Technical Support The SpotCell TM serial number must be available to authorize technical support and/or to establish a return authorization for defective units. The serial number is located on the back of the Coverage Unit (CU) and Donor Unit (DU) as well as the box in which they were delivered. For your safety, beware of power lines and ensure appropriate safety measures are maintained at all times during the installation of the SpotCell equipment. If equipment not shipped with the SpotCell system is to be used during installation or mounting, follow all equipment manufacturer’s instructions in proper use to ensure injury is avoided. The DU and CU of the SpotCell are low power transmitters. As with a cell phone antenna, avoid unneccessary contact with the front of the units after installed. Mount the units in a location where people will not approach within 1 meter of the front of the DU and 20 centimeters in front of the CU. When deploying the extended coverage antenna, there must be a minimum separation of 10 cm between the main CU and the extended coverage antenna with the antennas facing in opposite directions. The extended coverage antenna should be mounted in locations where people will not approach within 20 cm in front of the antenna This manual outlines installation instructions and the appendix offers practical safety tips (see page 57 entitled ‘Safety Hints’). If you are not sure about a safe installation, do not attempt to install it yourself. Call a professional installer for help. iiSpotCell LIMITED WARRANTY AND LIMITATION OF LIABILITY: 1. What is Covered and for How Long? Spotwave Wireless Inc. ("Spotwave") warrants to the original Purchaser that the Spotwave SpotCell System (the "System") is free from defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service for a period of 12 months from the date of shipment from Spotwave (the "Limited Warranty Period"). 2. What is not covered? This Limited Warranty is conditioned upon proper use of the System by the Purchaser. This Limited Warranty does not cover (and will become null and void in the event of ): (a) defects or damage resulting from accident, misuse, abuse, neglect, unusual physical, electrical or electromechanical stress, modification of the System or any part thereof, or cosmetic damage; (b) removal, alteration or defacing of the serial number or other identifying marks on the System; (c) all plastic surfaces and other externally exposed components that are scratched or damaged due to normal use; (d) malfunctions resulting from the use of the System in conjunction with accessories, products or (ancillary) or peripheral equipment not provided by Spotwave; or (e) defects or damage from unauthorized or improper testing, operation, maintenance, installation, servicing or adjustment of the System. Any repairs or replacements provided by Spotwave outside of the Limited Warranty Period (including repairs to or replacement after the end of the Warranty Period), or in excess of the services provided during the Limited Warranty Period, will subject to Spotwave's then prevailing rates. 3. What are Spotwave's Obligations and how do you make a claim? During the Limited Warranty Period, Spotwave will repair or replace, at Spotwave's sole option, without charge to Purchaser, any defective component of the System, provided that the System is returned promptly upon discovery of the defect and during the Limited Warranty Period. To obtain service, Systems must be returned to an authorized service facility in the original packaging or packaging adequate for shipping, accompanied by Purchaser's sales receipt or comparable substitute proof of sale showing the date of purchase and the serial number of the System. A valid RMA is required prior to any return. To locate your nearest authorized service facility, call Spotwave Customer Service at 1-877-610-9586. Spotwave may, at Spotwave's sole option, use rebuilt, reconditioned, or new parts or components when repairing any System or replace a System with a rebuilt, reconditioned or new System. Repaired Systems will be warranted for a period equal to the remainder of the original Limited Warranty Period for the original System or for 90 days, whichever is longer. All replaced parts, components, boards or equipment shall become the property of Spotwave. If Spotwave determines that any System is not covered by this Limited Warranty, Purchaser must pay the costs for all parts, shipping, and labor charges for the repair or return of such System. 4. What are the Limits on Spotwave's Liability? Location The DU can be mounted anywhere your cell phone works. This may be on a rooftop (typical rural set-up), on the side of a building, or inside a building (typical downtown set-up). The CU will be mounted inside the building where your cell phone does not work.(The illustration at the right depicts a typical installation.) To start the installation, place the DU and CU in the general areas where they are to be located. Do not physically mount them at this time. Maximum separation between the DU and CU, and back-to-back positioning are optimal when both are mounted indoors. This is the direction the DU must face when mounted. 10. Final Checklist 1.Properly ground the DU via the grounding bolt. 2.Ensure that there is a drip loop on the cable connecting to the DU. 3.Firmly affix the cable to the building where it runs between the DU and CU. 7. If only one of the split bands is currently active, then set the AP switch to the active band. If both bands are active, then the AP switch can be in either position for DU alignment. Connect the power supply to the CU, and then plug the adapter into the AC outlet. 