Correspondence Summary Q & A October 26, 2004 SUBJECT: MILTOPE CORPORATION - FCC ID: SH5-CAP TCB Question 1: UNII: - Part 15.407(d): Operation in the band 5.15-5.25 GHZ is restricted to Indoor use only. Such statement could not be found in the user’s manual. Please, explain or provide a revised user’s manual. RESPONSE: The product is design specifically for airborne applications in which the unit will be mounted inside the aircraft cabin as stated in section 1-4 of the Operator Manual. Section 3-2 also confirms the mounting configuration of the unit was well as antennas. When configured as the Wireless Access Bridge (WAB) in which the antenna is mounted external to the aircraft, only 802.11b/g operation is available and does not include the 5.15 – 5.25 GHz band. TCB Question 5: Test set up photos: According to ANSI C63.4 these photos must be showing the configuration representative of the worst-case spurious emissions. The photos show the antennas laying on the turntable. Was this configuration producing the worst-case emissions? Antenna positioning in test setup should represent typical final product configuration. Further, if the table is made of wood the antenna in horizontal polarization will couple with the table. In the case, the antenna should be supported in vertical polarization using a foam polystyrene block. Please explain. RESPONSE: The test setup is indicative of the typical final product configuration. Further more, investigations were preformed to determine the configuration representative of worst case emissions and the test setup photos reflect this configuration. Indoor should be interpreted to mean inside a building. Please revise filing accordingly. It is my understanding the there was a policy change because of the application that does now allow for use of a UNII device on-board an aircraft. 2) Please provide spurious radiated emissions for simultaneous and collocated operation of the two modules internal to the device. Because the CAP configuration is capable of operating both radio modules in the 2.4 GHz band simultaneously, inter-modulation products were also evaluated. One radio module of the EUT was set to the lowest channel available and the other radio module set to the next adjacent channel. Any intermodulation products observed were maximized and recorded. All modes of 802.11b and 802.11g radios were evaluated for worst case. This was repeated with two radio modules set to the highest possible channel and next adjacent channel available respectively. No inter-modulation products were detected for any combinations of channel selections or modes. 3) The grant comment requires professional installation yet this does not appear to be included in the user/installation manual. Please address. A statement was added to Section 3.1 of the manual. The revised Manual has been uploaded. 4) Please detail which antenna in the external photo exhibit are for which mode of operation. Are all provided cables shown? The “External Photos Exhibit” was updated to clarify the antennas and cables. The revised exhibit has been uploaded. 5015 B.U. Bowman Drive Buford, GA 30518 USA Voice: 770-831-8048 Fax: 770-831-8598 5) Please describe by who and how the CAP and WAB versions are reconfigured. The CAP and WAB are configured at the manufacturer’s facility on a per job demand. The serial number distinguishes one from the other. The Serial number for the CAP begins with “CAP” and the serial number for the WAB begins with “WAB”. Once configured, they will not be re- configured while in service. The CAP supports IEEE802.11a/b/g wireless applications utilizing two Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) transmitter/receiver modules communicating in the appropriately assigned radio frequency spectrum to facilitate wireless communications to other aircraft cabin devices on the network. The CAP provides a bridge between IEEE802.3 wired Ethernet LANs and IEEE802.11a/b/g compliant wireless networks. Each transmitter/receiver module contains one RF output, which support either IEEE802.11a or IEEE802.11b/g operation; but not both simultaneously. The RF output of each module is brought out, via internal coax cable harnesses, to two external (50Ω) TNC connectors, (J2 & J3). A normal configuration would consist of one module being software selected for 802.11a operation and the other module being selected for 802.11b/g operation. This configuration would then provide simultaneous IEEE802.11a/b/g operation. Output power and input sensitivity for each module is controlled independently. The variant Wireless Access Bridge (WAB) is identical in hardware to the Cabin Access Point (CAP) with the exception of the antenna assembly and firmware which allows for only 802.11b/g operation. In addition, only one radio module and RF output is utilized in this configuration. The WAB is used to form a wireless Local Area Network (LAN) connection between an aircraft and a ground based LAN, typically an airport, hanger, FBO facility, flight operations facility, tarmac, etc. The WAB is mounted on aircrafts. The WAB, by functioning as a Wi-Fi TM compatible client, provides a “wireless link” from the aircraft to ground based COTS access points (AP) that may be provided by multiple access point suppliers. By acting as a Wi-Fi TM c…
