1 Metre-Pro Technologies Mobile Radio Unit (MRU) User’s Guide 2 Overview This document covers the MRU series of radio transceivers designed and manufactured by Metre-Pro Technologies, Inc. It is intended to guide the user through the proper setup and operation of the MRU. Failure to strictly adhere to this guide may cause improper operation and/or damage to the unit, and this could result in voiding of all warranties. Authority to Operate Equipment This equipment complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Any changes or modifications not expressly approved by the manufacturer could void the user’s authority to operate the equipment. Product Description The MRU is a radio transceiver specifically designed for automated meter reading applications, providing a low cost and high reliability solution. It establishes a wireless link to the ER series of radio transceivers located at the meters. The primary purpose of the MRU is to collect data from ER series radio transceivers. Contact your account manager or distributor regarding the ER series radio transceivers. Performance The performance of the MRU and any other radio frequency device is subject to many factors. Some of these factors are: interference from other radio frequency sources, soil and soil moisture, buildings, proximity to surrounding objects, and weather. The MRU is designed for optimum performance, however, the above factors may enhance or degrade performance. Consult Metre-Pro Technologies if performance issues occur. Enhancements and Design Changes Metre-Pro Technologies is continually improving and enhancing its products and services. We reserve the right to make product, service, and specification changes without notice. Repairs and Service This product is not field repairable. In the event of a failure, contact your account manager or distributor for assistance in returning the product and getting replacements. Metre-Pro liability is limited solely to the replacement of the device and excludes labor and other costs. The purchase of this product implies an agreement to all restrictions, guides, and terms contained within this document. 3 Training Metre-Pro offers an instructor-led training program for those involved in the use, sales, installation, or marketing of the full line of Metre-Pro products and services. Contact your account manager or distributor for more details. MRU Installation 1. Place the magnetically-mounted MRU antenna unit in a central location atop the vehicle. Route the cable from the antenna unit into the cabin of the vehicle, being careful not to crush or crimp the cable. Failure to comply with this may cause improper operation and/or damage to the unit. WARNING: This antenna device must be installed in a location that is not accessible to the general public. Install the device so that it is more than 20 cm from unsuspecting personnel. Failure to install this device as described will result in a failure to comply with FCC rules for radio frequency exposure and is discouraged. NOTE: The MRU is designed to be used only with the MRU antenna unit. The MRU will not function if an attempt is made to connect a different type of antenna unit. 2. Screw the connector at the end of the antenna cable into the MRU transceiver unit. The MRU will not operate if the antenna cable is left unconnected. 3. Plug the power cord into a 12 volt cigarette lighter socket. Turn the cigarette lighter adapter power switch on (if equipped). 4. Connect the laptop computer’s serial cable to the MRU’s serial port. 5. Turn the MRU power switch on.
