The data presented was taken from laboratory tests performed on a production transmitter system designed to transmit in the frequency range of 470-806 MHz at up to 300.0 Watts average power in digital mode and utilized for operation in the UHF bands under FCC Rule Part 74. The transmitter system design and test data reflect operation and performance pursuant to the rules as prescribed in Part 74 of the Commission’s Rules. 2.0 CERTIFICATION OF DATA I certify that the testing procedures and the accumulated test data contained in this report have been personally supervised by me, and that the test results are true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief. __________________ James A. Figure 4-1: Test Setup for Digital Power Measurement Method of Measurement: The TTHDU-250, modulated with a ATSC compliant 8VSB modulator, was adjusted to obtain a 300 Watt average channel power (54.75 dBm) measurement on the spectrum analyzer at the output of the mask filter. The metering circuit was adjusted to obtain a 100% reading on the forward power meter. With the transmitter properly configured for digital operation and the average power set to 300 Watts, all required tests were performed and the digital operation test data recorded in the following sections of the test report. The results of the digital power measurement test are shown in Figure 4-2. Figure 4-2: Digital Power Measurement Test Application For FCC Certification BMTTTHDU250-Test Report Page 5 4.2 MODULATION CHARACTERISTICS 4.2.1 Digital Modulation Characteristics 4.2.1.1 Description of 8-VSB Digital Modulation 8-VSB is the RF modulation format utilized by the ATSC digital television standard to transmit digital bits over the airways to the home consumer. Since any terrestrial TV system must overcome numerous channel impairments such as ghosts, noise bursts, signal fades, and interference in order to reach the home viewer, the selection of the right RF modulation format is critical. Being one of the most crucial aspects of the DTV system, the 8-VSB format has received a great deal of attention and scrutiny recently. There are two fundamental technologies when describing the complete DTV system: 8-VSB and MPEG-2. 8-VSB is the RF modulation format and MPEG-2 is the video compression/packetization format. To convert high definition video into a form suitable for over-the-air broadcast, according to ATSC standards, two stages of processing are needed: MPEG-2 encoding and 8-VSB modulation. Accordingly, two major pieces of equipment are required: an MPEG-2 encoder and an 8-VSB modulator. The MPEG-2 encoder accepts the baseband digital video and performs bit rate compression using the techniques…
