3-10Managing Power CHAPTER 4 Expanding Your Computer You can expand the capabilities of your computer by connecting other peripheral devices. When using a device, be sure to read the instructions accompanying the device together with the relevant section in this chapter. This chapter gives guidelines on installing and using these devices: l External monitor l USB device l Serial device l IR device l Bluetooth-capable device l IEEE 1394 device l Video capture device 4-2Expanding Your Computer Connecting an External Monitor If you want the benefits of a larger display screen with higher resolution, you can connect an external CRT monitor that supports the DVI interface to your computer. Follow this procedure to connect an external monitor: 1. Make sure that the computer is not turned on. 2. Plug the DVI adapter to the computer’s DVI-I port. 3. Plug the signal connector to the DVI adapter. 4. Plug the monitor’s power cord into an electrical outlet. 5. To use the monitor, turn on the monitor before turning on the computer. 6. The monitor should respond by default. If not, you can switch the display to the monitor or to both (simultaneous display), or to multi- display by pressing Fn + F9 . 7. You can change display settings through your operating system (Display Properties in Windows). See your operating system documentation or online help for specific information. CAUTION: Do not disconnect the external monitor while the computer is in Standby mode or Hibernation mode. If no external monitor is connected when the computer resumes, the LCD remains blank and the output is not displayed. Expanding Your Computer4-3 Connecting a USB Device NOTE: To take advantage of the USB 2.0 feature, the USB 2.0 driver supplied with your computer must be installed (see chapter 6). Your computer has four USB ports that supports transfer rates up to 12 MB/s for USB 1.1 devices and 480 MB/s for USB 2.0 devices, such as digital camera, scanner, printer, modem, and mouse. USB is specified to be an industry standard extension to the PC architecture. It supports “Plug-and-Play” technology so you can install and remove USB devices without turning off the computer. With its multiple connection capability, up to 127 devices can be connected in a daisy-chain configuration. In addition, you can use a USB hub that converts a single USB connector into multiple ports where USB devices can be connected. To connect a USB device, simply plug the device cable to one of the USB ports. 4-4Expanding Your Computer Connecting a Serial Device Your computer has a serial port for connecting a serial device such as an external modem. Follow this procedure to connect a serial device: 1. Make sure the “COM1 Ports” item is set properly in the SCU program. (See “Components Menu” in Chapter 5 for information.) 2. Make sure the computer is not turned on. 3. Plug the device cable to the serial port on the rear of the computer. 4. Turn on the computer. NOTE: Portable modems that derive power through the serial port cannot be used with the computer. Instead, use a modem that is powered by its own internal battery or external AC power. Expanding Your Computer4-5 Connecting an IR Device Your computer has an IR (infrared) port for connecting an infrared- equipped device wirelessly such as another computer, printer, or PDA (Personal Digital Assistant). Follow this procedure to connect an IR device: 1. Under Windows, make sure that the IrDA Fast Infrared Port is set to HP HSDL-2300/3600. (See “How to Use the Driver CD” in Chapter 6 for information.) 2. Make sure that the “COM Ports” and its “Mode Setting For COM2” items are set properly in the SCU program. (See “Components Menu” in Chapter 5 for information.) 3. When using the IR port: Place the transmitting device where its IR port faces the IR port of your computer within the effective range − within ±20-degrees vertical angle and within ±20-degrees horizontal angle at no greater than 0.8~1.0 meter distance. Place the receiving device where the IR port of your computer faces its IR port within the effective range − within ±15-degrees vertical angle and within ±15-degrees horizontal angle at no greater than 0.8~1.0 meter distance. 4. To take advantage of the IR communications, you need a third party software. NOTES: During infrared communication, take note of the following: l Do not move the computer and IR device. l Do not enter Standby mode. l Do not use a cell phone or another IR device near the computer. l Avoid strong light such as sunlight or fluorescent light. l Disable the screen saver. 