Your Device is designed to let you to read, watch videos, listen to music, play games, run apps, browse the Internet, and stay connected–all on one device. This short, informative guide will familiarize you with many Device features, and can generally be read in less than 15 minutes. Additional help is available on the Device Support website at [INCLUDE URL]. -2- Prior to using your Device Before you use your Device, do the following: Charge the battery Unlock your Device The following sections walk you through the above actions in addition to providing information about the Devic e interface. Charging the ba ttery To charge your Device, connect it to a power outlet using the included power adapter. The indicator light on the bottom edge of the device will turn amber while charging and green when the battery is fully charged. When your Device is on, a lightning bolt will appear on the battery indi cator at the top of the screen. If the indicator light does not turn green, make sure that the power cable is full y inserted into your Device and that the power adapter is securely inserted into the power outlet. If your Device is still not charging, try another electrical outlet. Fully charging your Device should take 4 hours. When fully charged, the battery indicator will appear filled. Unlocking your Device To unlock your Device, press the power button to wake it up and display the unlock screen, then press the orange ribbon and swipe your finger to the left across the screen. Setting up & registering your Device If you’re reading this guide, you’ve probably completed the Device setup process. This includes connecting to a Wi-Fi network and registering your Device to a Company account. If your W i-Fi is not connected, [DESCRIBE] To verify that your Device is registered and ready to use, [DESCRIBE]. To register, [DESCRIBE] -3- Basics Speakers: The top edge of your Device contains stereo speakers for audio content. Headphone jack: Plug in headphones or your own external speakers. Plugging in headphones or external speakers will turn off the built-in speakers. Micro-USB/power port: To charge your Device from a power outlet, connect it to a power outlet using the included power adapter. You can use a USB cable (not included) to connect your Device to a computer for transferring files. Power button: To turn on your Device, press the power button. To put your Device in sleep mode, press and release the power button. If you need to turn off the Device completely, such as when traveling on an airplane, press and hold the power button for seven seconds until the screen goes blank. If your Device does not power on or is unresponsive during use, you can do a hard restart by pr essing and holding the power button for 20 seconds. The power button has a charge indicator light that is amber when your Device is charging and will turn off when the battery is fully charged. Touchscreen actions Your Device features a touchscreen interface that allows you to perform many tasks with a few gestures. To select an item, simply tap it. To turn a page or advance through your content libraries, simply swipe your finger left or right. Swipe your finger up or down to navigate your content. -4- Chapter 1 The Device Interface Status Bar The Device Status Bar is located at the top of the screen and displays the Home icon, Quick Settings icon, Wi-Fi indicator, battery indicator, and the time. Home Button: Tap the Home button from anywhere on your Device to return to the Home screen. Notifications: Messages generated by games and applications. You can select a sound to alert you of incoming notifications in Settings. Quick Settings: Select to display settings for the most commonly performed tasks including, locking and unlocking your Device’s screen rotation, adjusting volume, setting display brightness, accessing Wi-Fi settings, and syncing. Tap the More to bring up more Device Settings. Wi-Fi Indicator: The number of bands represents the strength of the Wi-Fi signal at your current location. Battery Indicator: The degree to which the battery is filled represents the remaining charge in the battery. Searching The search field is located at the top the Home screen and content pages. Tap the search field to bring up the onscree n keyboard. After you enter your search criteria, tap the Search key on the keyboard. You can enter a letter in the search field, and search for content beginning with that letter. Tabs Tabs on the Home screen represent the major content types: Books, Newsstand, Docs, Music, Video, and Web. Select a tab to view all of the stored content in that category either on the device or in the cloud. For example, selecting Newsstand displays all magazines and newspapers including individual issues and subscriptions. -5- Content is displayed on “shelves” in either a grid or list view for books, newsstand, docs, and web. To scroll, drag your finger anywhere in the content item. To quick scroll, flick your finger. To sort content, tap and release the sort control menu. Sorting options differ depending upon content type. For example, you can sort your books by most recent (default), author, or title. Home Screen The Home screen contains all of the content on your device in a home screen view. To advance the home screeen, swipe your finger across the screen. Each item will appear once in the home screeen. An item’s position is determined by when it was most recently accessed. Newly purchased items are marked with a “New” badge. Favorites You can designate any item on your Device as a Favorite. Favorites are located below the home screen, and can be added in two ways: Tap and hold to drag an item from the home screen to the Favorites section.
