HARRIS CORPORATION 221 Jefferson Ridge Parkway Lynchburg, VA 24501 www.harris.com ATTESTATION Locked/unlocked AFC Operation The XG-15P 700/800 MHz Portable Radio use s a si ngle TCXO (19.2 MHz) as its frequency reference. All local oscillators are phase locked to this si ngle reference. The reference is speci fied to be better than +/- 1.5ppm over the operating temperature and voltage ranges. This reference oscillator has an elect ronic frequency control (EFC) range of +/ 410 Hz. The EFC ca n be fine- tuned through so ftware. The initial tuning is performed at factory test , ca lib ration and configura tion time. This function is performed by providing a GPS locked RF ca rrier to the radio under test , while the radio’s AFC function is enabled. The radio so ftware co mputes the difference between the internal reference and the applied GPS locked RF ca rrier and adjust s the EFC voltage to minimize the difference. The radio is then commanded to transmit an unmodulated ca rrier and the frequency of that carrier is checked to confirm that it is within tolerance. The EFC co rrect ion fact or i s stored in the radio’s non-volatile memory. Software control is use d to implement AFC, when operating in the 700 MHz band (Part 90, Subpart R rules) . In AFC locked mode, the digi tal si gnal processor examines the received base st ation signal and determines if there is any resi dual frequency error. The so ftware then adjust s to minimize the resi dual frequency error. Hardware co rrect ion provides a reso lution of below 0.1 ppm when adjust ing the TCXO and so it is st raightforward to co ntrol the TCXO to within the +/- 0.4 ppm requirement. The rece ived base station signal correct ion is a continuously execu ted radio funct ion. When the radio is switched from a trunked system to a conventional sy stem, the radio’s AFC uses the last determined base st ation correct ion value for frequency control. When the radio powers up on a co nventional channel, ca libration data will be use d. CONFIDENTIAL
