Sunrise Blvd., Plantation, FL 33322, USA WWW.MOT.COM/iDEN Page: 4- 2 4.1.Carrier Frequency Generation and Stabilization As shown in Figure 4-1 the synthesizer (U301) reference oscillator employs a crystal controlled Colpitts oscillator running at a frequency of 16.8Mhz. The oscillator transistor, start- up circuit, and temperature compensation circuit are located in the IC (U301) while the oscillator feedback capacitors, crystal, and tuning varactor are external. This oscillator is temperature compensated to an accuracy of +/-2.5PPM from –20 o C to 60 o C. The method of temperature compensation is to apply an inverse Bechmann voltage curve, which matches the crystal's Bechmann curve to a varactor that constantly shifts the oscillator back on frequency. The signal from this reference oscillator is routed to the synthesizer (U301) and used to control the stability of the main Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) which oscillates at a frequency between 956.9 and 975.9 MHz (see figure 4-2). The synthesizer also buffers the 16.8 MHz signal and provides it to U401, U601 and U501. The PLL inside the U601 uses the 16.8 MHz clock to be used as the reference for the TX offset and RX 2nd VCO. The frequency of the TX offset VCO is 301.8 MHz which is divided by two in U501 and mixed with the main VCO to generate the transmit frequency. The frequency of the RX 2nd VCO is 219.3 MHz which is divided by two in the U601 and mixed with the Intermediate Frequency (IF) to generate the baseband data for the DSP. The frequency control for each VCO is accomplished by a PLL that compares the VCO frequency to the reference frequency thus locking each VCO to the reference oscillator. The transmitter frequency is programmed to a single frequency between 806 - 825 MHz composed by subtracting half of the TX offset VCO frequency (301.8 MHz) from the main VCO transmit frequency range of 956.9 - 975.9 MHz. In voice mode, the radio will function in Quad-16QAM mode only. In data mode, the radio will use any one of the three different modulation techniques (Quad-16QAM, Quad-64QAM, and Quad-QPSK) in a given time division multiplexed slot. The following describes each of the modulation techniques. The modulation technique termed Quad-QPSK is a linear digital modulation of a multi- channel variant of a 4-state Quadrature Amplitude Modulation. Data bits to be transmitted are split into four parallel lower rate streams, each of which is QPSK modulated to its own sub carrier frequency at a rate of 4k symbols per second. The four resulting sub channel signals are then combined in frequency division multiplex fashion to produce the composite M-QPSK signal. This spectrally efficient linear modulation can achieve transmission at 32K bits per second in a 25 kHz channel. The transmitter is configured using TDMA time slotting so that up to 6 radio users can simultaneously share the 25 kHz channel. The modulation technique termed Quad-16QAM is a linear digital modulation of a multi- channel variant of a 16-state Quadrature Amplitude Modulation. Data bits to be transmitted are split into four parallel lower rate streams, each of which is 16QAM modulated to its own sub carrier frequency at a rate of 4k symbols per second. The four resulting sub channel signals are then combined in frequency division multiplex fashion to produce the composite M-16QAM signal. This spectrally efficient linear modulation can achieve transmission at 64K bits per second in a 25 kHz channel. The transmitter is configured using TDMA time slotting so that up to 6 radio users can simultaneously share the 25 kHz channel. This variable power (0.2 milliWatt- 1.47 Watt ERP) transmitter is part of a handheld transceiver used in a SMR and EA SMR trunking system operating in the United States 806-821/851-866 MHz frequency band. This transceiver is of the receive-first type described in International Telecommunications Union Recommendation ITU-R M.1221 entitled Technical And Operational Requirements For Cellular Multimode Mobile Radio Stations. It must first find, acquire and lock onto a control channel from a predefined set of control channel frequencies assigned to a companion Authorized base station (e.g. – FCC ID: ABZ89FC5792). Transmission is not possible until lock to a base station control channel has been achieved, then transmission is limited to digitally modulated service request bursts on the reverse control channel. Upon recognition of a proper request, the control channel base station transmitter will then assign the transceiver a traffic channel for transmission of digital voice or circuit-switched data from the set of frequencies for which the trunking system is licensed. Attached Exhibit 12.1 provides additional descriptive details. It is expected that this handheld time division multiplexed transceiver marketed in the United States will also be used for itinerant operation with companion Authorized Base Stations by users requesting trunked radio and telephone interconnect service while roaming outside the United States. In some countries the companion base stations are licensed to operate at frequencies in the 821-825/866-870 MHz band in addition to some of those in the 806-821/851-856 MHz band normally used in United States SMR systems. Consequently, this transmitter has been designed to meet FCC requirements for operation in the 806-821 MHz band over the more global band of 806 - 825 MHz when used with a companion Authorized Base Station. Thus, performance data is provided to substantiate FCC compliant operation with a Companion Base Station over the broader 806 to 825 MHz band expected for global use of this handheld transceiver. To facilitate global roaming it is kindly requested that a note be provided in the Grant for Equipment Authorization which states that this ‘receive first’ type of equipment is compliant for transmitter operation over the broader range 806-825 MHz when used with a compatible Authorized Base Station. Transmitter Description ----- 47 CFR 2.1033 (c) 4,5,6,7,8 12.1 Transmitter Technical Characteristics This handheld trunked radio transceiver is of the receive first type, meaning it must first find, acquire and lock onto a control channel from a predefined set of control channel frequencies assigned to a compatible base station. Transmission is not possible until acquisition and lock has been achieved, then it is limited to transmission of service request bursts on the digitally modulated reverse control channel. Upon recognition of a proper request, the control channel base station transmitter will then assign the transceiver a traffic channel for transmission of digital voice, circuit-switched data, or packet-switched data from the set of frequencies for which the trunking system is licensed. The technical capability of the transceiver exceeds FCC emissions requirements for the 806 - 825 MHz range for which companion base stations are authorized in the United States as it is expected that this handheld transceiver marketed in the United States will also be used for itinerant roaming operation outside the United States with companion base stations that may operate anywhere within the broader frequency range 806 - 825 MHz. It is also expected that this transceiver type will be marketed outside the United States and brought into the United States for itinerant “roaming” operation on compatible 806 - 825 MHz base stations located in the United States. Thus performance data is provided to substantiate FCC compliant operation with a companion base station over the broader international 806 to 825 MHz band expected in use of this handheld transceiver outside the United States. In addition to controlling the assigned frequency to which the transceiver will be slaved, the compatible base station frequency serves as an accurate, stable reference for the transceiver local reference oscillator by virtue of a transceiver AFC function inherent in the acquisition and lock process. The trunking system protocol uses a 90ms frame divided into six 15ms time slots. The base station allocates the number of 15ms time division multiplex (TDM) time slots in which the transceiver transmits, depending on the user requested transmission mode. The RF output power of the transmitter is automatically adjusted in discrete steps over the range from rated power to approximately 34 dB cutback in response to changes in received signal strength. Additionally, the maximum output power level of different models of this radio type is factory programmed to nominally be either 1.1 Watt or 0.6 watts pulse average. No 1.1 Watt radio models will operate with the current limited Factory Mutual approved battery listed in section 12.2.
