The very first parameter which is often required to be taken into consideration is the receiver sensitivity. Each of those interested in the wireless data transmission probably knows what this parameter means, but we should see it simultaneously in its relation to other receiver parameters, especially the blocking and desensitization. Today’s wireless communication arena tends to be overcrowded and a modern radio modem, which is demanded to compete, should have good dynamic range that is defined by the parameters listed above. The receiver of a radio modem, which is designed purely for optimum sensit- ivity, will not be able to give proper performance. However, the main receiver parameters determining 47© RACOM s.r.o. – RipEX Radio modem & Router Product its dynamic range go against each other and …

Operational Description

RA-400 Operational Description RA-400 is a two-way radio for transmitting and receiving digital data modulated on a radio frequency carrier with a frequency range of 432 to 470 MHz. The unit consists of an antenna, receiver and transmitter circuitry, a microcontroller to control the basic radio functionality and a modem board for baseband processing of the digital data. Antenna The antenna is tuned to the 432 – 470 MHz frequency band. Immediately next to the antenna is a directional coupler to sample the outgoing transmit signal for use in the linearisation of the transmitter amplifier chain (see below). A low-pass filter common to both transmitter and receiver is followed by a high linearity Tx-Rx switch to separate the signal paths between the transmitter and receiver. Receiver The receiver is a dual conversion superheterodyne type with a first intermediate frequency at 70 MHz. It consists of a second low-pass filter to further eliminate the out-of-band signals and prevent desensitisation in subsequent stages. The incoming signal is then boosted by a low-noise amplifier (LNA) and downconverted to the first IF frequency by means of a mixer and local oscillator (LO1). LO1 is a phase-locked loop controlled oscillator and its output frequency (within the range of 502 – 540 MHz) is determined by the on-board microcontroller ( μP). The choice of this frequency also determines the channel the receiver is operating at. After channel filtering and amplification, the IF signal is down-converted once again by means of a second mixer and local oscillator (LO3) tuned to 73.125 MHz. Analogue-to-digital conversion and I/Q demodulation is performed at baseband after a further mixing stage and the signal is then fed into the FPGA on the modem board for baseband processing and decoding. Transmitter The transmitter has a direct-conversion architecture whereby the digital baseband signal obtained from the FPGA undergoes digital-to-analogue conversion and I/Q modulation, and then up-converted to the final transmitter frequency (432 – 470 MHz, as in receiver) in single mixing stage by the help of the transmitter local oscillator (LO2) with the same frequency range. The frequency of LO2 is also controlled by the microcontroller and this selection determines the transmit channel being used. The modulated signal at the final frequency is amplified in two stages by the pre-amplifier (RF AMP) and the power amplifier (Power AMP) to achieve the desired output power level at the antenna. After low- pass filtering, the signal is fed to the Tx port of the Tx-Rx switch. In order to maintain the linearity of the transmitter signal chain and cause minimal distortion on the complex modulation, the outgoing transmitter signal is sampled just prior to the antenna by means of a directional coupler and is fed back to the I/Q modulator. Transmitter linearisation is performed using the Cartesian Feedback architecture. Antenna connections and grounding Please refer to Section 6 (Installation) of the User Manual also provided with the certification application documents.

