Operational Description

Functional Operation The Seeker Hand Held Reader and Tags are designed to provide a simple and low cost RFID system. A commercially available Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) and a custom transceiver card will comprise a Hand Held Reader. The Hand Held Reader has the ability to display through a custom graphical user interface (GUI) the tags in its immediate vicinity. The custom receiver card receives a signal from the tags on an internationally recognized frequency of 433 MHz. The Hand Held Reader is used to “search” an area for “tags” which are attached to various pieces of equipment. The tag is programmed with two ‘3-digit’ codes and attached to the equipment to be tracked. The tag will audibly ‘chirp’ and broadcast its code in response to the proper signal from the reader to both identify and determine tag status. The primary use for the Seeker is finding assets within a hospital environment. In this application the reader is used to determine if an individual tag is within the range of the reader, thus creating a simple finder application. Another possibility for use is in inventorying assets. The Hand Held Reader applications could include inventorying tags in lumberyards or utility storage areas. The driver of a vehicle could drive through the lot and create an inventory through the reader. The reader would integrate with the PinPoint Mobile Resource Manager (MRM) through its sync cradle. When the user returns from the field they would place the PDA in its cradle and the data it most recently acquired would be downloaded into the MRM database. The MRM integration would also include the ability to enter tag information through the MRM Tag Builder application and have tag information uploaded to the PDA.

RF Exposure Info

RF Exposure Exhibit for RF Technologies KXU-SEEK01 RFID Tag Since the EUT only transmits when it receives a signal from the Hand Held Unit, during normal operation the user would not be touching the Seeker Tag. There are no buttons on the device to make it transmit. This means a distance of at least 20 centimeters is normally maintained between the transmitter’s radiating structure and the body of the user or nearby persons. Therefore, this device is classified under section 2.1091 as a “mobile” device. Although this device is categorically excluded from RF exposure evaluation under Part 2, it can be shown that the device meets the limits used for evaluating other devices (those which are not excluded) under this section. Section 2.1091 for mobile devices state that the limits are given in 1.1310. The limit given in 1.1310 for general population/uncontrolled at 433.9164 MHz is a Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) limit of (f/1500) mW/cm 2 . For 433.9164 MHz this limit is 0.2893 mW/cm 2 . The FCC OET Bulletin 65 Section 2 can be used to determine compliance with guidelines for human exposure to RF radiation. We will use equation 3 of that section for predicting RF fields. The highest power measurement for this device is -25.8 dBm. For this prediction we will use a worst-case power of –25 dBm or .003 nW. Since the device is “mobile”, we will use a worst-case distance of 20 cm. For worst-case antenna gain, we will use a gain of one. Using equation 3 of OET Bulletin 65 Section 2, the power density is calculated to be 0.000000629 mW/cm 2 . This is well within the limit given in 1.1310.
