from the transceiver chip. The simplified transceiver block diagram is reproduced from the manufacturer’s datasheet. The manufacturer’s datasheet provides a discussion of the architecture and features of the transceiver as well as instructions for design of circuitry and operation of devices utilizing the CC1020. The GateWay is designed to function as a wireless network access point providing communications and network management functionality. The GateWay is only able to be used with Magna Systems’ DataLink application program. The GateWay uses the USB interface for both communications and power. When the USB connection is established, the GateWay executes power-on diagnostics and then acts as a radiofrequency link between DataLink and the radio network. DataLink issues network management commands and communicates with networked devices via the GateWay. The GateWay’s indicator LEDs provide visual indicators of network status during operation.
