Tags appear and disappear during consecutive searches from the same area •Certain Tags may be just outside of the consistent read range of the mobile reader. The environment may also affect the consistency of searches. Metal walls and other construction materials can adversely affect the read range of searches. Getting the Tag to sound or flash •The beeper and light are controlled by checkboxes on the Find Tags window. Make sure the correct selections are made before performing a search. Selecting the correct communications port In most cases the Seeker application will detect the Plug and Play ID of the RF Reader and configure it for the correct communications port. If the application can not find the RF Reader it is possible to manually configure the communications port. Open the Settings window. In the Communication Port box, select a Comm Port ID. Attempt to perform a Find operation from the Find Tags window. Check the status of the RF Reader LED to determine if the application is communicating with the card. Repeat until the correct port is identified. 4 25 Troubleshooting Use the following Troubleshooting tips. If the Pocket PC application no longer responds •Reboot the Pocket PC with a hard-reset. Typically a hard-reset can be performed by pressing a recessed reset button on the Pocket PC. Consult the Pocket PC user manual for the location of the reset button. •It is also possible that the battery is nearing expiration in the mobile reader. Consult the Pocket PC user Manual for details on replacing or recharging the battery. •The RF Reader may have come loose in the socket. Remove and reinsert the RF Reader in the compact flash socket. If the Pocket PC does not communicate with the MRM Services •Make sure that the host name and port are properly entered on the Settings Services tab. Make sure that the services are running on their respective host machines. If the application starts reacting slowly •The history table may be too large to provide adequate performance. Check the number of entries in the history table by opening the Settings window. If the number of entries is over 10,000 entries you may want to Clear History. Viewing and analyzing data on another machine •The history table can be exported to a Comma Separated Values (CSV) file. This file can then be viewed by spreadsheet applications such as Microsoft Excel. To export a CSV file open the Settings window. Click Export History. A save file dialog appears. Save the file to a known location. Retrieve the file through the sync cradle and Microsoft Active-Sync application explorer. See the Pocket PC documentation for details on using Active-Sync. Here are the answers to your questions regarding these filings. Q: First, control software is part of the PDA...However control software must be written to require manual interaction each time and that it is limited to 5 seconds. For instance, the PDA should not have automatic polling or retries (i.e. every 30 seconds) or it violates 15.231 requirements because of transmitting in predetermined intervals. Basically, each 5 second period the FCC considers must be started by a new event.. Information regarding the control software should document the control of this device and insure it meets these requirements. A: [Gregg Haensgen] There is no automatic polling or retries that are not initiated by the user pressing the poll button. The polling length is never even close to 5 seconds either. Q: Additionally, the manual mentions write/erase/program features I didn't notice before. In the past these were not really considered control signals. We have not received any recent interpretations, but generally these should be subject to 15.231(e) unless a new interpretation is provided A: [Gregg Haensgen] The write and erase are essentially the same as a normal poll and operate exactly the same way. There is just a different poll type byte that lets the tag know it is a write/erase instead of a poll. This is a mode that is normally never even used by the user unless they want to change the ID in the tag.

Please justify if you want to have the logo on the label. A2: This device is a transmitter/receiver and therefore the receiver is subject to DoC under Part 15 Rules. Therefore the FCC logo is needed. Q3) The limits for 15.231 at 433.95 MHz are 108.8 Peak and 80.8 Average. The test report on page 53 states that the readings are all peak when the limit you have for the fundamental is average. 15.231 (3): (3) The limits on the field strength of the spurious emissions in the above table are based on the fundamental frequency of the intentional radiator. Spurious emissions shall be attenuated to the average (or, alternatively, CISPR quasi-peak) limits shown in this table or to the general limits shown in §15.209, whichever limit permits a higher field strength. Are you using average limits for all data on page 53? Please explain. A3: The limits are Average limits. CFR 15.35(c) was applied for measuring pulsed emissions. The average field strength was determined by measuring the absolute voltage during a 100 ms interval (using a Peak detector). This value was then corrected by applying a duty cycle correction factor to the measured value. This correction is calculated from 20 log (ON time/100ms). The peak limits are 20 dB higher than the average limits as stated in CFR 15.35(b). The peak levels of the emissions are found in the table before the averaging (using the duty cycle correction factor) is applied. The peak values are only 9.66 dB higher than the average values. Therefore the peak limits are met.

Functional Operation The Seeker Hand Held Reader and Tags are designed to provide a simple and low cost RFID system. A commercially available Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) and a custom transceiver card will comprise a Hand Held Reader. The Hand Held Reader has the ability to display through a custom graphical user interface (GUI) the tags in its immediate vicinity. The custom receiver card receives a signal from the tags on an internationally recognized frequency of 433 MHz. The Hand Held Reader is used to “search” an area for “tags” which are attached to various pieces of equipment. The tag is programmed with two ‘3-digit’ codes and attached to the equipment to be tracked. The tag will audibly ‘chirp’ and broadcast its code in response to the proper signal from the reader to both identify and determine tag status. The primary use for the Seeker is finding assets within a hospital environment. In this application the reader is used to determine if an individual tag is within the range of the reader, thus creating a simple finder application. Another possibility for use is in inventorying assets. The Hand Held Reader applications could include inventorying tags in lumberyards or utility storage areas. The driver of a vehicle could drive through the lot and create an inventory through the reader. The reader would integrate with the PinPoint Mobile Resource Manager (MRM) through its sync cradle. When the user returns from the field they would place the PDA in its cradle and the data it most recently acquired would be downloaded into the MRM database. The MRM integration would also include the ability to enter tag information through the MRM Tag Builder application and have tag information uploaded to the PDA.