8. Set CU to Active Move the switch on the bottom of the CU to “2” (active). Hold the CU in the location to be mounted. The LCD on the bottom of the CU indicates coverage ( ) by the number of bars; more bars indicate better coverage. Spotwave Wireless Inc. 1 Hines Road Ottawa ON K2K 3C7 Canada Tel: (613) 591-1662 Fax: (613) 591-8107 www.spotwave.com Subject: Operational Description of DU 1900 FULL BAND The Full Band PCS DU The PCS DU is a 60MHz wide amplifier outdoor unit that receives the RF signal from the SpotCell 141/142 Dual Band CU and Spotcell 111/112 Split Band CU and transmits it to the Base Station and receives downlink RF signals from the base station to the CU for processing. The PCS DU is powered by a DC power that is transmitted with the same RF signal on the Coax cable from the CU. The PCS DU is also provided with a diplexer that separates the Cellular band RF signals from AP2 and transmits it the Cellular DU through a 1meter coax RF cable. The PCS DU is also provided with an integrated antenna with a peak gain of 11.5dBi. The PCS DU has a fixed gain on the downlink and on the uplink. It is also provided with an RSSI level indicator LED for installation. All the hardware is housed in a plastic housing for outdoor deployment. The PCS DU is also provided with a grounding stud for lightning protection. The protection/regulatory circuitry is also capable of shutting down the final stage amplifier on the uplink when the system decides to do so due to high in-band signal, under/over input voltage, high downlink in-band signal, high out-band signals, minimum Downlink signal, an isolation that can compromise the stability of the system and if the synthesizers get unlocked. Tune-Up Procedure and DC voltage of the last stage Amplifier. The final stage of the PCS DU on the downlink is a GaAs HBT linear amplifier, part N° SXA-389, from Sirenza Microdevices. (See attached datasheet for SXA-389). The device is operated at 5Vdc @120mA. The Uplink final stage of the PCS DU on the uplink is a GaAs HBT linear amplifier, part N° SPA-2318, from Sirenza Microdevices. (See attached datasheet for SPA-2318). The devices is operated at 5vdc @ 400mA. There is no tune-up on the PCS DU. The PCS DU has a fixed gain of 23dB on the Downlink and an UL gain of 20dB. Description: The DU 1900 FULL BAND Outdoor Adaptive Repeater is a full PCS band outdoor transmitter that is part of two systems. When deployed as part of the dual band transmitter system, Cellular and PCS, it is named Spotcell 141/142 PCS DU and when deployed as part of the PCS split band transmitter system, PCS and PCS, it is named Spotcell 111/112 (S) DU. The DU 1900 Full Band outdoor Adaptive Repeater equipment has been tested and the performance characterized in accordance with the MPE requirement of 47 CFR, Part 1.1310, Radiofrequency Exposure Limits for fixed installations, pursuant to 47 CFR, Part 24.52 of the FCC rules and regulation for PCS equipment and 47 CFR, Part 1.1310(b). Environmental Assessment Evaluation For fixed transmitters, CFR 47, Part 1.1307 (b) requires evaluation of Environmental Assessment if the particular transmitter would cause human exposure to levels of radio frequency radiation in excess of the limits in 1.1310. FCC regulation 47 CFR, Part 1.1307, Table 1 specifies that for broadband PCS, subpart E, EA evaluation is required for the following sites: • non-building mounted antennas: height above ground level to lowest point of antenna < 10m and total power of all channels > 3280 W EIRP. • building mounted antennas: total power of all channels > 3280 W EIRP. Since the maximum radiated composite output power of the DU 1900 Full Band is ≤30dBm EIRP (1 W EIRP) and the transmitter is designed for installation at outdoors and on rooftops, the transmitters are excluded for a routine environmental evaluation or preparation of an EA. Copyright © 2004, Spotwave Wireless Inc Section I – Human Exposure Compliance Statement for Spotcell 141/142 PCS DU (Dual Band Deployment) Pursuant to 47 CFR, Part 1.1310, the power density prediction was done in accordance with the FCC Office of Engineering and Technology (OET) Bulletin 65, Edition 97-01, "Evaluating Compliance with FCC Guidelines for Human Exposure to Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields". The new adopted changes to the Commission's Rules Regarding Human Exposure to Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields, as specified in document FCC 03-132, released on June 26, 2003 have also been implemented. The Spotcell 141/142 PCS DU Outdoor Adaptive repeater operates in the 1900MHz PCS band and is a low power adaptive repeater, having integral antenna built into the DU module. The repeater is designed to operate in an outdoor environment. The Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) limit for the general public is 1mW/cm 2 , averaged over 30 minutes, and for occupationally exposed persons is 5mW/cm 2 , averaged over 6 minutes time for the whole 1900MHz PCS band, as specified by 47 CFR, Part 1.1310, Table 1. The prediction methods used to calculate power density levels are based on worst- case far-field calculations: S = EIRP/(4πR 2 ), (1) From Equations for Predicting RF Fields, OET, bulletin 65-, Edition 97-01, August 1997, Where: S = power density in mW/cm 2 . EIRP = Equivalent isotropically radiated power in mW. R = distance in cm. The DU has a maximum composite total radiated power of 1000mW (30dBm) EIRP. Hence, S = 1mW/cm 2 . EIRP = 1000mW. R = 8.92cm, using the formula in (1). Since the Spotcell 141/142 PCS DU is deployed where the separation from the publicly accessible area is greater than 1 meter, the public is in no danger of being exposed to this limit. The customer manual has guideline where installers are instructed to install the DU in areas where no one will be within a meter of approach. Controlled/Occupational Exposure For occupational workers, the Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) limit is 5mW/cm 2 , as specified by 47 CFR, Part 1.1310, Table 1. Using equation (1) above, the distance at which the MPE limit occurs is 4cm. The DU has a radome with a separation of 3.5 cm from the radiating elements at the point where the gain is maximum. Hence there is only 0.5 cm of separation from the Copyright © 2004, Spotwave Wireless Inc housing where occupational workers could be exposed to the Maximum Permissible Exposure limit. The worst-case scenario is if some body touches the DU while transmitting. The maximum power density at the plastic housing is: S = 1000mW/(4π3.5 2 ) = 6.5mW/cm 2 (from OET, bulletin 65, page 11). At this power density, the maximum allowable time, T , is: 5mW/cm 2 x 6 minutes = 6.5mW/cm 2 x T T = 4.6 minutes Anyone who may be on a transient in front of the DU while transmitting may touch the housing of the transmitter or may linger for longer than 4.6 minutes at a distance less than 0.5cm. To prevent any person from staying longer than 4.6 minutes in front of the transmitter, at a distance less than 0.5cm, or from touching the radome for longer than 4.6 minutes, a warning label is applied on the DU informing installers to avoid being in front of the DU within a distance of one meter. This is being extra- cautious.