RF Exposure Info

Page 1 of 4 Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) Evaluation according to the OET Bulletin 65 (Edition 97-01) Evaluated equipment: The RipEX radio modem for data transmission in the 368 – 470 MHz frequency range Developed:Ing. Jiří Hruška Date:15.2.2012 Pages:4 Page 2 of 4 Evaluated equipment The RipEX radio modem is designed for bi-directional data transfer in a radio frequency channel assigned from the specified frequency range. When transmitting, it generates an angle modulated, continuous, constant-envelope radio-frequency signal on the output (antenna) connector. The transmitted signal spectral width is limited to a single channel and never exceeds the respective channel spacing, which is 25 kHz or 12,5 kHz or 6,25 kHz. The maximum nominal output radio-frequency (RF) power of the RipEX radio modem is 10 Watts. The output RF power variation in extreme conditions is guaranteed by the manufacturer to stay within -3,0 dB to +2.0 dB limits. The RipEX radio modem main specifications for a frequency range around 400 MHz are in Table 1. Table 1 – RipEX radio modem main technical parameters ParameterValue Frequency rangefrom 368 MHz to 470 MHz Channel spacing6,25 / 12,5 / 25 kHz Number of channels in the operating range16320 / 8160 / 4080 Channel setting methodsoftware Supply voltage (nominal)13,8 V Supply voltage range10 V to 30 V Operating temperature range-40 °C to +70 °C Current consumption: Reception: Transmission 1W: Transmission 10W: 360 mA 1,1 A 3,0 A Configurable RF output power rangefrom 0,1 W to 10 W Antenna connectorTNC RF output impedance 50  The RipEX radio modem is connected to the antenna by a coaxial cable. Since the antenna may be connected by a very short cable, the cable loss shall be considered negligible in the calculation. The main parameters of recommended antennas are listed in Table 2. These are parameters specified by the respective manufacturers. The antennas listed in Table 2 are supplied with the RipEX radio modem upon request. Page 3 of 4 1 MPE Calculations According to the OET Bulletin 65 (Edition 97-01) R= √ P.G 4.π.S Where: S=Power density (in appropriate units, e.g. mW/cm2) P=Power input to antenna (in appropriate units, e.g., mW) G=Power gain of the antenna in the direction of interest relative to an isotropic radiator R=Distance to the centre of radiation of the antenna (appropriate units, e.g., cm) Tx Frequency = 368 MHz The exposure at the lowest frequency of the operating range make the worst case, since the limits given in §1.1310 of the FCC Rules increase with frequency (in the frequency range applicable to the evaluated equipment) whereas the radiation from RipEX radio modem will be constant. Maximum peak power = 42.0 (dBm) The maximum peak power is calculated as the nominal maximum power increased by the margin allowed by the applicable FCC standard (+2dB) Antenna gain = 2.15 (dBi) The antenna gain of the half-wave dipole is considered as the worst-case scenario. The areas of exposure never lie in the direction of the main lobe of the transmitting antenna. In fact, the higher the gain of the antenna is, the lower the radiation in the directions relevant for exposure evaluation will be. S = 368/1500 = 0.245 [mW/cm2] The FCC limit for exposure of general population / uncontrolled exposure at 368 MHz Page 4 of 4 P = 15850 [mW] The numerical value of maximum TX power G = 1.64 The numerical value of half-wave dipole gain The worst case scenario also assumes 100% duty cycle. Though the equipment assessed allows for that, it never happens in reality thanks to the packet-oriented transmission environment. Calculated minimum separation distance from antenna, where the limit for general public / uncontrolled exposure is met, is: Ru = 92 cm The distance, where the limit for occupation / controlled exposure is met, is: Rc = 41 cm The distance, where the limits are met for typical directional and omni directional antennas typically used with RipEX radio modem. For directional antennas is safe distance validate in direction side of main beam, where is maximum energy emitted by antenna. Table #1 – The distance where the FCC limits are met for typical antennas Conclusion: It is safe to assume that members of general public will never be present in the distance Ru (or lower) to a fixed installation of antenna of the evaluated equipment. Equally it is safe to assume that e.g. a member of staff performing mast maintenance will spend only negligible fractions of time in the Rc (or lower) distance to the transmitting antenna (the Rc distance actually corresponds with the physical size of the antenna itself). Consequently, in our opinion, the operation of the evaluated equipment would not make a significant environmental effect. 300 - 400 MHz/ 70 cm band - 10 Watt RF power Antenna codeAntenna descriptionGain G (-) Distance where the FCC limits is met for OV380.1single dipole4,62,9121,854,5 OV380.2s tacked double dipole7,65,8172,076,9 SA380.33 elem et directional Yagi7,65,8172,076,9 SA380.55 elem et directional Yagi8,77,4195,287,3 SA380.99 elem et directional Yagi12,517,8302,4135,2 Gain G (dBi) General Population/Uncontrolled Exposure (cm) Occupational/Controlled Exposure (cm) Page 5 of 4
