Chapter Highlights • Solution overview • Mesh network • SkyGateway • SkyExtender devices • SkyConnector 1 SkyPilot SkyAccess DualBand Installation 10 Solution Overview SkyPilot Networks delivers a wireless, end-to-end broadband solution that seamlessly supports high-capacity, high-coverage mesh networks. Designed for managed-access networks and service providers, the SkyPilot network takes broadband wireless the “last mile” with a cost- effective, robust infrastructure solution. Based on a high-performance architecture that deploys intelligent antenna arrays, the SkyPilot network delivers a dynamic broadband solution with significant advantages for business and home users. SkyPilot wireless devices are simple to install and easily fit into any type of wireless environment—metropolitan, business, or home. The auto-discovery and rapid provisioning features of a SkyPilot wireless mesh network can greatly reduce deployment and maintenance costs. Multiple topology options and network scalability create intriguing options for rapidly expanding a metro Wi-Fi customer base. SkyPilot devices’ multiple antenna configurations work within mixed-use environments of municipal applications and broadband Internet access, supporting public-private partnerships such as public safety services. Mesh Network The typical configuration for a SkyPilot network is a mesh topology, which uses SkyExtenders to extend range and add network flexibility. In a mesh configuration, subscribers can either connect directly to the SkyGateway or connect indirectly via SkyExtenders (see Figure ). In addition to adding range, a mesh network allows connections from locations where obstructions prevent line-of-sight access to a SkyGateway hub. Mesh networks are ideal for dense subscriber environments, for filling in coverage “holes,” and for reaching subscribers in areas where RF communication is obstructed by hills, trees, buildings, or other obstacles. Introduction The SkyPilot Carrier-Class Broadband Wireless System supports an innovative architecture offering point-to-point, point-to- multipoint and mesh topologies. Automatic network discovery and connectivity allows an operator to quickly build a network offering high levels of coverage and redundancy. The system implements a sophisticated and flexible Layer 2 network. Rate control and packet prioritization enables multiple service offerings, including high-quality voice over IP (VoIP) support. Packet filtering combined with wireless link encryption provides very high levels of security. Full authentication and management of subscriber nodes is supported, with each network element providing an SNMP Agent and a Command Line Interface (CLI). Software images are upgraded over the air. This document provides a description of the SkyPilot system architecture and protocols. The hardware components are described along with details of network topologies and routing, spectral and link management, network-wide synchronization, quality of service, security provisions, and network management. System Components The SkyPilot Carrier-Class Broadband Wireless System has four hardware components that together support a highly flexible wireless network architecture: • SkyGateway The SkyGateway provides an interface between the wireless network and the Internet or other Local/Wide Area Network (LAN/WAN). The SkyGateway links directly to SkyExtenders and/or SkyConnectors as customer premises equipment (CPE) in point-to-point/multipoint configurations, or indirectly via multiple SkyExtender hops in a full mesh network topology. The SkyGateway has a compact, lightweight, fully integrated mechanical design with a 10/100Base-T interface and an integral GPS receiver to provide a highly accurate system timing source. • SkyExtender The SkyExtender enables a network operator to expand coverage and increase system capacity. The SkyExtender can link directly to a SkyGateway and/or one or more SkyExtenders and/or SkyConnectors. The SkyExtender hardware is identical to that of the SkyGateway, with the software image differentiating functionality. The 10/100Base-T Ethernet interface may be used to provide a subscriber interface, allowing the SkyExtender to perform double-duty as CPE that extends the network’s reach from the SkyGateway(s). • SkyExtender DualBand The SkyExtender DualBand has the same backhaul features as a SkyExtender, and adds an integral Wi-Fi access point to afford service providers with greater flexibility when deploying wireless access solutions in HotZones or HotRegions. As the name implies, the SkyExtender DualBand has separate radios for backhaul (at 5 GHz) and access (industry-standard IEEE 802.11b/g at 2.4 GHz). The separation of access from backhaul enables the use of multiple non-overlapping channels when deploying a “honeycomb” of Wi-Fi cells, thus enhancing throughput, subscriber density, network capacity and scalability. • SkyConnector The SkyConnector comes in both outdoor and indoor variants, and provides an interface between a subscriber and the wireless SkyPilot network. The link may be indirect via a SkyExtender or direct to a SkyGateway. The subscriber interface is standard 10/100Base-T Ethernet. The SkyConnector is fully integrated and houses a single antenna with a 28° horizontal cov…

SkyPilot SkyAccess/SkyConnector U-NII Band Transmit Power Control (TPC) Contents CONTENTS.................................................................................................................................... 3 OVERVIEW................................................................................................................................ 4 FUNCTIONALITY........................................................................................................................... 4 SkyPilot SkyAccess/SkyConnector TPC 4 Overview SkyAccess DualBand and SkyConnector units (hereafter referred to generically as SkyConnectors) operating in the U-NII bands of 5.25-5.35 GHz and 5.47-5.725 GHz employ a Transmit Power Control (TPC) mechanism which reduces the EIRP below the 30 dBm mean value by 6 dB to comply with the FCC’s part 15 requirements. This document provides a description of the method and algorithms utilized to satisfy the TPC requirements. Functionality The SkyPilot system implements several separate functions that provide the TPC functionality regulators have specified. SkyPilot’s system implements four (4) separate mechanisms that match the intent of TPC. 1. Use of directional antennas: with directional antennas, each a narrow 45° beam, the SkyPilot system efficiently utilizes the spectrum and helps avoid interference. Since the SkyPilot system does not meaningless “spray” the spectrum in all 360°, the spectrum can be reused by other unlicensed users. 2. Antenna switching: the directional antennas on the SkyPilot system are not used all the time. Instead, these antennas are used periodically through the use of an antenna switching system. The SkyPilot system transmits packets only on one specific 45° at a time and then switches to transmit on another 45° sector in the next time frame. By switching directional antennas, the SkyPilot system furthers the ability to reuse the unlicensed frequency. 1 SkyPilot SkyAccess/SkyConnector TPC 5 3. Configurable output power control: the SkyPilot system allows administrators to select amongst several different power levels. This gives control to the operators in the unlicensed spectrum to be “good neighbors” when other users are operating in the same spectrum. 4. Automatic modulation control: the SkyPilot system operates under an automatic modulation rate control (from 6 to 54 Mbps) algorithm that automatically selects the highest, most reliable rate possible on continuous basis. This process ensures the optimal transmission type for all conditions and minimizes the time to transmit a given data packet while also ensuring that the minimum the power level is utilized. a. Link Optimization: SkyPilot’s link optimization algorithm initially tests all mod rates (6 to 54 Mbps) and determines which rate satisfies our link criteria based upon received signal power levels and packet error rates. The highest modulation rates are reduced by 6 dB to ensure that the shortest transmit times and minimum power levels have been attempted before moving to more robust modulation rates and higher power levels in more challenging environments. b. Dynamic Modulation Control: SkyPilot’s Dynamic Modulation Control continuously monitors link statistics to ensure maximum link efficiency from both a modulation rate and power level. If the link can support a higher order modulation rate and lower transmit power level, SkyPilot’s algorithm will increase the modulation rate so as to increase channel efficiency. Hysterisis is employed to prevent the system from switching back and forth between modulation rates too quickly and thereby increasing system instability. The combination of these four mechanisms demonstrates the intent of SkyPilot Networks to meet the intent of Transmit Power Control regulations.