4-6Expanding Your Computer Expanding Your Computer4-7 Connecting a Bluetooth-compliant Device (option) NOTE: To take advantage of the Bluetooth feature, the Bluetooth driver supplied with your computer must be installed (see chapter 6 for details). Your computer has a Bluetooth port for connecting a Bluetooth- compliant device wirelessly. Bluetooth is a short-range wireless communications technology. Devices with Bluetooth capabilities can exchange information over a distance of about 10 meters (30 feet) without requiring a physical connection. Unlike infrared, you do not need to line up the devices to beam information with Bluetooth. The devices only need to be within a range of about 10 meters. You can even beam information to a device in a different room, as long as it is within range. You may use Bluetooth in the following ways: • Beam Information – such as files, appointments, tasks, and contact cards, between devices that have Bluetooth capabilities. For example, if you and a co-worker each have a device with Bluetooth, you can beam items between your devices, such as files, contact cards, appointments, tasks, and so forth. • Create a dial-up modem connection – between your device and a Bluetooth phone. You can then use the Bluetooth phone as a modem. Bluetooth operates in three different modes: • On – the Bluetooth radio is turned on and you can use Bluetooth features. • Off – the Bluetooth radio is tu…

BluetoothAllows you to use the bluetooth port to connect to bluetooth-compliant devices. Touchscreen Driver To install the touch screen driver, perform the following: 1. Insert the driver CD into the drive. 2. Click on “Windows 2K”, then “Touchscreen” and follow the onscreen instructions to continue. 3. When finished installing, select “Yes” to reboot your system. The driver should now be loaded. 4. After the system has finished rebooting, click on the “PenMount Monitor” icon located on the taskbar to bring up the “PenMount Control Panel”. 5. Select the “Standard Calibration” folder and click on “OK.” 6. Click on “Advanced Calibration” button. 7. Click on the four sides (points) and the plus-sign “+” on the screen to calibrate your touchscreen for use on the computer. Installing Software Drivers6-7 Installing Drivers for Windows XP To set up the necessary drivers for Windows XP, click on “Windows XP” on the initial screen. Install this main chipset driver before installing the device drivers. 6-8Installing Software Drivers VGAAllows you to select high-resolution displays with richer colors. It can drive LCD displays as well as CRT displays. AudioAllows you to take full advantage of the audio subsystem. USB 2.0Allows your system to connect to USB 2.0 devices. Gary Moy Re: FCC ID ABZ89FT7604 / ABZ89FT7605 / ABZ89FT7606 Response to Audit Question 1: FCC ID label exhibit is wrong in Exhibit Types; Test Reports, ID Label, External Photos – Please Advise. Response: The issue was having both FCC ID and DOC on the labels. Motorola was informed that you can have one or the other, but not both on the same label. We have since made the corrections to the label by removing the DOC logo and keeping the FCC ID. Since labels have been pre-made, we will institute the running change once our current label stock is depleted. Question 2: Please submit antenna photo’s and location information. Response: Attachment of photo’s are enclosed. Question 4: Present FCC ID label refers to ABZ89FT7602. That ID is for one LAN and one Bluetooth in a laptop, with the LAN antenna in the handle. Does present filing use LAN antenna in the handle? Response: The LAN antenna is not in the handle. It is located on the top lid of the laptop. The manual has been updated to reflect this. Question 5: User manual page 2-23 discusses replacing the wireless LAN. How is compliance with 15.203 and 15.204 accomplished such that unauthorized LAN cards are not installed by the end-user? Response: Motorola’s intention was to certify multiple LAN cards as part of the release of the notebook computer. However, to this date, only one has been certified for use in the ML900. The plan is still to certify others, just not at this point. We’ve updated our manual to reflect this information, to only state that only one LAN card is certified. As for end-user replacement of the card, the card is not of the vintage PCMCIA type. It is a board that is attached to the main system board inside the computer. In order for it to be replaced by the end user, it would be near impossible. It requires taking apart the notebook computer to get to the main board. Question 6: User manual page 1-7 shows “Bluetooth port” – please describe. Is this a plug-in, internally installed, or what? Response: The Bluetooth Port is internally installed located in the left side of the notebook computer.
