Accuspeed Installation Instructions: FCC Warning: Changes or modifications not expressly approved by Phoenix International could void the user's authority to operate the equipment. Installation: The Accuspeed ground speed sensor is designed as an OEM ground speed sensor, and is to be mounted from 45 cm to 90 cm vertical height above the ground and at 35 degrees from horizontal. The sensor is designed to face the rear of the vehicle. When designing a mounting bracket, avoid having metal extend beyond the mounting feet of the sensor anywhere around the circumference of the radome, which is the integrated antenna for this device. The sensor can be mounted directly onto the tractor without need for rubber mounting feet. Avoid having any moving parts (i.e. tires, treads, 3-point hitch, etc) in the line of sight of the sensor. AccuSpeed Doppler Effect Speed Sensor PHOENIX INTERNATIONAL AccuSpeed Doppler Effect Speed Sensor The Phoenix International AccuSpeed Doppler Effect Speed Sensor uses a concentrated millimeterwave radar signal and the proven Doppler shift principle to accurately measure true ground speed of vehicles that operate in adverse environmental conditions. The AccuSpeed sensor combines in its ruggedized plastic enclosure and a unique radar front end design with highly integrated digital signal processing (DSP) electronics. Output signal and installation details are backward-compatible with older speed sensor products. With its small size and low cost, AccuSpeed meets the requirements of OEM customers and retrofit markets. AccuSpeed’s industry-standard output provides a continuous and robust true ground speed signal whenever the vehicle is moving. While this signal is useful for driver information displays, it also enables closed- loop control systems, such as variable rate application techniques, and intelligent vehicle driveline management. A reliable true ground speed signal will also support emerging autonomous vehicle concepts. The sensor is typically installed at a height of 0.6 m but can be installed up to 1.2 m above the ground or above the top of the crop. The sensor should be mounted facing rearward and positioned so that it has a clear view of the ground. The AccuSpeed sensor has passed the full spectrum of tests specified in the ASAE EP- 455 Standard for electronics on mobile equipment including temperature, vibration, moisture, dust, electrical, and the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) tests. The unit also meets the requirements of the R&TTE Directive and is CE compliant. Operational Description

Theory of Operation for the Doppler Effect Speed Sensor (DESS) Phoenix International® 1441 44 th Street NW Fargo, North Dakota 58102 Doppler Effect Speed Sensor uses a concentrated millimeterwave radar signal and the Doppler shift principal to provide a measure of true ground speed of vehicles used in agricultural and forestry operations. The speed sensor relies on the radiation transmitted from the sensor being scattered by the ground and re-entering the sensor. If the sensor is moving, the scattered radiation appears to have a slightly different wavelength than the transmitted radiation. The difference in the two wavelengths is the Doppler signal. An ideal speed sensor would indicate a vehicle’s true ground speed instantaneously on any surface. It should perform under any acceleration/deceleration event as well as under steady state conditions. In reality, it is difficult for any one sensor to perform flawlessly under all conditions. Doppler effect speed sensors are ideal for stubble fields, plowed fields, and gravel roads which give a large amount of scattered radiation, but are less reliable on smooth surfaces such as on concrete or blacktop roads which have a larger amount of specular reflection. This is particularly true if the smooth surface is wet. Doppler effect speed sensors do not work if the incident surface is standing water. Sensor speed is a sum of all movement for which r⋅v is non zero. Where r is the vector indicating the column of microwave radiation incident on the ground, and v is the vector describing the velocity. For example if the sensor moves vertically (v v ) as well as horizontally (v h ), the speed indicated will be the magnitude of the vector r/|r|⋅v h + r/|r|⋅v v . Sensor Specular Reflection Scattered Radiation Ground Principle of Operation The Doppler effect speed sensor outputs 100 pulses/meter. A pulse is defined from rising edge to rising edge of the output pulse stream. The output pulses run from 0 – 12 VDC and are approximately square. The speed sensor is relatively insensitive to vehicle vibration at zero speed. Because the sensor is designed to detect movement, motion in the horizontal direction (vibration) can lead to the sensor giving a false speed signal even at zero speed. This effect has been minimized through design and sophisticated algorithms that are constantly executed by the on-board digital signal processor (DSP). The sensor detects changes in vehicle speed. Both acceleration from rest (or deceleration to rest) and acceleration/deceleration while in motion. Installation: The ground speed sensor is designed for mounting from 30 cm to 120-cm vertical height above the ground and at 35 degrees from horizontal. The sensor is designed to face the rear of the vehicle. The sensor can be mounted directly to the tractor without need for rubber mounting feet. The line of sight of the sensor shall not be blocked by any moving parts such as tires, treads, 3-point hitch. The following is an abbreviated version of the sensor specifications. RF Exposure Info

RF Exposure Information for Accuspeed Unit According to OET Bulletin 65, page 41, paragraph three; this unit is excluded from evaluation with respect to MPE limits since its radiated power is under 3 watts, which is the limit for equipment operating at frequencies above 1.5 GHz. This unit’s radiated power has been measured to be 100 mW (EIRP), which is substantially lower than the threshold stated in that document. The transceiver in this unit outputs about 5 mW of power at the frequency of 24.125 GHz.
